I noticed my daughter at 19 months with the following symptoms -not much eye contact -no name response -no waving -not pointing -no words -started spinning with corner eyes -tip toeing occasionally -lining up toys I decided to take away screen time and replace it with a lot of-face interaction (which she didn’t have before). A week later she started making eye contact and 2 weeks later she started to respond to her name. She also stopped spinning completely as well and shaking her head. She also used to hold on an object on each hand for a big part of the day now she rarely does it. She now high fives and waves. She imitates gestures when we sing nursery rhymes like (baby shark, twinkle little star if your happy and you know it clap your hands etc.) She still lines up certain toys but now she’s more busy exploring the house and more interested in books. It has been a month now and she has made so much progress. She still has no words and doesn’t point yet and on her own but started to point if I point. She would also spin (not excessively) but she would do it almost everyday and now she never does. So now I’m confused if it can be autism or screen induced behavior due to the over stimulation on her brain. (She watched cocomelon on repeat) She also didn’t have much interaction with me since I worked so much and I just feel so guilty. I quit my job and now I’m dedicating all my time to her.

My son was speech delayed too until he reached 3.2 years old. I suspected it was because he was always watching tv which is in English, we parents don't speak English in the house. It resulted confusion for him. Now he just turned 5, he's very talkative, talks in english & doing very good in school.

I have a 25 month old. No words, and I’m not sure he understands any. We are on a wait list for autism eval. No pointing, no imaginative play, when he does play, it’s not how they are intended. He likes to organize things over and over. Runs back and forth and is a toe walker. We have a hard time getting his attention or getting him to look at us. He does take our hand to things he wants. Example, he wants to go outside, he will grab our hand and place it on the door. Not sure if that’s the same as pointing? Anyway, we know some things just aren’t “normal” for toddlers his age. As a parent, it’s so hard to be helpless and not really have any answers or just be able to fix it. He is in speech therapy, and on a wait list for autism eval where we can get him more help. Appreciated your video.

My firstborn son did not really speak, he was born in 1988, was always watching. I thought perhaps he was deaf, but he was not. A very silent child, very shy. I was told not to worry about his language, "it would come". He was a select mute at school, had speech therapy. He speaks now mostly to his younger brother. He found out the useful word "fine". I was extremely impressed when he came home from his first day of grade 9 and said, without me asking, that he had someone from his grade 8 class in every one of his classes. Also found out later that the football team policed the cafeteria to watch for people who sat alone, and make sure they were not bothered by anyone. Mostly he was ignored, a silent, biddable child. At 16 he was given cognitive behaviour therapy, which allowed him to drive, get a job. He was finally, at age 18 diagnosed as a highly functioning autistic person. I was lucky, no tantrums, but many bullies bothered him, and he is so "literal". His regular music teacher was off on mat leave and the fellow who took over the band practices said, "If you are even 1 minute late to practice, don't bother coming anymore" My son was late once, due to bullying I learned later, and he did not ho back to band until the next year when his regular teacher was there, which I found out much later. My son gets jokes in movies, but he did not understand the replacement band teacher was joking about not coming back. So he is now a master of faking being "normal"as long as conversation is not attempted, other than to point out a mistake, or point you in the proper direction. I did something right, not everything, but some things.

As a first-time mom, I had a lot of questions that intimidated yet angered me from my son’s pediatrician. He just turned 2, but he can’t point at objects (but can use one finger on a phone/tablet), he can’t really follow many basic commands, he has limited speech (he’s in ST and OT), and resorts to whining or crying to get my attention instead of calling me “Mama”. He also tends to enjoy his own company at his daycare and not play with others as much. It gets frustrating for me at times, because he always points out at what he can’t do verses what he can do and say. He wants to get him evaluated, but he said at max, my son would be seen by six months to a year if I’m lucky. But until then, I’m happy that your video gave me solace instead of feeling Mrs constantly being compared to other toddlers his age.

