Death by Bunjie

This one has a doozie of a shot in it, at least by Death by Bunjie standards. Is the start of something new? What does this mean for the future of Bunjie? Food for thought between this video and next week's video, wrapping up the 2020 Crossbow Season.

This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!
Bunjie is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels--you name it!--with the "stock" 20" Easton Firebolt arrows, Bunjie experimented with heavy arrows during 2020 but has since decided to hunt with 20" ProFlight arrows from Easton, for a total arrow weight of just under 400 grains when tipped with a 100 grain Rage Crossbow Hypodermic Broadhead. This keeps old Bunjie around 300fps.
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. She also shoots ProFlights (16.5" variety) with a 150 grain Rage Trypan Crossbow Broadhead, for a total arrow weight around 415 grains.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester .30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
All Hail Bunjie!

This is a very good and interesting story. Hunters in general are very particular about equipment and the choices we make with what equipment we use. None of us are real big at taking chances when the moment of truth presents itself. Just let that equipment fail once when we need it and that may be the last time we ever use it. In that spirit, it may be difficult to try different or modern technology without the intimate hands on experience. Sometimes when we try things while still using reasonable sense we can make important discoveries. That’s truly a great gift and all about growth and evolution. All hail Bunjie!

Rich. Great video!! Great shot too. I have struggled with the limb width in crossbows starting with my Equinox and even now with my Micro 335. Sadly two weeks ago the limb on the Micro split while hanging from the wall. I heard it go while I was watching TV. She wasn’t cocked or dry fired and that was that. I called Excalibur and they are excellent folks but as luck would have it, they were out of limbs and wouldn’t be able to get me a set delivered for about another month. So I had to get another bow as I was dead in the middle of the rut. I bought a new TenPoint. I love how narrow it is. Something like 8” wide AtoA when it’s cocked. So now I have two bows. Each with its pros and cons. I do like the narrow limbs and extra speed. I took two does pretty easy.

Rich, Excalibur should sponsor you for sticking with their crossbows all these years, that's a great advert right there. Maybe you should persue that avenue. It's the least they can do. I have the swat xp and it's amazing I can only shoot targets here as its illeagle to use a crossbow in Scotland for hunting. But I love going to my property and setting up my range and shooting at different ranges. My max distance is 40yrds shooting as when I come over to the US I will NOT be shooting anything further than that. I have seen people shooting targets at 100yrds and my crossbow could probably do that but I don't see the point. If I want to shoot at a 100yrds I will use my rifle.

I hit my buck right where you drilled yours. I was 17' in a tree stand it was quartering toward me. Hit the the top left lung. Complete pass through... 40 yards on the dot with a micro 335 shooting black eagle arrows with 150 gr boltcutters. Destroyed the tip of the bolt cutter. However I don't know if it was ruined from bone or where it buried in the ground. The buck ran 550 yards before piling up. Very little blood with the shot so high. The buck scored 152" my second pope and young in 2 years. The stand is 25 yards from my house. The next day my buddies wife shot a 125" whitetail and thanksgiving morning I watch my buddy arrow a 130"... All farm the same stand

I once shot a buck behind me, left handed, with the rifle sideways across my right arm/shoulder and the stock firmly in the crook of my left elbow. (My back was really hurting me that year and I could hardly get out of my chair without putting the gun down first. ) Luckily the buck was only forty yards away and giving his full attention to rubbing a tree. His antlers adorn my wall now.

Hahahahaaa! Shot a deer hanging out the window of the blind! Hahahaaa. With my luck the blind would have tipped over. It's good to show off now and then. Makes the kids think Dad's smarter than he looks and can do magic. My kids still think Dad can FIX anything. I once stopped my car from overheating with a stick of Wrigley's gum at 2AM one rainy night. The car was overheating and I noticed the radiator fan wasn't turning on. Well, I didn't have any tools with me and only service station for miles was closed. The teenager in charge at this Mobil station said the shop was locked up and he didn't have access to any tools or even a piece of wire. So I asked him if he had any Wrigley's chewing gum. Wrigley's gum has a tinfoil wrapper. (It's the only stick gum now that doesn't use a paper wrapper.) "You hungry?" he asked. "No", I said "I'm going to fix my car with it." He followed me out to the car saying, "You're going to fix an overheating car with a stick of gum??! This I gotta see!" The gum I ate, but the tinfoil wrapper allowed me to short the radiator fan sensor leads to hotwire the fan on. The fan kicked on, running continuously, and the car cooled down. My daughter thinks the plot for MacGyver came from my exploits. I might have had something to do with her believing that.

That’s a great memory for you both. It just might be a sign to retire Senior for a smaller faster bow. You owe your sport, deer and viewers of your show to have the correct equipment. I’m not saying your a bow seller or you bow the star 🌟 can’t continue as is. It just might a sine from above (Fred Bear). Lol I enjoyed the post as always. That was a great shot!!! 40 yards (in the RAIN HALF OUT A WINDOW) with a crossbow I’m impressed!
@teamcrooks6913
@teamcrooks6913 3 жыл бұрын
Gotta disagree respectfully with you, Daniel Vrana. There is no "correct equipment" as long as the bow meets the legal requirements. Longbows, recurves, compounds, crossbows all have their limitations. Know the limitations of your chosen bow and work within them. Also note that, by far, most deer jump the string. At 40 yards that may mean that your shot hits a foot high when the deer ducks (and usually spins!)! Maybe make some great videos showing the ethical side of hunting by NOT taking questionable shots in the dark. It's not as if your survival depends on it. DbB got lucky with this one, and I applaud his luck. Remember, whenever you loose an arrow at a living creature, you owe it to that creature to make a clean, quick kill. One of three things is going to happen, and two of them are bad. Be sure (as you can be) of your shot. IMNSHO. Hunt safely, my Friends!
