You're not kidding. The writing, the casting, the chemistry, headlined by the beautiful Mary Tyler Moore. Ted Knight brought his unique comedic talent. He was my favorite character, but I had a crush on Mary every since the Dick Van Dyke show. She was so stunningly beautiful, both inside and out. All in all, it was one of the greatest television shows ever created.

Mary Tyler Moore was a beautiful, talented actress - both in comedy and drama, something that not many Hollywood actors are able to do. I enjoyed watching her on the Dick VanDyke Show as well as the MTM show - always enjoyed her performances because they were done in a natural, understated way, that made her roles so believable. One of the most talented, endearing actresses from the golden age of TV, who left her mark. RIP Ms.Tyler Moore - you will be missed.

MTM was successful largely because of her supporting cast. She was not naturally comedic and overexposure of her was not a good thing. Her cataclysmic follow on shows are proof of that. I liked the first few years of her show. After that it wasn’t as good. I suppose others felt the same way because the ratings declined. They weren’t all that great for the other MTM show, Bob Newhart. The spin offs, Rhoda and Phillis tanked. But pop culture keeps up the myth that none of this is true. That idea is that CBS scored big with urban comedies. All in the Family was a huge hit. But it was a family show, not about a main character working in the city. The truth is that CBS took off its phenomenal rural hits because their ratings were beginning to slide. They weren’t crashing quickly, but they had run their course (example: Petticoat Junction, Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres). Mayberry RFD was a ratings hit but it was canceled too. A few years later, CBS was the number two network. ABC was number one and NBC was far behind. But ABC programming was Fred Silverman run. He was schooled in children’s tv. Hence, all his shows were basically for a kid audience (Happy Days, which had changed from its first two years, Donny and Marie, Mork and Mindy, Welcome Back Kotter, What’s Happening, Lavern and Shirley, and a lot of other flops meant for kids). Advertisers changed their methods: products weren’t matched with programming. Cars, tools, appliances, etc. were all advertised on shows which had child audiences. TV retreated into the cop show genre again: Barretta, Starsky and Hutch, Charlie’s Angel’s, etc. TV programming has never been as mature as it was in the 1950s. It’s advertising was never matched to the shows very well. Thus, commercials remain hideous and loud. Their gimmicks are abusing the audience in order to be noticed.
