I used to think that, but now there are things about him that show he's not lovely. I disagree, i think its good for people to see what depression looks like and can do to a person. Remember Brandon was sucidal when he first met Mary. I'd imagine he's been depressed a long time. If you are interested in learning about how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can affect health a mental health later in life, there's some great videos on it. Brandon probably has almost all of the 6 criteria. Parents that split up, substance abuse in family, violence in family, prison in family, abandonment from parents, etc. It's pretty interesting stuff. Actually yes he does LEGALLY he doesn't own that house even if he did 60% of it is theirs LEGALLY, especially more since it is on their land. Maybe Americans should be researching laws and property rights , just because you enter another land your rights & privileges doesn't make you entitled to anything, even if you pay for it...or land there. So LEGALLY she can kick him out anytime and LEGALLY she has way more rights to the child (which sucks because she is nuts but he's an idiot) & she is hesitant about marriage because divorce is ILLEGAL there & rarely happens, usually only rich people can do it. I saw from the beginning how she played him & played her family too No way did she have a dance scholarship with those moves her moves are awkward & her grandparents would hit the roof. He even caught her in the lie when she tried to say her grandparents paid for college. Look at their furniture & tv that is expensive plus her clothes , plus her teeth are very nice, & her hair is layered. All that money did not go to the house. Or even to her grandparents. Since he still has to work. The reason she doesn't tell Brandon what her grandfather really says is because she is calling the shots to get her way & she is actually in charge of the house.

I mean... was Mary and Brandon's relationship ever good? I'm sure he is depressed having to put up with Mary but I also think this is just Brandon. A 22 year old who's career was "odd jobs, bagging groceries, did roofing once" couldn't possibly have sent Mary $70,000 in less than 2 years. He also wasn't working the entire time they filmed him in OR, he wasn't going to school, he wasn't really doing anything, he was fine with living in an RV in someone else's driveway, hard work and ambition clearly wasn't his forte to begin with. Yohan has given up all need for pretending with Danielle, she's pushed him too far and disrespected him too much. She tricked him into marrying her, she pretended to be way richer than she was and promised to bring him to America, only changing her mind AFTER the marriage. You can't marry someone under false pretenses, then get mad that the person is demanding things of you or doesn't treat you well, she knew what this was from the jump, she was the tricker, not the trickee. If I was an attractive, tall, very physically fit guy with a nice body and I married an old school marm looking women, who's way older, short, out of shape, who can't give me children, we have nothing in common, come from completely different backgrounds/religions AND that person treated me like crap and like she was superior just because she's American, I'd definitely be demanding SOMETHING useful or good out of the relationship. I really think that if Yohan was the young, hot, eye candy women in this situation, who was willing to give up true love for money/a better life and Danielle was the older, unattractive man who lied about his wealth and isn't providing a good life for the women, everyone would HATE the man! The situation should be no different just because the roles are reversed. Yohan tried to use Danielle to get a better life, that failed. Danielle used Yohan for sex and as a trophy husband to show off and boost her confidence, she got what she wanted out of this at least, no one should feel sorry for her. Yohan got the least out of this arrangement, all he got out of this was a headache.

I feel like Mary's just kind of a dead weight, she doesn't try to help and figure out real productive ways to generate income, and then she won't allow Brandon to thrive and have his own friendships or connections everything has to be filtered through her, I imagine she's probably demanding and he's just shutting down. There's nothing he can do that's right. I’m sure if he was able to get to the US he try to find a decent job to feel like he’s getting ahead a little bit. I don’t think he would get this sense of entitlement if she would of kept her end of the deal. He’s frustrated and after dealing with her BS with lying to him not taking him to the US and on top trying to hang out with her ex boyfriend while in the DR, I’m sure yohan has had enough. He’s mentioned it before that danielle just wants to live in the DR as if it’s always a vacation yet she belittles yohan for not contributing to the bills but she was fully aware of how much he was struggling before he met her. In his old job he was making little money and using that to help take care of his family and him being in the DR he’s still helping them out. Danielle knew good and well what she was getting herself into.. she just thought that she was going to be able to treat that man like a puppet and clearly it ain’t working out. She wants him to be a 50/50 partner but given what his earning ability likely is in the DR he is contributing (relatively) more and probably feels even further behind, whereas in the US he could earn more, contribute more and build up. His trying to get her to build additional wealth is pretty good evidence of this (not sure if this investment plan was the best idea, but her shutting it down without offering some sort of alternative wealth builder is also indicative she isn’t interested in what’s important to Yohan.

TLDR Chiming in for cultural context: It's a super, duper traditionalist practice to sit on an elder's lap during the wedding ceremony. It takes it's roots in olden days (i.e. ancient times) where marriages would often get arranged when the bride and groom were still children. I get your ick too, but considering the era, it was the equivalent of some little 12y.o. future duchess of York being aware that she'd been betrothed to the presently also-12y.o. future duke of Canterbury as dictated by their families/parents. Neither child fully fathoms the reality of 'marriage' besides the fact that there's gonna be a big ass fancy ball in town to celebrate it with all their friends, tonnes of food and the adults are running the show doing all the hard work pretty much. Understandably as wee children, experiencing the intricacies of the wedding rituals can be quite daunting and so adults often sat them on their laps as a way of comfort. Popular renditions include: the 'bride' would be sat on her father's (or any father figure e.g. uncle/godfather, grandfather) lap akin to to father-walking-daughter-down-the-aisle, whereby her sitting on her father's lap signified his protection and guardianship of her. So when she later scoots off his lap, it resembled the father giving-the-bride-away to the in-laws to now take on the duty of her safety, care all that jazz. TJ's explanation makes no sense to me though I'd wager it's true reasoning got lost in generational-translation that even he is unaware of. Being indian myself, I've never seen this happen irl in this day and age nor was it a thing for my grandparents wedding either. Same goes for my other indian friends and community I was raised in. I mean, I can't imagine me in my weight in my mid 30s (or early 20s) sitting on some elder persons like damn y'all really want hip surgery... But also no MIL would live to have her expensive saree wrinkled by my thunder thighs either lol. It was just as surprising and HUH????-worthy for me as I watched the episode too. That's not to say TJs' family's beliefs are invalid, but it just reinforces how diverse and variable indian cultural practices across families/states/countries can be and that we don't adhere to a single, unanimous "Indian" culture that western media tries to desperately perpetuate for convenience and simplicity.
