The Caterpillar was obviously telling you by its head movements; no no no you ain't going to mess with me. Thanks again for the great example of food choices to us hikers. I see so many of the young ones eating high sugar and high simple carbohydrate diets that it worries me for their future health. Our long time family friend who is a nurse told me that she has now so many patients in their 30's and 40's with diseases of those normally in their 50's and 60's it scares her. Your videos may save someone from a future of health trials.

Thank you so much Scott! I certainly try my best out here. I have to admit though I do have to have some ‘junk’ food’ every now and then just to get the calories in but mostly I’m doing well.

@@MarysOutdoorAdventures No need to fret about caloric intake because for many it is just a number. You are eating NUTRIENT DENSE calories and they trump large EMPTY calories. Control your blood sugar and continue your excellent food choices and let your hunger dictate your intake and you will have lots of energy. Don't worry about your weight, all the bike and marathon winners are efficiently thin.

I wished more thru-hikers would eat their greens on trail! 👍🏻 One thing I do find with vegan diet is that you are more "conscientious" about what to eat on trail because protein is sourced from plants, non-dairy and non-animal. When I lack greens...my body totally feels it...and I am not a vegan, but love greens, tofu and grains. Your vids always make my day brighter, Mary "Sunshine!" Happy trails! 🌺

Thank you so much, I’ll certainly try my best out here as you are right, if I don’t eat nutritious food my body feels it. A lot of people can get away with eating junk but it makes me feel awful so I do what I can☺️

Cheerful Mary always smiling except at the end when you were eating ! First time that I've seen you when you weren't smiling. Contemplating the food, no doubt ! Looked good, exactly like what I'd like to eat on the trail. Maybe a little fresh broccoli and some apples (heavy fresh fruit but I'd eat them the first day) or peaches ? I miss fresh veggies and fruit (dried or freeze dried is a good substitute) when long distant hiking. The little bit of junk food you eat won't damage your health in any way. You'll burn off those calories first and quickly. Can't wait to see what interesting plant, bug, or animal you come across next. You should be seeing some deer in the Sierra. Hike On. Good Luck.

Hi Mary! I'm enjoying seeing your videos - your voice is so calming and grounding. I came by to tell you that you can actually eat the yucca blossoms raw or cooked. They are the national flower of my El Salvador! :) My grandmother would eat it with eggs and tortillas. You can also eat the stalk in stews (they're starchy like potato) steamed or fried with a pickled dish similar to sauerkraut called curtido.

Web Worms - When we lived in NH, the trees would get those all over them. The worms inside would eat the leaves and slowly kill the tree. You have the same metal cup and lid that I do and I also have the same collapsible cup. Those crackers looked good. I'm not a vegetarian. I like to eat meat! So you are losing weight. Mary, MaNishma girl! I live in Montana USA and just love your PCT videos and I have been catching up with your trip from the very first video you posted here. I grew up in Ridgecrest Ca. ( Walkers Pass) area and never got to hike the trail and have actually picked a couple of thru hikers years ago at Walkers Pass. I love your attitude and how you "do it" out in Gods great Creation. I have also been following another gals hike Kayla Tingstad-??? I think is her name. She ran into several Rattle Snakes up in Oregon south of Crater Lake. Be careful! Question tho, I have never heard anyone talking about eating Bananas of carrying a Snake bite Kit.... How come????? Shalom ,. Cheyenne

The long stretch of trail (about 150 miles or more) through the San Bernardino National Forest and Los Angeles National Forest makes almost no north or south progress as the mountain ranges stretch east to west with Cajon Pass being the approximate midpoint (and low point) between the two.

Hope I'm not giving away too much info here, but that's deep creek down slope from the trail. The various climates in the region tend to be isolated from adjacent climates just a few miles away north or south. To the south is the cool, forested area of lake Arrowhead. To the north is the high desert (flat) of Apple Valley, Hesperia and Victorville. The communities to the north are accessible by leaving trail via the Mojave Dam. They are also accessible by bus from Wrightwood further "northbound" (in actuality further west). Hesperia (nearest) has lots of outdoor supply stores, WalMarts, Target, etc. and an ok bus system.

Caterpillar must be spreading silk thread back n forth. Looks to be the most inefficient nest I’ve seen. It’s almost like it can’t see. I have yet to see a toad or the Yellow Legged Toad that is protected. Must be cool there this year on trail. In Alaska lately we’re cooking. 89f yesterday and things are drying up like a desert.

Mary Mansfield hike the Sierra Nevadas with a group is a must with all that snow, and please scout above and below river crossings, slow and steady wins the race as they would say and go with my motto “live to hike another day” save my butt many times solo backpacking in Grand Tenton and Great Basin National Parks on really isolated hiking trails. No shame in backing out...PCT is heavily trafficked with many trail angels 👼 so use it! 🍻

@djg5950

I think that they are all ahead of her. Kate Cloud met and passed Second Chance before or just after Big Bear Lake so a long time ago. She is in Oregon now. Cory Chance has skipped the Sierra and jumped up to Oregon, too. He just interviewed Kids Menu (but his videos are delayed by at least a month) so I think KM is ahead of her, too. Not sure where SC and KM met. These hikers started before Mary and except for Cory (if he hadn't jumped ahead she may have passed him, too, because she is doing, some days, twice the amount of mileage as him). Mary stated above that she decided to do the Sierra Nevada so she will stay well behind these guys for now. She may pass SC but it'll take a while. She will sooner or later for sure if she completes the whole trail by early fall.