I was assured it would in our evaluation -- but we also cut screens in January, and that's when I saw the biggest improvement. How is your daughter's speech? I'd bring the pointing thing up to your pediatrician and see what they have to say. Mine was always very reassuring that kids develop on such different timelines. ❤

He knows to memorize alphabet from A-Z,can count 1-100,knows the shapes,fruits,vegetables and everything is what he sees he can name that. The only thing is that he has difficutlties of constructing a sentence...Sometimes its frustrating to a mother seeing my son like this..i enrolled him in one nursery school and teachers noticed that he can perform and join acivities/exercises but short span of time only.he sometimes got difficulties of playing around with other kids (I dont know if it's maybe because he is my first bby and he get used to play alone)...

It can be hard to say for sure ! The best thing to do is if you are concerned to get a developmental evaluation. They can help decipher if it is autism, ADHD, something else or just typical development !

my son is enrolled as nursery 2 now.. he is good in school,he can write his complete name,can read sounds and phonics,easy to memorize and he cn answer u if u ask him what is the lesson on that day... the only thing that bothered me is when he is inside the school,he got tantrums sometimes.he likes to lay down on the floor and sometimes doesn't stay in one place but if u tell him to do his seatwork or anything about the lesson he cn answer.. he still dont know how to construct a sentence but I observe lately that he is quite quite aware in his environment. he is my only son and I'm not pretty sure if it is one of the reason y he doesn't like to play with other kids..

My son is 3 years old about to be 4 in April. He know so many words/numbers/animals/colors but no communication whatsoever. We live in Florida and they did an evaluation and he is going to start school on an IEP. They told me ABA therapy is something they only give to kids with a diagnosis for autism and that since my son hasnt been diagnosed he cannot receive it. I hope school and this IEP will still help him.

Hi Dr. Barbera, I'm a godparents to a twin boy and girl. They are now 8yrs old. They still can't talk properly but they can understand things around them and what we are telling them. They have eye contact at some point but if they are not confident to talk or tell the word they refuse to make an eye contact. They can write nicely by copying. Thanks. I've learned so much through your videos. My son is two and has been with Early Intervention since he was 16 months. He displays many of the autism signs. They will not do an Autism Diagnostic test until he is between 2 1/2-3 years old. Right now he's been labeled with a 30% developmental delay and speech delay. He receives speech, OT and DT weekly. Hoping to learn more and works with him at home. He isn't talking and his frustration level and tantrums have increased with age. He is learning basic sings but will jot use them consistently. I'm hoping to help him communicate better and learn ways to express his needs and wants.

My son is 3.5, he just started talking about 3 months ago. He taught himself to read because he loves letters, numbers, colors and shapes. He used to line up cars and other toys. He is not social and he doesn't give much eye contact. I started giving him Bioray Belly Balance and Calm for kids and he still isn't social but he plays normally with toys now, no more lining things up. He used to point at things he liked, like animals or numbers, etc and now he says what they are instead. I just ordered Bioray Focus to see if that helps even more. I also gave him Bentonite Clay for a short time to get rid of toxins and metals.

Thank you Dr. Barbera. This is a second video from you that I'm watching. My 31m.o. (i)observes and look but doesn't point. He uses his middle (rather than index) finger to explore new things; (ii)can follow some simple instructions like, "put your bottle on the table" or "throw this wrapper into the dustbin". However, I'm unsure if he is actually understanding the language or habituated to the behaviour since these activities are happening daily.; (iii)imitates his elder brother (5yr4m) in making sounds, reading 1 or 2 syllable words, & starting to have little bit of imaginary play like pushing toy cars around, hugging teddy bear. He has some toys where he is more fixated with (e.g., toys with blinking lights & sounds) but can grow tired of them after awhile and move on to another toy. I have not seen him playing with one toy for hours but maybe a little over an hour.

