The way Nick said, "Oh there's a 'them' now?", that cut kinda deep. I love this movie so much. The message is handled well, Judy and Nick make a great team and have great comedic timing, and Mr. Big and the DMV sloths are two of my favorite scenes in anything.

Nick's reaction was completely understandable given the way he'd been stereotyped ever since he was a kid and this scene pretty well setup Judy's feeling guilty for her part in the ensuing panic directed towards predators in Zootopia

It's a great example of how "diversity and inclusion" should be done in movies CORRECTLY! What sucks is that Disney went away from this, and went entirely to subverting great works of art that had already been created, and transforming them, for the sake of "The Message." This movie, at least, was great, because it was original. If only Disney had stuck to that formula...

It acutally makes sense for different animals to need different tazers (though specifically saying fox instead of medium sized has implications). Unlike humans which are pretty close, Zootopia is full of mammels with much greater variety in size. What would down an fox would kill a mouse. What would down a mouse wouldn't be felt by a fox.

It's interesting to see different reactors' take on Chief Bogo's handling of Judy when she first arrives. Some say it's the prejudice showing in not wanting a bunny cop do anything of importance, others that it makes sense and that she can't expect a top notch assignment her first day but must work her way up and earn trust like in any profession. I personally lean towards the latter. Just goes to show that we have different starting points when judging a situation.

Looking into this movie, it actually had a much darker origin. The predators were more like second class citizens and had to wear shock collars that would shock them any time they felt any emotion. There was also a coming of age party where predators would get their shock collar. The popsicle scene is basically the same. I'd recommend checking it out... The storyboards and some limited animations are out there. Personally, I saw it in a 3 part set of videos where the dude set up the storyline in order. I honestly wish we had interdimensional cable where we could get that movie as well as this one. Or watch movies that never got made like the Nic Cage Superman.

This is a great movie. There’s an anime called Beastars that has the same basic idea, though they separate herbivores and carnivores instead of predators and prey. However, it’s very dark and mature. Both pieces take on the same issues, but take very different approaches. Zootopia is optimistic, while Beastars is pessimistic. A line from each that I think exemplifies the themes in each is “in Zootopia, anyone can be anything.” -Zootopia. And “You can’t get strong with just idealism. The world isn’t that easy.” -Beastars.

Ya know there are many amazing and memorable Disney quotes from Disney animated movies ex: "Do you trust me?","Hakuna Matata", "Keep Moving Forward", "Ohana means family", "To Infinity and Beyond" etc. But out of all of Disney's many animated movies with it's many quotable moments the one that i relate to 1000% is Nick Wilde simply saying "Never let them see that they get to you." That quote alone spoke to me more then any other Disney movie quote ever had before because not only did it make me feel so much for Nick but i honestly know how he feels when he said that. I like to think I'm a pretty mentally strong person. I try not to let people ruin my mood or bother me and if i do get hurt i usually just brush it off but what most don't know is that stuff does hurt me. I do get hurt just like any other person but I'm just very good at hiding it from people. It's like Nick said "never let them see that they get to you." That line hits so hard for me and always will.

Pretty much any large institution that must deal with hundreds (even thousands) of people on potentially complicated matters will suffer from this, the DMV just happens to be one of the most well-known examples, due to drivers' licenses being necessary as an (unofficial) "government ID". Even something as polished and efficient as the checkout lanes in a grocery store can suffer major snarls if something unexpected (but not unusual) happens. Say, maybe an item doesn't scan at the register (malformed barcode, no barcode, etc) -- there's no "problem" per se but the method to resolve it can potentially eat up a lot of time.

My daughter and I just re-watched this film last night! I was just as delightful as the first time we watched it, in the theaters! Great, fun Disney film and I loved all the Progressive-messaging. It was idealistic in showing previously bad-guys, such as the mean Fox at the beginning, end up being nice and apologetic for his past actions. Where that might not always happen, it least they showed it was something that could happen and you shouldn't lose faith in people because they behaved immaturely, at an earlier age. Or, the Mayor, the Lion, was shown in a bad light but that didn't mean he was behind the conspiracy to frame predators, it was the "sweetie" lamb-lady! So, don't judge a book by its cover! Really good film!

