The name of one of Prof. Basham's book is The Wonder That was India. It is a timeless classic. And I do not think Mrs. Thapar can hold a candle to Prof. Basham. More importantly , Prof. Basham's book is largely shorn of any anti-india bias but has some errors in his interpretation. This is only to be expected of a pathfinder which Prof. Basham certainly was. Prof. Basham was wary of any Marxist input into his own study and teaching of history to his students . He advised cold-blooded evidentiary understanding of the past. Romila Thapar's silliness is all her own, with hefty influence of her brother.

Also, please do good research. It is not A L Bhashyam as you say, it is A L Basham, a Britisher and the book is called the wonder that was India. It is actually quite positive in its own way on India and its history. basham was the foremost of the western scholars of his time at Oxford or Cambridge. Again, it is important to be accurate or your enemies will simply destroy you and in sequence the Dhrmic perspective that you fight for.

I think we give too much importance to Marxism. In fact, but for the Bolshevik success in 1917 in Russia which was (no more than a coup organized by Germans through their spy Lenin to defeat Russia during the First World War), today we would not have heard about Marx who was a pamphalatter, but at best a muddle-headed author who wrote a rubbish called Das Kapital which didn''t sell 100 copeis till 1880. All his books are abusive pedantry and all the ideas are plagiarized from other thinkers. Even in the socialiist circles Lassale and others were much more importnat. In sum, Marx is a poor reflection of the 19th century European zeitgeist of Darwinian scientism and socialism which was propagated in several versions of which Marxian is the least important. Now, coming to religion. The idea of "religion" is specific to the Abrahamic religiosity. Except for the Hebrew, Aramaic and to an extent Greek and Latin (for the New Testament appeared first in Greek), you can't find an exact translation of "religion" in any other ancient or pre-Abrahamic language. Chinese coined the term "zhingjiao" when the Christian missionaries arrived there in the 16th century and which basically referred to Christianity. But when Buddhism flourished in China in the Tang dynasty, Buddhism was not called zingjiao or religion. The Abrahamic religion stands for a "true" religion in contrast to all other religions which by definition are false. Sanatan has evolved out of the primitive religiosity but highly philosophized unlike other primitive religions. Sanatan or Hindu is not a religion in this sense , but stands for the manifold relationship between the man and all the other being as Brahman wherein there is no question of race, gender or even the distinction between the animate and the inanimate. This means love and compassion for all and hatred for none.

Karl Marx was not against religion. He wrote, “religion is the sigh of the oppressed”. The Soviet Union had four approved religions, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Judaism. The government used to pay the salaries of the priests, used to maintain the religious places. Karl Marx wrote, "... Karl Marx born in German federation, resided till death in England 1880s. When Soviet came in to existence afterwards in the backdrop of 1917 bloodless revolution, they began to form their own kind of communism, a later done by the Chinese government.

The eminent speaker doesn't know that Prof. D.P. Chattopadhyay the philosopher who had written many books on Indian philosophy was not the one (namesake) who was a politician. By coincidence politician Chattopadhyay also taught philosophy. The politician D.P. Chattopadhyay was much younger to the philosopher. Philosopher Chattopadhyay was a very revered person in Bengal but not his name sake who was considered as an opportunist. .

Mr Balakrishna, we need more depth in your discussions if you are to take on highly trained academics. Simply giving superfluous comparisons about Marxism and religions will not do. Maybe OK for emotionally charged but wisdom or intelligence challenged modern Indians but you would lose and get badly mauled if you are not more deeper and thorough. Marxism at its core is a political philosophy designed to overturn existing power structures in a society and replace them with those of the people who propagate Marxism. It is a religion in that sense, I.e. a sociopolitical construct. This is what the original two religions were too, more about gaining and perpetrating the power of the practitioners than having to do directly with any deep thinking about god or the hereafter. Second, just as the other religions have been tremendously successful at reordering the societies and politics after their practitioners came to power, so too do the Marxists. Furthermore, Marxism [promises the same utopia to the janTa, as do the other religions, just the difference is that it does so now and here, not after death and in heaven. That is why it is far more powerful nowadays thank religion.it also divides the people into the true followers and those who are not with it, who are caricatured as enemies of the revolution. This is another key conjunction between religion and Marxism. So, it will not leave any person alone, unless the entire population professes fealty to its principles. There are many more, but again a simple pointing to some book of Marx or so will not do to convey your point.