Same here, my child as getting speech 1x weekly. Due to Covid-19 all session stopped since March. He turned 3yrs old in May. Now he's no longer in Babies Can't Wait program. Hello miss, i have a 20 month old daughter, at her 18 month old wellness visit her doctor suggested that we enroll her in early intervention because she has a speech delay, now she babbles a lot and says random words like mama but she doesnt call say that to her mom. She just say random things with consonant and vowel sounds. She also doesnt respond to her name. She is a very happy kid though. She plays around, climb couches and jump over her kiddie fence and climb our bed. She also doesnt interact with her 7 month old baby sister. She was evaluated for early intervention and they said tht she qualifies for that since she is speech delayed, social delayed, cognitive and emotional delayed. Her motor is not bad but they gave her an 85 for that. She doesnt seem to understand us when we tell her simple things. But shebis smart enough to climb things and sneak into the kitchen even when we block the way. She will find ways to get into things. She loves singing even though she doesnt know the words yet. I work with autistic kids and i see many signs in my daughter and i think she has it. She is only going through early intervention for her developmental delays not for autism because hasnt been diagnosed yet. We have made an appointment for her to go see developmental specialist but the waiting period is 6-9months. We really want her to start a more intense intervention thats focus on autistic kids. So can her cognitive skills improve with early intervention?? We are more worried about her understanding and knowing things then even her speech. We just to understand whats right and wrong. My son had speech delay. I tried a speech therapist at age 3, but he refused any help. I stopped the therapy, because he absolutely hated it. He only started talking at 6 years old. Today he is 13. He can express himself well, does very well at school in all his subjects, but is still quiet. He does not like social interaction with others. He likes to keep to himself and plays video games all the time. He has managed to make a few friends and interacts with them. He does not have the typical signs of autism, (repetitive movements, toe walking, placing objects in lines, etc), but I do wonder. He has for instance the ability to focus on things for hours and likes to keep his daily routine. He was never a baby or a toddler. He just got into a bed at age 1 year and that was the last of the crib. He just walked to the potty and started using it. It was like he was in control of all these things, but I thought he was just independent. He never got excited about things like other babies do. He does not show his emotions like my other children. I have had comments from his teachers saying he does not want to participate in class activities, like dancing to music or get excited. I always tell them to leave him. If he doesn't want to do it and it makes him uncomfortable, why force it? Gosh, after writing all of this, I think I have my answer. Any way, I never want him to change. He's perfect just the way he is.

My son turning 2 next month, he has not called us mama, papa yet, he doesnot respond when we call him, but does pointing, sings his rhymes, knows colors, shapes, body parts. He even knows everything in some of his books like "brown bear brown bear what do you see, i love you mommy, I love you daddy, Goodnight etc". He used to eat well though takes a long time to feed him, but nowadays he doesnot eat solid food at home, only milk and banana. In daycare, teacher said he eats well, not by himself but when they feed him. So my and my husband are concerned about him. My mom said I started talking when I was 9 months, and talked very well by 1 year old because i had three older siblings. My husband was late talker, started talking after 3 years old. So we are confused and worried at the same time. I have been watching your videos and reading website. It gave me hope and peace that my son will be fine. But still I am expecting that you read my comment and suggest us your expertise. Thank you so much for the videos.

I was interested in hearing this, even though my 2 sons are now 33 and 29. I did not know back in 1988 and 1991 that speech delay was an early sign of autism. When my first son did not talk like the milestones stated, this was something I had never heard about, I didn't know you could have a child that didn't start talking like they should. I still am interested in learning about this, even though they are grown up now. Thank you. At one point, they gave my first son a diagnosis of PDDNOS, pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified. I think that was a way of saying they didn't know what to call it.

I was told that he scored high with play but is significantly behind in expressive language and auditory comprehension. I am super worried but I also know that God forbid he is diagnosed as Autistic. It's natural to be worried but just think about it and the fact that you have your daughter....to love on her and play with etc. You are not at a hospital or worse. Be thankful because it can be worse. That's how I stay positive. The therapies will help. You did not say anything about a diagnosis so maybe she just have a speech delay. I pray she is ok and whatever comes just love on her.

