Ok see now a days nobody thinks that about anime. The only anime aimed at children are Kodomo-muke (means “For Children”) This is the confirmed demographic of anime and manga: Kodomo-muke (for children) Shojo (for teen girls) Shonen (for teen boys) Josei (for adult women) Seinen (for adult men) Hentai (anime porn) Now before ya’ll start to try and disagree about Shonen, the word Shonen does mean “boy” and in a broader sense it can mean boys of all ages. But when it comes to Shonen being used in context of manga or anime, it mainly refers to it’s narrow sense. In the narrow sense, it refers only to boys of the age equivalent to junior high school students to high school students. And in Japan, junior high school students are 12-15 years of age. High school students are 15-18 years of age. So Shonen’s main demographic of manga and anime are early to late teenage boys. Just in case you still don’t agree, I will post links to various sources confirming that. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shōnen_manga en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shōnen_Jump%2B tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ShonenDemographic www.animenewsnetwork.com/interview/2019-02-11/weekly-shonen-jump-editor-in-chief-hiroyuki-nakano/.143096 manga.fandom.com/wiki/Shōnen_manga wiki.kidzsearch.com/wiki/Weekly_Shōnen_Jump bakuman.fandom.com/wiki/Weekly_Shōnen_Jump www.hxchector.com/anime-and-manga-types/

Anime was all kinda cool and violent (except actual kids shows like pokemon and stuff of course), and I never thought about it til now but yeh, for a good 15 years or so, most of its really tame now. the devilman crybaby series on netflix was great and hand drawn like the good old days but one can argue its an 8/90s anime still which is why it was still in those tones.

Although the reality is us 80s kids were actually watching anime long before and just didn't realize it. Saint Seiya was an anime that caused a huge impact here in Mexico (as well as some countries of Europe and Latin America) due to its violence and mature subjects. It was released uncensored in public tv during a time where the highest level of violence you could watch on a “cartoon” was Donatello throwing a Foot Soldier into a trash can (back then people didn’t even know the concept of “anime”, it was just a “cartoon with Japanese writing”. I remember it was in national news when the first episode aired and within the first 4 minutes there was a scene of the hero chopping the ear off his enemy. Despite the initial controversy Saint Seiya became a huge success, the most popular anime in these countries until Dragon Ball was aired in the late 90’s. Too bad the US missed Saint Seiya due to the terrible dub and the censorship

In the 80s, we had pg 13 movies, which had melting Nazis, exploding heads, automatic weapons, and a fun near incest, near rape scene in an otherwise fun time travel romp. In the 90s censorship craze, anime was the only place to find adult themes.

I'm trying not to be rude, like legitimately praying for strength, but God help me if you keep on insulting the animation of these movies and shows by referring to them as lesser than today's.

Alot of these used to play on Saturdays on sci-fi channels back in the day.

Plus a lot of those official anime studios also crank out serious animeporn often using a lot of legitimate anime voice actors , , , , "LA Blue Girl" series from late 1990's fits this description , , , ,👍👽

Heh, most anything by Go Nagai is not even remotely kid friendly, and bless him for it! But if you want to watch "Devilman: The Birth" and its followup, seek out the subbed version, because the dub is positively wretched. Ditto for "Vampire Hunter D". Well, OK, until really recently, as in the last 8 or 10 years or so (if that), it was a given that anime dubs generally suffered from awful voice acting and less than accurate translations most of the time. This is making me want to seek out most all of these series/movies now, since I remember them all well. I'm surprised that "Hokuto no Ken" ("Fist of the Northstar") didn't make it onto this list at all, however, because it's pretty intensely violent and bloody.

You are right. Fist of the North Star is definitely a classic and deserved to be on here. A great list. Shows how much greatness was in this era that I forgot about that one.

And then there's Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko which is probably the most adult Anime I've ever watched despite having zero violence and virtually no plot.

Robot Carnival is one of the best things ever...I remember watching this on cable the early 90's. Kind of a golden age of TV for me. The steampunk Giant Robots are EPIC.

I watched most of these titles in the mid 90s on Network One(N1),Sci-fi Channel, and through video rental. The adult scenes were censored on tv by pixelation but I knew what was going on. This was back before anime became mainstream and all the disrespect of classic anime came to be. Good times

I keep hearing him say the anime is not that great, but considering that it is all hand drawn and so detailed it is incredibly good even by today's standards.

Loved the 80's for animation. The pinnacle was Akira. Cant watch the dumbed version.

They don't make good anime like that, these days. Rare at best.

Awesome picks! Surprisingly I have watched or am at least with most of these. I do want to note that you mention animation standards not comparing to today's standards and, sure, that is fair. Most anime today is computer assisted though and the labor that went into the classics shows.. and I think it helps carry the grittier stories better. Also, the same could be said for Akira. Love the story and overall art style but the faces always threw me off. It would seem the artist struggled drawing faces or had a very strange signature when it came to faces.. Still kind of bugs me but I can appreciate the uniqueness of it. Anyone else feel this way?? I feel we are more apologetic for Akira due to its influence on the art and genre alike.
