In today video, I cover some tactics and things to keep in mind for making going to the dentist easier for kids with autism. Dental visits for children with autism are difficult, especially if it’s the child’s first time. If your child freaks out about dentists in general or have tried to bring him/her to the dentist recently and experienced problems, these strategies should help. Overall, it comes down to practicing dental visits and preparing for a dental visit with your child using your own tools. Without assessing the situation, creating goals, and practicing, you’ll be creating more problems in the future rather than resolving them now to prevent them.

Dr. Mary Barbera "fell" into the world of autism in 1999 when her firstborn son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism one day before his third birthday. In the last 2 decades, Mary went from almost nothing about autism to becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, writing a bestseller, The Verbal Behavior Approach (now translated into more than 10 languages) and obtaining a PhD. with an in-depth knowledge of some of the best ABA autism strategies. In 2015, Mary began her first online course on autism that has already been purchased from parents and professionals in more than 45 countries and now sells 3 courses online. With more than 2 decades in the world of autism, both as a parent and as a professional, Mary is in a unique position to help you, especially if you live or work with a child with autism who also has delays or language disorders. Its mission is to change things for 2 million children with autism (or signs of autism) by 2020 through online training and advocacy.

I know this video is old, but I appreciate your insight, we need more professionals like you speaking out on ways to make things easier for individuals affected when autism. With the autism rate being 1 in 54 at this point, we need more medical professionals and schools to have dedicated offices and classrooms for autistic children. I took my child to the dentist recently, she has autism and I called prior to the appointment to make sure they can accommodate an autistic child, they did nothing but say her behavior of stemming and crying was simply bad behavior, they also tried to put her under sedation just to examine her teeth, they tried holding her down and at that point I ended the visit because it was unproductive and was making my little one very upset.

Would you let your child know before time? For example I keep a calendar up on the wall for my son to keep track of what's coming up next but I'm hesitant about writing down the dentist appt. Because the last time we did that for his Dr.'s appt. He spent an entire week anxious, nervous, scared saying no dr, no dr in the morning and before bed. It was heart breaking. Of course I did my best to reassure him but didn't help much.
