Panda Express crispy beef my favorite looks just like it

I tried this recipe and it is so so so good 😋. My meat eater husband said: "This is better than meat" 💥. I made a lot of saitan in my life with different recipes, but this one is the best: it is crispy, spicy, soft in the middle and not rubbery at all... perfect.
@PMoore-dz7zz6 жыл бұрын
I have to thank you...You are the ONLY person I've seen that talks about that wheatie flavor in the VWG. Everyone else that cooks with it never mentions it and act as though they're good with it. And they may very well be. Me being a heavy meat eater, who loved meat so much, I didn't care if I didn't have sides to go with it, needed that taste to be gone or I was heading back to the butcher. Okay that was an overdramatic statement. Sorry. But I was tired of that taste of wheat. I had stumbled across your Channel a couple of months ago and heard you mention using apple cider vinegar to cut that aftertaste and I fell in love ever since LOL! So I'm thanking you for mentioning this as a solution. I'm not gluten intolerant so now I can eat as much as I want and make all these fabulous dishes and still love the taste.
@marystestkitchen6 жыл бұрын
You're most welcome! I noticed the same thing too. It led me to wonder if maybe there is a wheaty-tasting gene that some people have...like how some people say cilantro tastes like soap
@Kitty-Cat6 жыл бұрын
That's a good theory! I always figured that the brand I bought was bad somehow...
@a-roh50396 жыл бұрын
I think you're onto something there. Science backs up the claim that some people are "super tasters", cilantro as you mentioned, as well as bell peppers and some other vegetables are usual culprits. I would not be surprised if wheat was included. I'm so glad you found a method that works to make your seitan palatable!!
@PMoore-dz7zz6 жыл бұрын
Mary's Test Kitchen // Vegan Cooking I know right? My friend hates Cilantro. Well, you have helped me a lot. I was going to ask in another one of your video posts, would any kind of vinegar help, like the Balsamic, Malt, White, or even Red Wine Vinegar. So, I see Balsamic here, which answers that question 😊. I'm enjoying making your recipes. I have three KZbinrs I really follow close. I'm determined to stay meatless😊. Have a good day!
@peachymanaangel6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s so wheaty! The wheat taste takes me out of “hum meaty” into “nope bread”. I have noticed many people try to cover it with lots of spices but sometimes I really miss the comfort and nostalgia of roast beef with salt pepper and garlic.

Mary, I recommend your channel to everybody. I've tried several of your recipes so far with excellent results. This one is my favorite to date, and your tip for adding either balsamic vinegar or apple cider vinegar to the seitan to cut the wheat flavor is brilliant. I do that now for every seitan recipe I make, and it works in every instance. Thank you very much for providing such wonderful, tasty content to your viewers. Even my kids, who weren't all that enthusiastic about transitioning to a plant-based diet, love all of your recipes I've made thus far.

I'm glad that the vegans on here have been giving ideas on how to veganize meat dishes, for example, Yovana Mendoza has made vegan beef patties out of black beans which are cheap here in Australia (80 cents per can). My local vegan restaurant (Vegan hut) offers a portobello mushroom burger for $12 AUD but I could stay at home & make the burgers that Yovana has made for less money. McDonalds doesn't have a Vegan option over here apart from if you order a coffee with soy milk added.

This is so different from what I thought ginger beef was! To be fair, I've never eaten it myself (because I'm vegan, duh), but I've heard my family rave about it so much, that I decided to try to make my own version of it years ago. Background first: This ginger beef was eaten in Chinese street stalls in Malaysia, so it might never have had anything to do with Calgary ginger beef. Anyway, mine is also seitan, but not battered or deep fried. I boil it in strips and then fry them in a tiny bit of oil. The sauce is sort of similar, but instead of chili I use white pepper, and I add sesame oil. The most different part, besides the batter, is that there is no sugar in mine. Well maybe a tiny bit because I use part soy sauce and part ketjap manis. In any case, my family loves my recipe, but I still have no idea if it's anything similar to the one they're used to. Maybe I'll make them two batches (yours and mine) one day, and they can tell me which one is more like the one they're obsessed with. I don't frankly care anymore what the original is like, because I like mine a lot, and it's one of the few dishes I make that has no chili :D
@marystestkitchen6 жыл бұрын

OMG...I learnt that Calgary is the home of this recipe! Soooooo interesting. I used to enjoy the very best on 7th Av and 5th street, there’s a fantastic Chinese restaurant there (Cant remember the name!) that would adjust and make it with deep fried tofu for me. This is my favourite of all non traditional “Chinese” dishes, I lived in Calgary for 17 year working in the entertainment industry and working as a Vegan chef at Community Natural Foods in the day time. Now, through providence, I live in Australia. Thank you so much for this whip of of a recipe share. It looks exactly spot on, serious Calgary vibes here, nostalgic inducing and try this asap! 🔥 Would you show us how to make a chared ho-fun? ❤️❤️❤️❤️
