It's strange to see that by the end of the Paramount/Famous era in 1967, Bakshi really got the cartoons up to the times. Nice graphics in the dream sequence, too! Plus, there are flowers on the Paramount mountain!!

This is possibly my favorite 1960s theatrical cartoon of all. I'll have to re-watch all the others (WB, MGM, Universal, Disney, etc) first to make a fair judgement. But either way, I relate a lot to Marvin and his friends. They don't follow the crowd, they just want to spread beauty, peace, and love. I should consider starting a flower garden on the balcony (I live in an apartment) so that I can hand out flowers to random people (at least the ones who look sad anyway). I also wish it was possible to paint buildings like they did to make them look nicer. I'm tired of seeing neutral-colored walls out there.

In one morning I've discovered Dayton Allen's early TV comedy work, his work on DEPUTY DAWG and now Ralph Bakshi in a psychedelic cartoon. Ain't KZbin great?

Ralph Bakshi only did 4 shorts at Paramount. (most likely the last 4) This was the only one that was not part of the Fractured Fables shorts.

The thing was that it was Paramount's then owner Gulf Western that made the decision to closed down the animation studio. After Ralph Bakshi was hired.

It has a Fritz the Cat feel, except child-friendly, in a way, because that was the rules of Hollywood just before the death of the Production Code and the birth of the ratings system. The things that made Bakshi's early-to-mid '70s stuff unique: sex, cursing... Bakshi wanted to use those stuff in this. No, SERIOUSLY. But Paramount REFUSED. Oh, he was so pissed that he must have HATED the executives for that! And he disowned this. But it wouldn't matter anyway because Paramount Cartoons was on it's deathbed, and by December, just like that, poof, it was gone.

Similarly in the 90s, Bakshi did a pair of What A Cartoon shorts for Cartoon Network with Malcom and Melvin, and likewise, the shorts were heavily edited before CN would air them (and believe me, even their edited versions were really weird), and he was pissed about it that he disowned those shorts as well. He's easily one of the most eccentric animators in the business, lol.

at least i'm not a fan of Bakshi's work,through not all of them,most of his films may have been culturally accurate and became cult favorites,but I'm not a fan of Baskhi's animated feature films(except for Wizards and Lord of the Rings),because most of his films just have dark and underground stuff such as sex,vulgar language,nudity,and graphic violence. at least,Ralph did manage to get away at once after Coonskin caused a huge controversy upon it's release and went to more family-friendly and fantasy mode with Wizards and The Lord of The Rings,but reverted to his old ways after LotR was released to mixed reviews. Ralph needs to do a comeback after Last Days on Coney Island was released in 2015,he'll do a 2D animated film for both kids and adults to enjoy,because 2D Animated Movies need to become prominent again in the upcoming 2020's or make a animated series on Netflix or Amazon.

@Verna D'Alto It was just the way things were back then. Most Paramount cartoons never credited beyond a set number of names and positions in these films (voice actors for instance were never credited outside the one or two times someone was given a credit for "narration"). One credit that was never seen before or since in these I noticed was for "Assistant Animation", these people would never have gotten a credit at all if it wasn't for Ralph or whoever felt they should for this one time.

I love Ralph Bakshi's science-fiction movie "Wizards". It's similair to the 1968 science-fiction movie "Planet of the Apes" combined with "The Omega Man" and "Star Wars".

I just posted a comment that this film was sung by Verna Schneider now dalto. this was sung by me and Gary lantz. we received no credit on this film. the group i was in the life cycle. received credit. but no credit for my voice or Gary's. the list of vocals was incorrect. no one even knows that I sang this for many hours and didn't get credit for this time. I want to know why other singers were given credit when they were not part of the recording session.

Theory: when Marvin's mom said she was going to be at the beauty parlor all day she meant working there rather than as a customer. Thought of it because she seemed to be more accepting of Marvin's ways, hinting at her being ore open-minded. Maybe she was even a rebel when she was a kid, since her working rather than being a stay-at-home mom was rebellious for the time era.

Did Bakshi technically kill the Paramount cartoon division since he was the last guy at the head of the board?

No. It was the new owners of Paramount at the time, Gulf-Western who gave the order. They decided to do it in November 1967. I'll tell you this: During that time, while Bakshi was finishing the four cartoons, after completing a cartoon Culhane started in that time, The Opera Caper, he had hired comic book and pulp fiction writers and artists Gray Morrow, Archie Goodwin, Wally Wood, Jim Steranko, Harvey Kurtzman and Lin Carter to work in the studio. (even today, having comic book writers to write films is an honor of sorts... as long as they write screenplays. Look at Ed Brubaker's work on the Westworld TV series in recent years.) He was planning some killer ideas such as a sort-of animated Laugh-in, entitled The Pow! Show and tried an animation experiment with radio's The Bickersons, in what Chuck Jones disgustedly called, "illustrated radio." One sad detail of those last days is that one day, a girl in the ink-and-paint department got a call and cried her eyes out when he received some bad news: her fiancee, a soldier in Vietnam, has been killed. Harsh, right? December 5th, 1967, was the day the cartoon division shut down, in my honest opinion, as it was but a dark and tragic Tuesday. And some didn't go the next day, the 6th, a Wednesday, to pick up some stuff they forgot when it shut down. But because of the changing times, the executives knew it would be a moot point now. And he was reportedly so upset when Burton Hampft, one of the execs at the time, gave him the bad news, that he shredded his contract. Yet, he left to do Rocket Robin Hood in Canada in the place of Shamus Culhane, the penultimate head of Paramount Cartoons. He later relocated his studio to New York, yet it was only the beginning of something new. Therefore, it wasn't Bakshi's fault at all. It was the executives' fault. You wondering how I know about it? I read up on it!
