Marvin's brother served in Nam. When he want to release it, Berry Gordy objected & didn't want an anti protest song, but Marvin convinced him.

You've been on a roll the last few days! Another great song by an artist who passed way too early. We need protest songs like this today. Something to rally the young around a good cause. Today social media has us split 50 different ways.

Interesting nugget…the gentlemen doing the background chatter in the song were Detroit Lions players, Lem Barney and Mel Farr, who were his friends. He even tried out for the Lions at one point!!

Spot On Angela, on the Human Race not learning lessons from past mistakes, it is appalling that songs like this and Black Sabbath's War Pigs and Rush's Witch Hunt are just as relevant today as the day they were released. Wars, ignorance, fear and hate just never stop, the day we decide to drop our arms and cooperate with each other to take care of the entire human race seems Millennia away, sadly. We would be so much better if we valued cooperation as much as competition. Off my soap box but the world is even more dangerous than when I was a young man, I hoped we would be a little better by now but we are now a lot worse!

People's Park was de facto established as a public park by local activists in 1969 and the city and the university spent five decades since then fighting against it until they eventually won the battle to develop the land. And even though People's Park was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2022, construction on a housing project for students and veterans began there last July.

2 things about this beautiful song: Berry Gordy thought the LP was too depressing and wasn't too keen on releasing it...When Marvin threatened to take it to another label, Lucky for his bank account he gave in. And witnesses in the studio the night it was recorded ( " Standing In The Shadow of Motown" 2002) swore Bassist James Jamerson was "Pulled away from his favorite bar on his night off so drunk He couldn't stand, so he played it laying down on his back." Merry x-mas.

I've said for MANY MANY years that ALL the leaders of every country or tribe or anything in this entire world should be forced to listen to two songs until they fully understand the meaning of these songs!! This song by Marvin Gaye is the first song, and IMAGINE by John Lennon is the second song!!❤❤❤❤❤❤ Could you IMAGINE if every leader in the ENTIRE world would UNDERSTAND the meaning behind THESE TWO songs and live by THEIR messages!???😮 It could possibly lead to piece on the planet!!😮❤

If it's not properly explained in schools today (and what is?), we didn't have an all volunteer military for the Vietnam War. Congress and the President re-instituted the draft. Right after HS you had to register.

This version not the definitive album version of What’s Going On. Sounds like one of Marvin’s early mixes of the song pushing the saxophone forward while the double vocal track is missing and the orchestral arrangement, as well as James Jamerson’s iconic bassline, sounds lower/pulled back in this mix. Still a great song but not the version that shows this song out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6HXmXeNpLWAfLMsi=VAHKXmRzLGKI7W-p
