i have the same stove it works great but i made my own cap for it. you need a make a shield that covers 50%. Right now the wind is trying to blow down the pipe, so yes it will fill the tent and almost put the fire out. By making a cover for the cap it will pull a vacuum and that stove will cook you out of the tent. Just make sure the cap can spin and face shield into the wind. Would be good tip for a video.
@shazmodeus27959 ай бұрын
random thought, but can you fabricate your DIY cap to act like a weathervane? So that the wind always turns it so the shield is protecting the pipe?

I don’t normally use wood stoves on the ice for a few different reasons but some tips for woods stoves: 1) burn the driest hardwood you can find. 2) keep the fire hot. 3) keep the pipe vertical and add an adjustable cap (that you can turn depending on wind direction). 4) extra wind breaks are key, if you have a windy day, sometimes it’s hard for the smoke to escape from the stack, you need to be prepared with additional caps/windbreaks.

Mav, you need to give the wood stove another chance. Three main ways to stop smoke in tent...keep a burning fire in store to create draft, keep pipe vertical and create a block for the wind on windy nights. Also, the type of wood makes a big difference. Burning bark creates a lot more smoke. Come to Lake Winnipeg and I will host you on the ice.

He had it slanted. That was the problem. Air traveling side ways slanted met and pushed it back. Learn how to control smoke first before learning how to make fires.

tips for the stove in case you wasn’t sure. the knob on the pipe is the damper you want to leave that wide open when you’re starting the fire and trying to make as much heat and flame as possible and when you get it to a temp you like you close it down and it will slow the fire down and make it burn slower and longer, when you need to put more wood on you open the damper and put wood on let it take back off good and then shut the damper back down. i hope this helps.

I feel your pain with the smoke !! The first couple times ice camping I got smoked out in the middle of the night and was so frustrating. Every time your out you will learn something new . Tips .. a wind deflector is a must on the end of the pipe , bring a piece of plywood to put under the stove to stop the melting that will happen when the stove is working properly and try and cover the whole ice in something to stop the heat from melting. Did a 4 day trip and when I left the floor had around 5 inches of water everywhere from the heat of the stove . All that water and being cold from the stove smoking us out all night really sucked .. happy fishing MAV

Mav get a better built stove with a good draft system as well as better fitting chimney and taller above your roof. Many use a wood stove for ice camping and hunting and they roast you out. Next time in goods country you wont smoke yourself out😂…. Ps way better than 1/2 time Super Bowl show!!!

Looked like a Winnerwell stove. Nothing wrong with those. Top of the line. Definitely user error. The spark arrestor was clogging up which will cause smoke to enter the tent. A taller pipe makes a big difference too. Bring a wire brush next time to clean the spark arrestor. Also, always do a test run at home to work out any kinks.

Another fun video - cheers, Mav ✌️ you gotta start getting standing dead wood when you can. That stuff you’re finding already on the ground will be wet and won’t give you much heat at all and will keep going out like it was in this video. As much wood kept in the tent the better too, you can imagine how putting a frozen piece of wood in the stove will dramatically drop the temperature so you’re constantly having to keep heating it up instead of heating the environment.

Great video Mav. Best one yet imo. Loved it. Keep your fire as hot as it can be and maintain a positive updraft. In wind like that you need a larger stove and really dry wood. . Also be sure your stack is at least 3 feet above your tent. The higher it goes the better the updraft. Hey one thing, how thick was that ice yall were on?? I know you wouldn't be out there if it wasn't safe but because of the angle it looked like it was no more than a few inches thick. Can you always tell us how thick the ice is where you're at? I kept worrying yall were going straight through to the bottom man. I know you know exactly what your doing but I'm just. curious how thick it is. Thanks man. Great video straight up. I liked it a lot. It seems Like so many other youtubers have forgot their roots. Now they're no longer van lifers they are more like rich van lifers and they don't exactly give the same quality content they used to. I know things change all the time but I'm glad you have kept it real. I have to say i like you at home filming in even better than when you travel around the world but maybe is just me. I love your content wherever you go. Thank you for sharing it all man.!!!
