In this video, I share part of a conversation between myself and Sarah Lechago where we discuss manding or requesting using wh questions. So, what is a mand exactly? Manding is the skill of asking questions, it’s a part of our daily life as we mand for items, mand for attention, and many other requests and needs. Manding for information involves asking questions that will receive meaningful information.
Dr. Sarah Lechago is an Associate Professor in the Behavior Analysis master’s program at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL). She directs the UHCL Verbal Behavior Clinic (VBC) and co-directs the UHCL Connecting the Dots program. Her research interests include verbal behavior, student and caregiver training, motivating operations, and diversity, inclusion, and equity. She has published in numerous journals including JEAB, JABA, and TAVB. She currently serves as an Associate Editor for the TAVB journal. She also serves as the founder and Chair of the Texas Association for Behavior Analysis’ (TxABA) Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity for Everyone (EDIE) Committee.

Dr. Mary Barbera. I fell into the autism world as an autism mom in 1999 when her first-born son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism. Since then, she became a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and best-selling author of The Verbal Behavior Approach. Since 2015, she’s created 3 autism online courses based on applied behavior analysis for professionals and "gung-ho" parents. Whether you’re looking for autism parenting strategies, working with developmental delays in children, or in search of autism help for professionals, I can encourage you to subscribe to the channel and join me on my journey. I’ll be providing weekly autism resources that you don’t want to miss.

I love this! When we teach manding with "wh" questions, many still go through a list of targets that may not relate to them and just use prompting methods to ensure correct responses - but this leads to the child just proceeding with the task with no motivation and only learn the targets through rote memorization. Without motivation and functionality of the task (which can be incorporated in natural teaching methods), the child is less prone to acquiring the skill and inhibiting generalization with limited motivation to the task. This was a good refresher that even us as BCABs tend to overlook - so thank you for this!

ABA is short for applied behavior analysis; ABA is behavioral management/therapy. Learn more by joining a free workshop at MaryBarbera.com.