Hi, my daughter is 20months old. Her eye contact isnt the greatest at times for example when handing things to us she wont make eye contact but when she points things out she will make eye contact most of the time and also when playing, singing, and making her laugh. She names what she's pointing out and has about 100 words she can say but confuses some of them, she just started put 2 word sentences together all though its not always clear like more juice, more apple, bye bye mommy, diaper on, she also repeats word we say, and copies things we do for example sweeping or cleaning a spill. If she see's something she wants she'll point to it and look at us, she can tell us what she wants like juice and oranges, she follows instructions like go upstairs and sit, run, throw in garbage. But she doesn't show us toys she's interested in she'll just play with them and when asked what she's playing with she respond with babbling and sometimes a quick glance of eye contact. Sometimes she'll walk up to us and babble while looking at us as if she asked a question and is waiting for a response. Her tantrums aren't long and easily remedied. At the moment she will line up her teddy bears and sit next to them and laugh and babble with 1 or 2 understandable words sometimes. She brings us books but wont make eye contact, she sleeps pretty well other than the occasional night time wake up and talking. She loves to watch children playing outside but doesn't understand how to play with them. She will say hi to people when they say hi to her she just wont initiate a hi. She's also scared of loud appliances like vacuum and printer and the blender but i can get her to press buttons on them as long as I'm holding her. I honestly dont know what to think, at this point i feel crazy and confused. Most things that see off i notice is in her manurisms. I've had her evaluated but all they said they had was the lack of eye contact and to wait and see when she's 2. They say that she could be shy. I was a very shy child myself so i dont know what to make of this. Only thing i guess im extremely worried about is the eye contact and occasional ignoring, which you'll know she's listening because she'll laugh and smile if i say something funny afterwards. She can pretend to talk on the phone by saying Hello and then babbling, she will pretend to drink from an empty cup and she loves to pretend feed us fake food but thats as far as her pretend play goes. She also tip toes sometimes, wont tip toe in shoes, mainly in the house. Sorry for the long comment, im just confused and scared because i know girls are harder to diagnose. What do you think? Please help

My daughter is 22 months and doesn’t say any words at all. But she yells, babbles, points, understands small commands, shows emotion, looks at me when I call her name but won’t speak. Not even mama or dada. We had a speech evaluation when she was 18months old and they said she didn’t qualify because she did other things to communicate. We have an appointment for an autism evaluation so hopefully we can get some answers and help. It’s very frustrating sometimes. She’ll grab our hand and walk us to what she wants or will yell and point until we give her what she wants. Thank you for sharing your video. It makes me feel a little better that maybe she’s just a late talker and delayed.

My son does not point but he does direct. For instance, he will give me his cup when he wants a drink and he will say "drink" or when he is hungry he will say "eat" or he may direct me to the fridge or pantry and look at the area that he wants. The only thing that wracks my brain is he sings every nursery rhyme there is and he has that type of memory where he can hear something for the first time and he will have it down that first time. On a scale of 1-5 he is probably a 2 when responding to his name. He ignores us often. He also does the hand flapping when he is excited, angry, or stimming. He used to be pretty reserved and still is to am extent. He does engage with kids and play with kids but when he's had enough interaction he will parallel play. We just did some hooked on phonics animal cards and he was doing ok with those and would look at my lips and try his best to copy me but he would get flustered and eventually got tired of it and stopped. He actually recently got tubes in his ears. Since then his vocab has flourished. I did notice that he strayed away from sayIng momma and daddy for a while. He is saying it here and there but never to make direct communication. He always sings amongst himself too. Honestly. My house is over freaking stimulating. Like my house is so loud and it's even too much for me. I have to wear ear plugs to keep me from freaking out. I have MS and have lots of lesions and this all new to me too with the over stimulation. My brain is inflamed so when certain nerves connected to certain moods and feelings get inflamed, that's when I essentially get moody.

