Mary Martin sings while Oscar Levant plays the piano on this Johnny Burke and James Monaco tune. Also in the scene is Basil Rathbone. It is from the 1940 film Rhythm on the River which also costarred Bing Crosby & Charley Grapewin.

I saw this movie once 25 years ago, and I'd forgotten this cute number. It's almost surreal to see MM, Rathbone, and Levant in the same scene, but they're all great: Watch Rathbone "in the scene," reacting to everything as though he's hearing it for the first time; MM proves again that she is the greatest (along with Garland) "declaimer" of a song, seeming to sing it as if it's occurring to her right then; Levant sounds like Art Tatum... not bad for a "classical" guy. What a genius.

Mary looked like ten million bucks in his scene. I will always wonder why she never quite made it in Hollywood? Oscar was always fabulous just being his wonderful, incredibly gifted self in the movies.

I think that Mary favored the live stage over film. She is the mother of the late Larry Hagman.

Whenever I see Mary Martin, I think of Peter Pan. As for Basil Rathbone, he was & will always be Sherlock Holmes. As for Oscar Levant, he is the main reason I would sit through this movie.
