Interesting facts, In the Original Greek Mythology: - Hercules (or Heracles in the original Greek) was the bastard son of Zeus and a Mortal Woman (Zeus did that kind of thing a lot). - When he grew up, Hera drove him mad, made him kill his family (which a punishment worthy of those terrible divine punisher the furies) and got him to serve his jerk cousin. - Compared to the rest of the Gods, Hades is pretty chill. - Heracles was set to do ten tasks (it was upped to twelve on technicalities). Among these was kill the Nemean Lion (he strangled it to death), Capturing the Eurythian Boar (his Cousin leapt into a huge jar with fright), Slaying the Hydra (he added it's venom to his arrows) and bringing the Girdle of Hippolyta to his cousin (she fell for him, they slept together, but Hera pulled shenanigans and Hippolyta got killed in the process). - He casually wrestled the god of death (Thanatos) to the ground between labours. No biggie. - There's a shocking amount of murder in his life. - He besieged a lot of cities for what their Kings did to him (like cheating him out of getting paid to clean stables). - When he took a slave from a captured city, his wife got jealous and smeared a tunic with the blood a tricky centaur who had kidnapped her had gifted her after he'd been shot with one of Heracles' poisoned arrow. In agony, Heracles threw himself into a fire - and became a god. - He also defended the gods from a load of Giants, who were the children of the Earth.

Said wife was only told that the tunic would keep him from leaving her. It was a final screw you from one of Herakles' enemies. Also, the person you referred to as a slave was technically supposed to be a wife that he was supposed to get married to in exchange for helping her father out, but this was another one of those cases where he besieged a city because he had been cheated...in the meantime he had a few extra adventures during one of which he met and married the aforementioned jealous wife, but that wasn't going to stop him from going back for the wife that he was owed for previous work.

Interesting facts: Disney originally planned to premiere Hercules at Pynx Hill in Athens, Greece, but the Greek government declined. Apparently Greek critics panned the movie for its inaccuracies and creative liberties. The art direction and character design was done by English cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, most people nowadays know him as the animation director for “Pink Floyd’s The Wall”. If you look at his sketches of the Hercules characters, they REALLY do look like something from The Wall. “Go the Distance” was nominated for an Oscar, but lost to “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic. Other songs nominated were “Miss Misery” from Good Will Hunting, “How Do I Live” from Con Air, and “Journey to the Past” from Anastasia. This was the last Disney Renaissance film Alan Menken composed the music for.

The fates in this movie are actually based on 2 Greek myths: the actual Fates, who cut the threads of human souls when their time is up. And the Phorcides, who share a single eye and tooth between them.

@@foxsolid That's not something I remember from the tv show or the Hades game. (One google check later.) Well that's because Hera did a spell/curse/or whatever. He went to Hades to go get them back. Something something 12 labors, etc.

Not sure if you caught it, but not only did Hercules set his mortal parents up for life during the Zero to Hero sequence, but he reuinites with then during the A Star is Born Segment, at the ending! No matter how desperately he wanted to go to Olympus, he never forgot the parents who raised him!

Quick synopsis of the Greek myth around Hercules (aka Heracles): Hercules is a demi-god. Son of Zeus and a mortal woman named Alcmene. Hera, Zeus' wife (and older sister Greek mythology is weird) is angry by Zeus cheating on her and vows revenge on the child. Alcmene in an attempt to make peace with Hera names her child Heracles but the most popular spelling is Hercules, which means (Hera's glory or Glory of Hera). Hercules grows super strong and does some great deeds. He marries Megara (aka Meg from this movie) and they have I think three children with her. Hera drives Hercules into an insane rage, which results in him killing his wife and children. As penance for the killing of his family Hercules is given 12 impossible labors which he must complete. He does and in completing these labors he becomes the most famous of the Greek heroes.

I have a strange connection to this movie. My old doctor (who is now retired) had a brother who was a movie producer and was invited to go to the premiere for this movie. Their father went with him and at one point convinced Jennifer Aniston (who was dating Tate Donovan, the actor voicing adult Hercules) to dance with him. I got to hear the story when I noticed a picture in the office of Jennifer Aniston and his Dad posing for a pic :)

It's pretty much since this movie that Hades is always depicted as a bad guy. In actual Greek mythology he's neither good nor bad (and he's way less bad than some of the other gods) but since he rules over the realm of the dead, people tend to think he's bad. He's actually a pretty fair god that mostly minds his business. Zeus on the other hand is petty and not faithful at all and Hera was not a good mom. Hades mostly does his job as ruler of the underworld and that's it.

If I had a nickel for every time Danny DeVito played a version of a character popularized by Burgess Meredith, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
