Of all Mary's relationships, I think my favourite is one that isn't even a romance, and that's the bond that she and Tom share. I really love how close they get, especially after she loses Matthew. They develop this beautiful friendship and a sibling-like closeness that's just so nice to watch.

I think you either love or hate the character of Mary. I personally adore her, because, as Michelle Dockery so brilliantly explained, she began the series as this mean unlikeable rich girl but then as the show progresses you can see so many more facets to her personality, some better, some worst. She's done so much growth in the span of six seasons, always taking in mind though that "growth" does not mean perfection. Mary is a flawed character and I think that's what's so alluring about her, that just like like Thomas Barrow she can be mean spirited and she often finds herself in troubles of her own making, but she's in no way evil or irredimable ; she can be very caring to the people she loves, she is resourceful and so remarkably strong. Love or hate her, you can't deny that Mary Crawley is a masterfully constructed character and so very thrilling to watch.

One of the many things I like about Michelle Dockery's view on Mary is that she isn't blind to Mary's faults. I've seen quite a few actors who play mean characters, but insist that the character actually isn't mean, despite evidence to the contrary. Michelle is under no delusions about Mary, yet that doesn't stop her from liking the character. Which only adds to her portrayal.
@MilA-eh3gf5 жыл бұрын
I agree. I've heard so many actors describing their character, even villains, as "misunderstood". Somehow having a reason behind henious acts make those acts ok. Seeing Michelle so honest about Mary's character even when Mary is far from a villain is refreshing. I respect her and I respect Lady Mary, these two ladies are both incredibly strong.
@Kelaiah015 жыл бұрын
@@MilA-eh3gf I suppose it has to do with something I heard about acting: unless you really like the character, you won't be believable. Perhaps a lot of actors believe that, and try to justify their character in order to help themselves cope with all the terrible things they do. Thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case with Michelle.

And as for Edith, she gives as good as she gets so I think ppl feel sorry for Edith as she is rather unfortunate. Mary is deep and mysterious, one of my all time favourite characters.
@mars_girl5 жыл бұрын
Edith has bad luck, but so much stuff is brought upon on herself. She literally started a fire. Should Mary have (forced Edith to) told Bertie about Marigold? No. But you know that Mary isn't holding Edith at a higher standard than herself, because she rejects Matthew's proposal the first time specifically because of Pamuk, and they don't get engaged until after she informs him. I think that's the real difference. Even though Mary can be cold, she's honest. I love you bringing up the servants' quarters in episode one! When she says, "I always apologize when I'm in the wrong; it's a habit of mine." Pure gold! As Michelle said in this interview, Mary knows what she's doing because, even when she goes against it, she has a moral compass, and a strong personal sense of right and wrong. I agree with you. Mary is my absolute favorite daughter out of the three. Always honest and blunt, and mentally and emotionally strong. She is someone I could look up to. She started off as a snob in season 1, but Matthew brought the caring person out of her (a.k.a "her softness"). It was amazing to see her relationship grow with Anna, and through her with Bates and see her help them both attain their happy ever after. With Anna, she proved she could be a good and reliable sister; a confidant and a helper. She would have helped Edith but she turned her away, there was no repairing a relationship that the other wanted to keep broken. They stopped being sisters a while after Sybil died. Another example of what a good sister she could be was her relationship with Tom. For Sybil's sake, both she and Matthew accepted Tom. And throughout the show Mary was there for Tom and to listen to him. She treated him as an equal, not as a former chauffeur or servant. It was painful to watch Mary mourn Matthew's death, but it was equally inspiring to see her stand back up stronger than before and take the reins of Downton along with Tom.

When I first heard Michelle Dockery’s real life accent literally gasped, you can hear the Essex in her, but she does Mary Crawley so well that I expected her to be super posh in real life as well!

Just finished watching the movie- these clips are much better. Many black English male actors are now acting in American movies, we are always surprised to hear their real accents. They have the American accent down pat__sounds like my sons!☺️🇬🇧🇺🇸

Honestly Mary was the best in season 2 and 3. She was amazing with Mathew. Hated her in season 5 and 6 because how evil she was to Edith. Michelle however always did an amazing job

Ugh Edith was the worst. I could never forgive her writing to the Turkish ambassador

@@GernotKienzer she wanted edith to be unhappy she couldn't stand the thought of her sister having a title because she wanted to be the best. She slept with Pamuk and played the victim about how they wanted to ruin her life and reputation but she obviously didn't think of that herself for even a minute. Also if you yell at your mother that a guy died while fucking you with an open and someone hears it oh well....its kinda your fault too (edith found out by daisy but she heard mary yell it in a conversation with their mother in case you dont remember)

The character of Mary could easily have been quite dull and two dimensional but thanks to fine writing and a wonderful actress, the character is really brought to life as a real, complex and emotional woman beneath the cool facade.

I was always enthralled by Lady Mary. Having grown up with four sisters I was used to cat fights. Her complicated sibling relationships seemed normal to me, apart from the unpleasantness with the Turkish ambassador of course. Lady Edith emerged as the most compelling in my imaginary world. Like all of us they were prisoners of time and place. We are riders on the storm.

When a writer can surprise the actor about their character, you know that they're great. Michelle Dockery is an excellent actress and the best choice for the part of Mary. Topped off with the amazing writing of the show, it's a match made in heaven basically.