Very interesting. My oldest son only started speaking when he was 3,5 years old. Up til them he knew less than 10 words. Also had very little understanding of language. But he WAS pointing.. He was at 3,5 diagnosed with speech delay, although they never found the cause of it. By the time he turned 7 he had caught up with his peers, and is now a thriving 9 year old. Between the age of 3,5 and 8,5 he had extra help in kindergarden and school. Luckily that plus the evaluations is covered by the government where we live, otherwise we would never have been able to afford it all. (Norway)

My son is 21 months old and has a few symptoms I’m going to get him checked, but one thing I wanted to ask was about the pointing. My son will gesture towards things but he doesn’t actually point with his finger it’s his whole hand. Is that just a thing with him or is it something weird?

I have a 2 year 5 months old Boy Toddler. He doesn't react when called by his name, doesn't speak yet but says a few alphabets and shapes. He now tends to punch his cheeks whenever he's frustrated or is it tantrums I should say. He's really talkative but on his on words. My wife and I are seriously worried and sad for him 😥

My son is 3 yrs old. At his 2yr appointment he was referred to a speech pathologist but all she told me was to bring him back if his speech didn't improve in 6 months. 6 months later I did return and she just said he does have a speech delay but they couldn't do anything for him because he is above average. It made me a little upset. I do what I can here at home. Now he is 3 and he still isn't saying complete words.

@@Sarahst374 Hello my daughter is turning 3 in a couple of weeks now and thank God she is now communicating, talking, singing and dancing. She loves to watch cocomelon and kiddie japanese videos from youtube. We’re not japanese and we’re from Australia so I’m worried she might learn more japanese than english as she was starting to speak japanese as well lol. But I guess all children are different and could start talking in different times. 😊

i'm a first time mommy and they told me to take my daughter to health delvopment. she is 1 year and she does not listen to me when I talk to he and makes a wierd eyecontact. The pediatritiin said it might be autism i don't know what to do to help her since she is ignoring me when I talk to her and making the eyes side to side

she hears me because ever low sound she turns where the sound is reproduce. Now she hasn't made the eye contact anymore just doesn't turn around when I say her name, she walks holding herself, she makes eye contact but i also think it could be I don't teach her name is Isabelle I call her different names and at the daycare she does listen they say

I suggest you speak with your baby's pediatrician for advice and mension your concerns. It's too early to tell, but looks like the lady who posted this video, Mary Barbera, has help on her website for ages 1 and up. I think it's a free online workshop. Check out her website. Remember, God made your baby, so pray for His guidance in what to do. And if your baby does have developmental problems He'll help you find a proper help. Trust Him. What helped my children is speach therapy, and occupational therapy. Also, staying calm, playing interactive games and snuggling. When you put an interesting object next to your eyes and call your baby she might be more interested to make eye contact. Also, pick one toy at a time and do some simple action with the toy. In/out or up/down. Or hide her favorite toy under the blanket and then look for it using fun voice and face expression. Once the toy's found put it next to your eyes! That always helps encourage eye contact.

What about speech delay with aggressive behavior towards children? My grandson 4 is speech delayed, but in kindergarten hes acting out towards other children. Pushing, pinching, having meltdowns in class to the point he has to be removed from class? He's signed up for speech therapy, but showing significant social delays. Doesn't respond to calling his name at times. Gets upset with others when he can't get what he wants aross to us. Very worried. He actually is shoving other kids down also. He actually hurt one child on the playground. Has night terrors too. No repeat behavior, such as hand flapping or anything. But his behavior has just recently went off the chart. He wasn't acting this way until about a month ago. But he has had alot of stress going on. The parents moving around alot, mom going back to work, and currently not home much . Doesn't care for step dad much either. So emotionally he's on a roller coaster. Has been since he was born. He pretty much wants to stay with me all the time now. I guess he associates my home with stability. Just worried about him. And his little brother. Little brother is showing the same signs at 1. Aggressive behavior, screaming, biting.

if there is a sudden behavior change, the parents should be consulted and collaborated with and support systems put in place to prevent the behaviors.

