I found genocyber on VHS in the sale bin at Blockbuster in junior high in the early 2000s and knew nothing about it. My mom let me have it after seeing that its marked "suitable for most audiences". My traumatized 12-year-old self cried herself to sleep that night.

No way it'd look like this though. Anime has become so cheap and digital these days. These were all hand drawn cell animated productions. Closest to this old school style would probably be Attack on Titan. That series actually did death and gore pretty good for a modern anime.

Instead of gatekeeping and making fun of the "new weebs" try to share these gems with the younger generation 🤷‍♂️ but without shitting on them , be friendly and don't bring an elitist I'm older I've seen it all attitude to the table and you might get a shit ton of new watchers into all these masterpieces and have new insights to talk about these stories with
@Shadow_Sonata
@Shadow_Sonata Жыл бұрын
@@andrew-rn9ui There is a reason for gatekeeping fandoms. Whenever the "wider audience" is brought in, it first starts with the 'normies' who want everything simplified and dumbed down to their level (two dimensional characters, simple storylines, the same tropes repeated over and over). After that, the 'activists' follow. The terminally online and perpetually offended who want every thing censored down to toddler friendly levels and made a platform for their agendas. Afterwards, they move on to the next victim. Too many fandoms, franchises and genres have fallen to the influx of 'new fans" who ended up turning them into toxic social and political waste dumps. Asking a few questions or looking into social media posts for things like "current thing" and political emojis , buzzwords or tags can tell the difference between someone who would be a true fan and enjoy something they might never have discovered on their own, or a parasite that will destroy what you love and seek out the next host.

The video Narrator failed to mention that Violence Jack IS THE SEQUEL to DevilMan, as Violence Jack is the Reincarnation of Akira Fudo. SPOILER ALERT: The ending of DevilMan (No matter the version cause they all end the same way) causes the birth of Violence Jack's world with Akira waking up as Jack with amnesia. Both DevilMan and Violence Jack were created by Go Nagai, The creator of the GrandFather of all Mecha, Mazinger Z, Then Great Mazinger, Koutetsu Jeeg, GaiKing, Grandeiser and Cutey Honey (Honey Flash) among other titles and stories. As for BAOH, there is an actual Manga from the 80s and 90s that goes deeper into the characters and their thoughts and emotions. Indeed the Manga is as harsh as the Anime with the deaths of background characters to the point that a mother and her child are offed by a big Mutant Mandrill enemy that is hunting BAOH and the girl. The mother and child were simple bystanders, and the monster threatened Ikuro into fighting going with him, by killing the pair, which of course prompted a fight. Never read the rest of the story as it was many issues but the gist was similar as to the Chronos corporation in the Guyver Manga with the company that created BAOH, with many mutants and enemies hunting Ikuro and the girl and even attacking them in public places during the daylight, with people as victims.

The Anime is a heavily condensed story and it after finishing the Manga now I understand why there is barely any emotional expressions on the Anime and it is indeed because they tried to cram all 10 chapters into it, leaving a whole lot of characters and story out. It was a serialized Manga that started in 1984...similar to Guyver too in that sense, only that BAOH ended and Guyver is still running. Hope Guyver ends soon to avoid a BERSERK fiasco LOL 🤣

Ain’t that right, chiphead?” One of the best deliveries that really encapsulates the dystopian gang violence themes so prevalent in media from the late 70’s to mid 90’s. It’s not a masterpiece of the Akira calibre, but still very cool.

Hand--drawn ultra--violent anime of the 80s and 90s you just don't see anymore. I can still recall seeing Urotsuki Doji on VHS in '93: it was intense big time, the transformation, tentacle rape, and fight scenes. It left me shaken. Brutal stuff indeed, some of which I used to rent from my local video store and grew up with back then. I think some of the directors were trying to convey the idea about what makes a character violent, and to make the viewers think. 😱🙀🙀🤞🤞

It's a bit of an interesting fact that these are under the influence of the American splatter movies of the 80's Japanese rental video market. A young Japanese artist saw them at the time and thought, "If it's a video, it's okay to depict things like this without being restricted by broadcasting." And they created this kind of animation as an animation project for video distribution and age-restricted movies, not for TV broadcasting. It is very strange that they were imported to the United States in the form of underground distribution and shocked young people as a work that broke the "animation restrictions" of America (or Western Europe).

These types shows conveyed what violence truly is capable of , nowadays a lot of animes use violence as their main premise , but they dont really do a good job of portraying what it causes to their victims , wether they are innocent or guilty, people just like to see a person grab a sword or a gun and annihilate everyone in a room in less than a second while laughing manically or just acting apatethic and stoic while he/she does it, as if the act of butchering people is something awesome or cool , and THEN once they are done they never show you the consequences ,usually you see a white background with a black silhouette of the guy being split in half or being decapitated, but on these shows they show you ABSOLUBTELY EVERYTHING, with exquisite and grotesque detail , and let me ask you , is it pretty?, is it cool and fun? , hell no , of course it isnt , (well for me at least), and i think thats exactly the point, to show that violence isnt something to be taken lightly and that if you are willing to employ it be ready to dirty your hands.

