Over the years, I’ve come across multiple parents of children with autism who tell me “my child is picky when it comes to eating.” Feeding and autism can become complicated and a huge ordeal if your child or client doesn’t like a variety of foods. However, there are some measures you can take to improve the autism and eating behavior issues you might be having. In today’s video, I’m going to review some tips to start helping autism kids with eating problems eat a healthier variety of foods. For more help in getting started to turn autism around for your child or client, download my free three-step guide below.

In the last 2 decades, Mary went from almost nothing about autism to becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, writing a bestseller, The Verbal Behavior Approach (now translated into more than 10 languages) and obtaining a PhD. with an in-depth knowledge of some of the best ABA autism strategies. In 2015, Mary began her first online course on autism that has already been purchased from parents and professionals in more than 45 countries and now sells 3 courses online. With more than 2 decades in the world of autism, both as a parent and as a professional, Mary is in a unique position to help you, especially if you live or work with a child with autism who also has delays or language disorders. My son will be 4 in November. He's been in feeding therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy since he was 20 months old. He frequently gets jagged on the "easy foods list" you mentioned. If we provide him with the easy foods frequently, how do we prevent getting stuck on certain food items? For example, hot dogs are an item on his easy food list, but if we give them to him, even occasionally, he gets stuck on them and will eat nothing but them for anywhere as long as a week to months. His longest food jag has been on chocolate chip granola bars. He would eat nothing but them for every bit of food and he did this for roughly 3 months. We went through over 90 granola bars per week and a half. If we refused to give him granola bars, he would starve himself. The longest he's gone without food is 63 hours.

This is a great question. Feeding is very complex and without knowing him, I cannot comment much. Have you had a feeding evaluation from a BCBA who has special training in feeding. Many children's hospitals have feeding programs. It sounds like you may need a full evaluation for this. I also talk more about feeding in my courses . I'm a nearly 27 year old female I'm watching this for myself. I'm not diagnosed but an assessment I did with my counselor suggested that I might be on the spectrum. I've struggled with my diet since I was introduced to anything other than milk. I have problems with texture the most, I'm fine with eating meat, potatoes, dairy and fruit but I gag badly when it comes to vegetables. I want to improve my overall health but it's very hard to do when you hate vegetables.

Mary, my daughter is 4yrs old and refuses ALL veggies, so I started cheating I mix frozen fruits and fresh veggies with 100% juice or yogurt and freezing it into yogurt pops or popsicles. It's the only way I have been able to get her to eat veggies and I have tried everything! We have also learned foods like green beans, bananas, breakfast oat meal in a bowl and more make her throw up (no gaging, no warning, it just comes back up in a matter of seconds) but mashed potatoes with corn mixed, Asian rice, and spaghetti O's dont! I don't really see a texture difference except on the bananas cause they are slimy when cut and she doesn't like anything to look like a large portions so we have to cut it. Any ideas?

OK. No offense but this Mary Barbera is actually full of crap. No feeding specialist or speech language specialist would EVER recommend sneaking food into a child with eating difficulties diet. In fact, minute one of workshops is handing you a paper bag and saying 'this has stuff in it, will you eat it?' It's very real to them and eating is scary so NEVER trick them. There are complex foods (toast), melting foods (jelly) There is way more to this than you think. This is not the website you should be visiting, in fact, it's more harm than good if you have a problem eater as opposed to a fussy eater. If it's an autistic child, this site will do your child more harm than good.

I have a 5 year old who will only eatgluten free chicken tender SKIN, devours apples, Hawaiian bread, vanilla ice cream, and gummy fruit snacks. Thats it! He used to eat brown rice and oatmeal. He seems to WANT to eat other stuff when we are eating but he can't seem to get it pass his lips. Sometimes we will get him to put something in his mouth and he will almost gag on it. We have been giving him probiotics, CBD, cod liver oil and try to use the powder veggie and fruit vitamins in his juice....he isn't under weight...and is VERY VERY active. but we dont know what else to do to get him to eat more solid foods. Is it because he is picky or is there something more going on???

Hi! 😉 My name is Brandy and I have a question. I loved your video and really find it interesting. So I have a 3yr old autistic son who is nonverbal. He was diagnosed with autism, a global learning disorder, and a sensory disorder. (I know this video is old but I had to ask) 🤔 How does being non verbal and being a picky eater connect? I ask because my son won't eat hardly ANYTHING! I'm just curious if you know the reason these 2 things go to together? Thanks for your video and I will be subscribing! Yay!

