The original meaning of Mihrab in the Arabic language does not include "Temple" It is one of three meanings as it is stated in Arabic classical lexical references as well as in Pre-Islamic poetry: 1) the most honorable place of a house, 2) a private chamber usually used for prayer (and hence the translation sanctuary albeit more of a personal one) 3) a Palace on high ground. The later use of the word for the prayer niche where the Imam stands to lead the prayer in a mosque is directly derived from the first original meaning. Imran and his wife may have lived in the temple based on ancient Christian tradition however, the link to the Quran on this issue is mere conjecture in my opinion with all due respect of course.

My impression is that without this link to the proto evangelium the reference to the "provisions found with Mary" does not make sense?

@@hans471 It may not make sense only based on the prior assumption that the Quran draws on and borrows from previous ancient Christian traditions. The Theological Muslim position does not concede that assumption. As a matter of fact, there is no direct evidence of any early Muslim community access to those traditions.

@@WaelHamadeh that's not my assumption. My question is: what is the meaning of this sentence in the Quran without using the Christian context? How do you assign meaning for the quranic text and what would be the theological impact of these provision which are not explained within the Quran?

@@hans471 Mary and her son peace be upon them are revered figures in Islamic theology. The Quran 3:37 asserts with regards to Mary: "So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber (mihrab,) he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this coming to you?" She said, "It is from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh provides for whom He wills without account."" As such, Mary being a chosen blessed woman was provided for by God. It is part of Muslim belief that is independent of ancient Christian tradition. But the main issue that prompted my original comment was the use of the word "Mihrab" in the Quran. One cannot infer from that word the conclusion that Mary or her parents were dwelling in the Jerusalem Temple. The word only refers to a personal "sanctuary" that Mary peace be upon her used to dwell in.

@@WaelHamadeht is the theme and language of the ayah that Dr Reynolds implies that it is borrowing from the traditions of the Proto gospel of James. For example, the story itself, reference to provisions and mihrab. In isolation you are right it doesn’t imply that mihrab implies temple. However, it is the connecting of the dots that brings out its meaning. Most language is interpreted this way.

The Quran confirms and honors what came before it, and corrects the changes by the scribes. Scholarship has shown there are 100,000 differences in the New Testament, and the Old Testament was compiled from many sources by many different authors.

This, as well as, the Companion of the Cave story, is one of the most poignant points that demonstrates the Quran’s close connection with other late antiquity texts and traditions. Your book, the Quran and the Bible, is my gateway for learning these connections.

@@IslamOriginal14 _The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus_ (Sura 18, _The Cave_ ) is not scripture: it is a Christian morality tale. Likewise, the story of Dhul Kharnayn (Alexander the Great, aka the 'dual horned one'), which inspired part of Sura 18, is not scripture: it is a 'pagan' hero quest called, _The Alexander Romance_ . The criticisms people had, that many of the stories in the Qur'an are 'tales of the ancients', are valid.

@@gavinjames1145 Quran says it is a confirmation of what came before, and an exposition. These stories are rooted in religion, be it indigenous or mainstream.

@@IslamOriginal14 If the Qur'an is confirmation of what came before, then why is what came before not good enough? There is very little exposition in the Qur'an, but there is typically a loss of texture (literary detail) in the retellings of older stories and scriptures (unnamed persons, places or numbers), which is to be expected from an oral mode of transmission. However, these missing details can be found in the original texts, which means they are more reliable than the Qur'an. Just compare Sura 12, _Joseph_ , with _Genesis_ 37:1-50:26 For example: Which brother along with Joseph is dearest to their father inQ.12:8? (see Gen.37:3); Who is the Egyptian in Q.12:21? (see Gen.37:36); To whom did traders sell Joseph, for how much, and which denomination of currency in Q.12:20? (see Gen.37:28). Each time you will see that the Qur'an is inferior to the original text! Now, regarding the sleepers in the cave, what is significant about the silver coins with which one of them goes to buy food such that they were brought to people's attention (Q.18:19 and Q18:21), which the Quran does not expound? The answer can be found in the original text(-s)!

@@gavinjames1145 quran calls itself a book of remembrance. Also the criterion or cleaver (between good and evil), a healing, glad tiding, a guide, and more. It's not a book of history or poetry or whatever genre. And to answer your first question, and address my point, phonetics is important when we study religion. If we were to read the ancient manuscripts in their original languages we would be able to write an essay on a word's meaning within a verse. We can take all religions as one, as God is one, and unite on that. And Quran is Furqan on them all.

This is not something new that Christian evangelists suddenly discovered in the Qur'an. It has been debated, discussed and explained a long time ago. Even during the life time of the Prophet: It was narrated that Al-Mugheerah ibn Shu‘bah said: “When I came to Najraan, they (the Christians of Najran) asked me, ‘How come you read in the Quran (what means): {O sister of Haaroon}, whereas Moosa lived way longer before ‘Eesa (Jesus)?’ When I went back to the Messenger of Allah, I asked him about that, and he said: ‘They used to name their children after their Prophets and pious people who had lived before them.’” [Muslim]

It's funny, Christians really think they can find new "errors" in the Quran. Islamic theology has been dealing with these questions since the beginning of Islam, no one is as critical and differentiated as Islamic theologians when it comes to the Quran and especially the Hadith. To all Christians you will find nothing "new" and certainly nothing that shakes the faith of Muslims.

Compare the term "Children of Israel" "Children of Adam" "Children of Abraham"....do they literally mean what they mean? Or are they being poetic?

​@@wanrazulthis is not likely in this case there because Mary's mother is called ima'at Imran, which translates to the wife of Imran. This is analogous to calling one's mother, wife of Adam.

No where is the name of the wife of Imran, Mary’s mother, named “Ann” in the Quran. She never prays for either a boy or a girl. This is the verse “Mention when ‘Imrān’s wife said: “O my Lord, I have vowed that what is in my womb will be devoted exclusively for You. So, accept (it) from me. You, certainly You, are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” 3:35. Never does the Quran mention anything about where the wife of Imran (Mary’s father) was. You say at 3 min 15 secs that Ann was in the “Mihrab”. When in the beginning you say that Mary was in the “Mihrab”. This is the verse about the sanctuary (mihrab) “So, her Lord accepted her, a good acceptance, and made her grow, a good growth, and made Zakariyyā her guardian. Whenever Zakariyyā visited her at the MIHRAB, he found food with her. He said: “Maryam (Mary), from where did you have this?” She said: “It is from Allah. Surely, Allah gives whom He wills without measure. 3:37 “Mihrab” is just a nook. Not necessarily a prayer niche. I wonder what the agenda or purpose of this channel and this video in particular is. So many mistakes in under 4 mins. Really disappointing. I can understand if you don’t want people to think of the Quran as a revealed book, but you are revealing too much of yourself in the process. This level of scholarship is high school stuff. Stop embarrassing yoursel