The news anchor is a different species of animal depending on the region the movie is released in; obviously in Australia he is a Koala (I guess it was either that or a wallaby :p ). There's a bit of a "blink and you miss it" clue earlier on that Bellweather is the bad guy: when theyre looking at the traffic cams in her "office", they show her coffee mug, and in the same shot her telephone is also visible, with a post-it note attached to it with "Doug" and a phone number written on it. Of course we dont know about Doug until later, but one could conceivably still remember the post-it from earlier and piece it together

Development for this movie was apparently a nightmare. They had written the script, recorded the voice lines, and started animating some of the scenes before they decided to rework the whole movie from the ground up. The story originally followed Nick trying to achieve his dream of being a theme park owner in a world already prejudiced against predators.

Yeah there are some rough animations around on youtube I believe, taken from I guess Blu-Ray extras(?). Originally all predators had to wear shock-collars that would give them an electric shock whenever they felt _any_ strong emotions. The theme park was where the predators could briefly experience life without said collars. It was an interesting idea, but probably just a bit too dark for a family film (and IIRC why they shelved that idea).

One of the things Lassiter was known for was his willingness to NOT double down on a bad scene or even a whole script. If he thought it wouldn't work, he would pull the plug and re-work it, or even cancel the project (which is why we never got the Jurassic movie teased in those bootlegged DVDs Weazleton was selling). The original script was really dark (probably not a bad story idea - but definitely NOT a Disney film for KIDS). I'm glad they did the re-work, because it gave us a _superior_ movie.

Zootopia was called Zootropolis in most of Europe because of the name being trademarked in one of the countries, Germany I think, and just kept it consistent throughout Europe. Why Australia has that name I don't know... Maybe some details changed for one region to another kind of like the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut thing in Demolition Man, and Australia got the European version.

It’s bizarre because it was released in theatres here in Aus as Zootopia. I originally thought Zootropolis was some kind of short based in the same universe.

the reason why the parents said fox taser is because a fox is a bunny's main predator. which for tasers makes sense if you think about it cuz if its zap is only strong enough for a fox and not like a tiger or lion for example then it most likely wouldn't do the trick.

A zoo in Givskud (denmark) actually owns the name Zootopia in europe. That’s the reason for changing the name into Zootropolis or Zoomania.

0:36 Hey Mary, Another reason why this film is titled "Zootropolis" in other parts of the world(Incliding Australia) is because there's a theme park somewhere in europe that's named "Zootopia"

Great to see how much you enjoyed this movie, Mary. I love their complex and nuanced presentation of prejudice and discrimination, and how easy it can be to slip into it. Judy's disastrous press conference was due to a lot of factors, I think. Between her inexperience and her desire not to sound stupid, it was just too tempting to speculate about the cause of the "savage epidemic" rather than just say, "No one knows yet." Although the worst factor was probably her lingering negative bias against foxes and, by extension, predators in general. As you said, her parents' frequent talk about 'dangerous predators' probably didn't help, but I think something else contributed largely to Judy's prejudice. I teach at an English conversation school, and a few years ago I led my more advanced adult students through passages from an ESL reader on culture. One chapter dealt with the subject of prejudice and stereotypes, and it noted that our attitudes and views towards people groups are often formed by initial or highly memorable encounters with members of those groups. Initial ideas shaped by these impressions tend to be difficult for us to shake off, and make it easy to forget that members of groups are all individuals, and not carbon copies of each other. After reading this chapter together, I guided my students through viewing clips of "Zootopia", since I considered it an example of this phenomenon. Even though Judy tried to shrug off her (admittedly violent) encounter with Gideon Grey, and she knew intellectually that 'foxes aren't all like that', it seems the experience haunted her more than she wanted to acknowledge. Confronting the results of her own narrow-mindedness, hearing Gideon's apology and reconciling with him were all necessary steps in correcting her bias, and in becoming a better cop and a better person.