And as a teenager in the 90s I had nearly all of these on VHS, and they cost no small amount of money either. I don't know why, but edgy old school animation like that has a special place in my heart. I generally absolutely adore the retro aspect of popculture and i think it should make a comeback. (FC3 Blood Dragon was awesome, for example) Another great example would be the hotline miami series. They just perfectly encaptured the substance of productions like these here. Just beautiful. Also reminds me of how incredibly happy i was, when i got myself Duke Nukem 3D about a month ago and was just absolutely in awe, about every little detail of the first level. ...Especially since this game was so ahead of it's time. Even compared to games like COD nowadays. It's just something that gives you the impression, it has a soul. ...Maybe that's why i like these hand drawn animations so much. They just appear so much more personal, which is something that modern hi-fi productions rarely come across as. Like... When i've rewatced the first couple episodes of spongebob season one, i came to notice and appreciate all of these beautiful details, like subtle dark humor, a little quote or joke in the newspapers someone's reading, the fact that many plot points and characters probably have been inspired by real life examples and experiences and all the amazing jokes that someone visibly put energy in, in order to make them as good as possible. (Especially considering that a couple seconds to boost that joke with a fitting animation, that only goes for a couple seconds or less, probably took many hours to make. It is effort for sure, but it doesn't remain unnoticed.) It is a red line of quality and it makes the big differences by small things done right.

This is the anime i grew up on! In the very early 90's in Australia there was two companies that made it their mission to have a solid section in most video shops in the country, Kiseki and Manga. We got a majority of the anime on this list, it was such a thrill to see these back then as we only had 5 channels on free to air tv which were all very bland. I cant watch modern anime these days unless its about adults with the exception of a few like Full Metal Alchemist as im in my 40s now, occasionally ill find one like Monster that i like, i still love the whole aesthetic of anime though. In every city in our country there would be an anime shop which rented out bootlegs of the American titles from companies like US Manga Corps, Pioneer etc so i would dubb them via the old 2 VCR trick! Thats where i found anime like Record of Loddoss War, Video Girl AI and DNA2, they had a lot of H titles too. The one i used to go to all the time was called A-Zone is Brisbanes Fortitude Valley, it was there as early as i remember around 94 and was there until i think around 2012!

Angel Cop: I LOVE this OVA, it's one of my all-time favourites. Fun fact: Manga edited the UK release so that one particularly gruesome death in the first episode and a rapey scene in the fourth are removed. Also, the dub criticism isn't regarding translation quality but the sheer amount of swearing, which is just utterly hilarious, I find! Wicked City: I only watched this one for the first time a few years ago. If I had seen this when I was younger, I might have a greater appreciation for it now. But as it stands, I'm not that keen on the story and that pervy old man is just annoying and cringey. Demon City Shinjuku: Even though this is regarded as the worse between it and Wicked City, I actually prefer this one. Probably because I saw it long before I saw Wicked. Golgo 13: You got the synopsis wrong, Golgo is actually being hunted by the oil tycoon as revenge for killing his son. But other than that, great description, and it's a bloody good film overall. GenoCyber: "Not for the weak of heart" is the understatement of the year. The level of detail they put into the violence and body horror is truly sickening. Don't get me wrong, I like this series (except for the last two episodes) but it is batshit insane and quite possibly the most gruesome anime ever made. Devilman: *WHY GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!???!!* This has one of the funniest English dubs I've ever heard! XD Violence Jack: Another contender for the most hilarious English dub, with all the over-the-top excessive swearing that entails. Urotsukidoji: Okay, allow me to amend my GenoCyber comment. It's the most gruesome anime ever... that I actually enjoy watching. I cannot say I enjoyed the two Overfiend films I've seen, primarily due to the awful, AWFUL soundtrack and dubbing, but many of the violent+sexual scenes left a bad taste in my mouth. Akira: Like you said, this movie's story is convoluted and I had a difficult time following it, so despite being labelled as a classic, I really didn't like it. :(

Pretty much everything in this video has been among my favorite anime since the 90s. This is the kind of stuff that introduced me to anime back then and set the standards for what anime should be, which is probably why it's been so hard for me to get into most modern anime because it's so removed from this gritty yet beautifully hand-rendered style and dark, atmospheric themes. Hell, I even did a cosplay of Golgo 13 at the last anime con I went to, and I was happily surprised by how many people recognized it. There's a few others that you missed that are probably worth mentioning here. My recommendations are Curse of the Yoma, Midori, Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Saga OVAs, Kimera, and The Curse of Kazuo Umezu. And while not exactly violent, I think that Angel's Egg, Neo Tokyo, and Robot Carnival are worthy adjacent titles in terms of their art and style.

Genocyber was intense. I remember destroying the VHS after watching it. Took me a long time to get over it, way too much for a young teen 😅

these were the kinds of anime they would put on TV here in the UK on Channel 4 at like 1am back in the 90's. as a tween back that used to draw, i loved it because i would get so much inspiration to draw cool gory pictures for my friends. a lot of artists goes through a gore phase i think. or even just dark phases in general not necessarily gore. but yeah. these were a big part of my formative years, and i miss them a lot. especially the eng dubs that would have them swear constantly for no reason. lol. it was fvcking great when your a kid thats not really meant to see this stuff

I still have the VHS of Vampire Hunter D. I saw it so many times. This and Fist of the North Star, Legend of the Overfiend (sadly I lost the tape) and the sequel which wasn't as good, and Ninja Scroll were my go to movies to watch over and over (and of course Akira which I recorded from the TV). It was a great time when you could buy these tapes in HMV, Virgin Records etc. Many would not be sold today.
