We dive into the TR Vault to bring you a classic interview of #marvinhagler. This was leading into his superfight with #sugarrayleonard back in 1987. #boxing
Next Up for Top Rank Boxing, WBC/WBO/IBF light heavyweight king Artur Beterbiev now has a date to defend his crown. After recent dental surgery forced Beterbiev to postpone his Aug. 19 title defense against former world champion Callum Smith, the two will now meet Saturday, Jan. 13 at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada.
Beterbiev vs Smith and the co-feature will be televised live on ESPN. Undercard action will stream exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+.

This man has been my hero for my whole life and that will never change. To me he's the best boxer I ever saw but perhaps more than that I look up to him as a man because of his principles and work ethic. A true legend if there ever was one and he sure was Marvelous.

@@SPIDERM0OSE It's amazing that it's over looked as it's like a middleweight version of Manila, as there's back & forth through the hole fight & near every shot is a power punch. A truly great fight to watch, to me one of Haglers best fights.
@SPIDERM0OSE

@@CC-ff7ft Arguably his very best. He was just past his prime & Mugabi was an unbeaten terrifying KO machine. Mugabi took a lotta breaking but Hagler did what Hagler done, he BROKE him. We seen his heart in soul in that fight, I dont think anyone hurt Hagler as much & as often as Mugabi did. If Mugabi hada won that fight his career woulda been legendary but because Hagler broke him people ignore just how mush it took to break him, the quality of fighter in Hagler that it took to beat him & just how impressive he was until Hagler beat him, at that time no other fighter from 154 - 175 coulda beat Mugabi, he was THE BEAST but Hagler was a MONSTER.
@CC-ff7ft
@CC-ff7ft 4 ай бұрын
@@SPIDERM0OSE And I don't think Mugabi was ever the same fighter after it. The only other fighter I remember given Hagler a hand full while champion was Roldan until it got stopped on cuts, a tough fight for Hagler . But yea Mugabi a 27 fights 27 K.Os at 26 years old vs Hagler near 33 made it the fight it was & Hagler had some balls to fight him at that stage, a true warrior champion.
@SPIDERM0OSE
@SPIDERM0OSE 4 ай бұрын
@@CC-ff7ft Thats what Im saying, Hagler BROKE him. I dont think you quite get what that means & as such I dont think you quite get just how damaging a fight with Hagler was for a career. NOBODY except Duran, Leonard, Hearns & maybe Obel weren't absolutely broken by him, NOBODY went on to better things after fighting Hagler except maybe Leonard & Hearns who won the LHW titles from reigning champs. You had to be an ALL TIME GREAT just to survive an encounter with him. Hagler broke potentially great fighters & Mugabi is the prime example. That fight was do or die, more so than the Hearns fight, the Mugabi team specialised in getting a fighter at the right time, they had an upset win over Duran with Kirkland Lang & they famously dethroned Donald Curry in a huge upset when he was considered the p4p #1. They smelled blood in the water & were 100% convinced they had Haglers number. Only one man was making it to the final bell & Hagler had to dig deeper than he ever had to in his entire career to get it done, it was a fantastic performance by him on almost every level, Mugabi was a hell of an opponent that night & dont forget his amateur pedigree, he medaled at the Olympics & boxed in the final, he was a top TOP class prospect & could easily have became the face of boxing if he hada beat Hagler. Big Obel won a world title after fighting him & was was a KO monster before fighting Hagler too, like Mugabi but unlike Mugabi his fighting spirit wasn't smashed to smithereens by Hagler. Hamsho, Sibson & Antufermo were capable of holding the title n defending it, all 3 of them had their careers stopped in their tracks by Hagler, he took them to another level n what they seen about him & about themselves in those dark waters left them permanently changed as fighters. Hagler was a MONSTER. He was unbreakable, He beat every opponent he met apart from Leonard. Make no mistake about it, Hagler had no fear, not of Hearns, Mugabi, Leonard or anyone else, he was the real deal, tough as hell & as stubborn as a mule. All the 4 Kings were cut from that cloth, they feared no one & they hunted down the biggest fights, Leonard especially, they all made big fights without him but when he was on the scene the whole sport sizzled.

A bit of comedy from people who were around in these days…. 4:09 …. ‘WHEN I TURNED 32…. Oh I mean 30’ … Marvin’s real age was always under suspicion as he moved it back two years in 1982… All I know is Marvin was extremely busy between 13-15 … Had a kid, dropped out of school and worked in a factory BEFORE arriving in Brockton. Anyway, I thank Top Rank for putting more of his interview with Tim Ryan out for all his fans. Still can’t believe MMH is gone. Marvelous Marvin Hagler will always be my favourite fighter.

Hagler was the fighter of the 80s he fought 14times? Against the best competition i heard it said Leonard was a blown up welter as was Hearns, Duran et al ok Leonard fought only once more at 154ib in 91 against Norris n was given the treatment he deserved, otherwise it was 164 Hearns 2, 168 lalonde, 168 Duran 3, camacho 160. He was 30yrs old when he challenged Hagler, at his physical peak, hadnt taken severe punishment in any of his fights, only Duran in the 1st fight gave him a physical fight, that was 7yrs previous, he freely admitted he chose to fight marvin when his boxing skills were diminished he knew exactly what he wanted to do, wait til marv gets old n then challenge him, thankfully at least Marvin Took home $19mil n Leonard $11mil. Enough for marv to sail off to italy with a big fat cheque to go make some movies n relax in comfort, knowing that he was the greatest middleweight since sugar ray Robinson not discounting carlos monzon but i'd of taken Marvin to beat the great Argentine at his best. Yes leonard fight wasnt the one he wanted to finish on, but at least he never got ass whipped n dropped then finally stopped like ray leonard. A guy who was lucky to get a draw with Hearns..R.i.p Marvelous Marvin Hagler-The complete fighter.

Leonard, like Floyd and Klanelo, waited on their toughest opponent(s) to go through wars and to make sure their opponents deteriorated some before they stepped into the ring with them. Also, to make sure they have the public brainwashed up so much in their favor, that it's be impossible or very unlikely they would lose. Each fighter has this: Leonard - Hagler, Mayweather - Pacquiao, and now Klanelo - Benavidez. This is part of their script to achieving legacy or a padded record.
