It sounds like Mary is rushing the song...interesting how different the song sounds with her on the lead. I wonder if it would have became a hit if she had sung lead.
@kurtsupreme5 жыл бұрын
Most of the hits of Motown became hits again by other artists. This one was a hit for Adam Ant in the 1980's. Remember that it was discussed by HDH to have Mary sing lead on this song originally; however, they were overruled by Berry Gordy because he wanted Diane on it. Neither Mary or Diane have the same voices today that they had in 1964; however, if it had been determined that Mary would have been the lead singer (by the way, I was happy with Diane's voice, just not her actions), she would have been coached and nurtured to put her personal stamp on the song and it would have been practiced over and over until the producers got the sound and arrangement that they wanted. The same was done with Diane. We associate Diane's lead on this song; therefore, it is difficult to imagine that it could have been a hit with a different lead singer; however, it could have been.. We'll never know!
@EmpressReacts5 жыл бұрын
@@kurtsupreme absolutely agree 100%. We will never know :)
@kurtsupreme5 жыл бұрын
@John Edwards That isn't the point. We were discussing how interchangeable the artists are on Motown recordings and how Mary might have been the lead voice on "Where Did Our Love Go." We all know that Diane did a fine job on it once it was determined that she would be the lead on the song and the producers coached her on the sound that they wanted.
@NKPN20115 жыл бұрын
Empress We don't really know, but I think it's unlikely. Maybe a R&B hit but it seems unlikely that it would be a Pop #1 as it was with Diana. Mary's voice and singing (as Diana's) was a lot better in the 60's and 70's. She had a nice tone and she could carry a tune with much more consistency. But Diana's voice added something different to those HDH compositions. Something extra.

You know, tho I'm so grateful for The Supremes as We Know them. But I cannot agree that they WOULDN'T've had the SAME success or reached the same heights with Mary. I Can't. Because just as Diana developed her flair, Mary Definitely Had her Own as is evident and Motown Saw it. Mary just didn't and it wasn't cultivated. She Did have the voice that Would've had profound success had it been cultivated. And it was Much more stable and pure and definitely more Mature! They EACH had their OWN "something Extra" that No one else did that made THEM SUPREME! As Each Motown Group had remarkable success with THEIR uniquenesses, The Supremes with Mary would've BEEN of their Own phenomena just as with Diana, different or no. THEY WERE SUPREME and it WOULD'VE been Evident regardless, because they BROUGHT it, and it stood OUT even tho they WERE relegated to certain Rolls to play. THEY were STILL UNDENIABLE and you HAD to look at them and pay attention even THO "DIRECTED" towards focusing on the front woman.... and the control SNATCHED your focus Away from them.. On purpose BECAUSE of that! Mary Wells, the first MAJOR STAR had phenomenal success withOUT all of that, and DIDN'T have the FLAIR of a Supreme. Dusty had a sound MUCH Like Mary Wilson's, and was phenomenal Without the kind of treatment and influence of Motown Magic! You CAN'T 'TELL' me that with all they had Going for them, it wouldn't have happened with The Supremes had Mary been lead singer with The Motown Machine behind them and had SHE has the MINDSET to "BE" and Do it! I DO know that it'd've BEEN MORE of a GROUP Dynamic tho instead of what it became, and they ALL "WOULD'VE" risen to Ultimate Stardom as they were designed to BE! And it Would've been BEAUTIFUL! And most of all, it Would've been "FUN!"

Sadly Mary never seemed to understand that she did herself a disservice by singing Diana’s leads.