Hello! My son is already 11, diagnosed with dyspraxia at around 4 (he’s had speech therapy and psychomotricity for 4 years) and autism at 10. I’ve been struggling with his picky eating since he was 2 and nothing seems to help much. Right now he’s actually eating even less types of foods and refuses to try anything new. Obviously I’m trying to get him seen by the specialist unit at the hospital (I’m in the UK) but it’s hard to get an appointment and I can’t afford private care. I’ll try these tips, but do you have any other suggestions?

My son is 8, he's on the spectrum. The only way he eats veges and fruits is pureed. He can't swallow them when they're whole, he gags and sometimes vomits. We've attributed this to sensory processing disorder. He doesn't like stew so it's just pasta/rice with cheese and light butter. Trying new foods is difficult so I don't insist a lot because the outcome is never good.

@marybarbera Жыл бұрын
It can help with picky eating issues + utensil use if she's sitting with you. That way, you can offer other foods along with reinforcing foods and help her learn how to use utensils and drink from a cup, etc. I'm not suggesting you confine her to a booster seat or high chair; she should be able to leave freely. However, it's MUCH easier to teach her necessary eating and drinking skills when eating/drinking only occurs at the table.

If you've ever had food go down the wrong way and realise how scary choking can be, you are closer to understanding. Eating is hard. Imagine how complicated it is to eat a piece of toast. Never 'sneak' food in and maybe talk to a dietician if he's not getting the right intake. My daughter has a gastro tube and it's such a relief. She gets a good diet and i'm not stressed. This is not an issue you should be youtubing.

As a parent of a 21 month old it is impossible to get him to eat anything but chicken nuggets and french fries for his meals. He will eat some chips or crackers fine, and the occasional fruit pouch and that's it. Any food that's mushy or sticky, or has the off texture that isn't dry or crispy he will not touch it. I am worried because I want him to get his nutrients in but he won't eat or even try anything. I present new food to him and he just turned away, and runny even try it. And just playing it didn't in front of him initiates a response of irritation and almost crying. It's so difficult and just want to find something that works

That sounds like our son when he was younger. He stopped talking after just beginning to say some words. The doctor said he will be doing good if he can go to regular school and make one friend. He had speech therapy all through grade school. He attended regular middle and high schools. Well, he’s now 22 and and not only does he have many friends, both male and female, but he holds three college degrees. He’s recently started his first job to earn money to continue his education to ultimately be a Paleontologist. My point being, your child just might surprise you and go beyond what some professionals may say. Don’t feel like this is where he will always be developmentally, because no one truly knows what the future holds. I wish you and child health and happiness.

Doctor,my child can mostly tolerate hard and or crispy foods such as crackers, and chips..she only eats at times chicken for protein.her vitamins come from baby cereals and 1brand of baby food.most of the time she drinks milk..she would cry or be upset by just looking at foods..she wouldn't even try to taste them.she was initially diagnosed with ASD.

First is not responding to his name. Don't know how to play properly with toy like he throws all the toys. He put everything in his mouth. Smell everything and does not utter any word except kela for 🍌 that's it.and very hyperactive with very less attention and sitting span. He never try to communicate for his needs like water food anything like kids of same age do by pointing towards item.

I used to Nanny a child that was similar. Luckily they make a fiber supplements called Benefiber that has no flavor and doesn't thicken up. Some stores have a generic equivalent. I used to mix it in with his water or his milk or his juice or whatever it was that he was willing to drink at the time. He also liked yogurt and I would stir it in but I would let it sit for a little bit and stir again just to be sure it has dissolved. It really helped the little boy I used to watch. It's great stuff !

I wonder what is inside McDonald's food because my son only wants fries and chicken nuggets from there. If I make it at home he does not touch it. He was just diagnosed at 2 almost 3 years old.

What about breastfed toddlers?

I am an advocate for long term breastfeeding, but the weaning tips are similar to bottles and pacifiers. Although it is not as impactful, it still may be important to wean or schedule feedings for picky eaters.

Introduce your child to the texture of regular bananas. Have your child make their own banana dishes so they'll feel they have control over what they eat
