Hello Mary, I have a client who bites whenever they are excited (happy or angry). They refuse to use items given to bite. What else can I coach parent to do? I just gave her task to give sensory toy and say, "Instead of biting hug your panda". Any other ideas, please? Thanks so much for your videos. They have been very insightful and I use it for my clients and their caregivers whenever applicable. My fave is the shoebox method. :)

My son is 16. Hits himself in the head and throws things, destroying the room. He is nonverbal and generally happy. Little things set him off though. The doctor wants to try a low dose of sertraline. Can you tell me your opinion? Anxiety disorder runs in the family and I can tell he is anxious from body language. He is on CBD oil for epilepsy but I don’t think it helps with anxiety on him. I am reluctant to try the sertraline but his QOL is suffering. Any opinions?

I did a video on how I would not eliminate screen time as it can be very useful however it is best when screen time is used as a reinforcer. Perhaps share my free video workshop with her : bit.ly/2ELvSnM Also google mary barbera screen time for more info on the topic.

@marybarbera4 жыл бұрын
That is hard! It is best to work and think about if you were given 1000 dollars to prevent the behavior, what would you have to do? You may need to start there while you teach skills that can help him tolerate denials etc.

Hi Dr Merry, my daughter 6yrs has autism n conversational stage. At the moment she struggles a lot with one behaviour issue i-e leaving her friends n coming home either it’s hometime or even play dates. She struggles n cries. I had to reinforce a lot wat already planned but she still can’t take it. Kindly give any tips for that. Thanx🙌
@marybarbera5 жыл бұрын
It is tough for me to give tips on individual children. Generally problem behavior means demands are too high and reinforcement is too low.

This kid has autism and is only 3.5 yrs old. He is not my kid but he is a family member. Today his dad yelled at him for crying and screaming, "baby baby" as his 1 yr old nephew was leaving. Then he reprimanded again for taking one of my mom's objects and putting it out of its place. And then he yelled at him for falling down and told him to pay attention. Everyone tells me not to meddle into it, but it's not only my right, it's also my responsibility to help the kid as much as I can. Sometimes I say things lightly. Like today the 1 yr old was hitting people with a fly killer (or whatever it's called) and I took it away. And I said that's all you need to do with 0 to 5 yr olds to 7 yr olds, take away the object they are hitting with. What else can I do to help the 3.5 yr old?
@vanessabayardo97884 жыл бұрын
OMG. They just got home from Costco. And the 3.5 yr old came crying, only God knows what happened over there. And his dad started telling at him, saying, "Nothing is happening to you". The 3.5 yr old only likes hugs from my mom and sometimes from me. His dad will even say, "Don't hug him. I just reprimanded him". I am so tire of him denying the situation with his kid, and of how he has no patience with him.

Without knowing the child it is hard to say but it sounds like you may be right that stepping in would be helpful. As always, local authorities are there to protect children and if you are concerned could be reported.

How would you recommend preventing criminal activities in a 16yr old just diagnosed with asd nothing I do or say is stopping grounding him he climbs out of the window. It’s petty stuff at the present but he sees no wrong I have threatened police I just can’t see him learning until he is arrested 😢
@marybarbera4 жыл бұрын
I would seek out a BCBA in your area and remember to try to prevent problem behavior rather than react to it
@TheShellie284 жыл бұрын
Mary Barbera - Turn Autism Around thank you for replying I’m doing everything in my power to stop it he’s so strong willed though he doesn’t seem to be afraid of the police coming he’s had preventive therapy two years ago as his anger was uncontrollable but thanks so so much I’ll get into finding your recommendations now 😊

You mentioned "Do they sleep through the night in their own bed?" Could you pls briefly state why one should be looking out for that? Thank u
@marybarbera5 жыл бұрын
You do not need to look for it however it is common that lots of kids do not and it can be a big disturbance for families that is often overlooked. So always good to ask families about it.

What if the child is totally capable but has figured out that those behaviors get him out of non preferred activities?
@marybarbera5 жыл бұрын
That is great you have figured out the function of behavior! I talk all about behavior functions and what to do in my workshops and course. marybarbera.com/workshops . In general when a child is escaping it means demands are too high and reinforcement is too low. Maybe upping the reinforcement! Without meeting the child I cannot give specific advice.

Fix the Constipation and you will fix all behaviors.
@marybarbera4 жыл бұрын
So true that constipation can be a factor in many kids, but as with everything, not all kids!
@mikeyb65904 жыл бұрын
Mary Barbera - Turn Autism Around Not true. Constipation is the major factor. Best way to explain is it might be a Candida overgrowth which is a major problem in this population also There’s other GI problems like acid reflex. GI problems are stopping these kids having Successfully bowel movements. I can flip any behavior around in 60 days. Order to do this you need a good diet with high fiber. Get some test done on the GI for my son yeast was the major factor. And Plenty of car rides so I can relax the nervous system and get my child Bowel to Function normally. I got so good at this you can till me the behavior and I can point out what wrong with child for example biting most likely Constipation with a anal Fisher. Head banging that is from a headache 🤕 from being constipated. This PowerPoint will explain how I did it.drive.google.com/file/d/0B8tlfn0ONCZLTEZ6SUtaaUREb2s/view