My daughter understands basically everything, points, she plays with a lot of toys, gets bored of them quickly tho, but doesnt do imitation play. She is 21 months old now, but we also live abroad.. at home we speak a different language than what they speak in the kindergarten, our pediatrician says this can easily cause a 6 months delay in speaking. My wife is worried that she has autism and we are losing time. We contacted a specialist in toddler speaking/behavior and she said to wait until 24months and then if she still doesnt talk then we can start sessions. She is babbling a lot, can say mama and papa, but nothing else that we understand. She points and gestures so good that we can understand what she wants 90% of the times. There are some random words, made up by her that she uses for kind of everything. Says “nado” and points at her feet, trousers, shoes, teeth, t shirt, nappy, animals.. anything.. i really have no idea what to do, sit and wait until she is 24 feels like we are failing as parents, but on the other hand she is a happy little girl and has no issues at all in the kindergarten, or explaining herself at home with gestures.. she is super shy so I dont want to force on her a speech therapy that might not even be necessary, so why risk her getting stressed..

I have been stressed out for the last few weeks since my lo is 23 months old and doesn't talk at all but she seems to understand everything pretty much all of our conversation and responds accordingly. This video comforts me a little to know that there are no obvious signs, I will wait for few more months to see if she will start talking. I just had a disturbing chat with my son's speech and language therapist this afternoon. I'm so saddened, my heart is heavy but coming across your video is a source of comfort because I told his dad same thing " about over coming any difficulty with hard work from us" he's not diagnosed with Autism, we are yet to see the specialist doctor. He's 2:7 months with few words and a couple of sentences but throws a lot of tantrums and crys a lot. Doesn't join in play at play school, plays with only child. He points at things that he wants, he can count to 20, he can read alphabet but not all, he knows primary colours, he know shapes like : diamond,oval,circle, square,triangle and rectangle. He recognises his name ( written). He know his family by our names.

Asanma he sounds a lot like my little boy! Try not to worry too much. Knowing the alphabet and colors is a great start and good signs that he will be fine with therapy. My boy is 4 now, has speech, occupational, and ABA therapy. Has a playgroup twice a week at a special needs school and even helps a little girl in the group to learn to walk. I know it is sad and overwhelming at times knowing and accepting your child is different and there will be a whole different way of parenting them, but the more you learn, the easier it gets. I promise :) Take care!

My 27-month boy is not responding to his name but has usual eye contact. He is pretty much joyful when playing balls or doing other works at home. Don’t like responding to other babies otherwise his sister. He can recite or imitate abcd poem or 1,,2,3 as time and again whenever seen them in wall. For example, when he sees eggs he say “egg”. But does not repeat it if I ask him to. I urge your advice in this regard.

My son just turn 3 and he’s speech is delay too but he understands what I say like asking ‘’ you want food ‘’ he’s excited and run go to kitchen,he only say yes one time then he forgot .. he loves toddler learning videos such as Alphabet he knows each letter even I wrote it down on the paper he say it right, he also know numbers from 1 to 10 and backward 10 to 1. He does counting every time on the stairs, he does pointing too only when he wants something to grab and saying besss it means please. He learned a lot on the youtube phonics song ,but I’m confused when someone asking him or tried to talked to him he doesn’t respond them, but he’s responding to me or his dad . He’s a playful child and friendly but he doesn’t talk too much, I have no problem with his appetite he ate good every day.. my one problem is he’s walking on his tip toe. Some people say that’s sign of autism.. I’m worried. do you think my child is autism?

Thank you so much for this helpful information. I have a 5 year old son and has a difficulty in communication. I feel like what he's saying is scripted. The things he watched on TV or cellphone. He is not fond of talking with us.. He just talks to us if he needs something. As a mother I feel so sad and stressful about his condition.

It can be challenging. The only way to know if it is autism is to get a full evaluation.

But at the same time preparing for it.. the KZbin videos of learning ABCs iv been playing to him an he goes into deep intrest with them. Do you recommend playing them or him? Will they help bring out his speech?
