I am proud telling, that I have been in Karate training camp on 90's , where mr. Tanaka was invited to teach. I can remember, that he was very humble and did not talk too much. But very strong , and his kiai shout was a loud grunt. One of The most valuable teachings was then, when I was a beginner, that "when you are doing the oi-tsuki, just do it straight from the hips forward." He then showed eating an apple, and said: "when you eat an apple, you dont make a circles around with the apple" . He said all this to everybody, not only me, of course.

I had the honor and privilege to meet Sensei Tanaka. Must been 88,89. He came to our school in Santa Rosa.Love his kneeling front snap kick. He showed us how your KIA!!! Is a weapon in itself. I’ve used it a few times. And let’s not forget his front leg front snap kick. Lands it at will.

I'm amazed at how they turn their back to their opponent as soon as they know or think they scored a point, I hope no one gets used to that so much that they pull it out on a street fight, because they'd get destroyed.
@GosokuRyuYodan3 жыл бұрын
That's because you don't understand kumite. Scoring a point is not the same as the hit that the point represents. Read Nakayama's book on Kumite. Karateka are trained to control their technique. This translates, loosely, to "put it where you want it." If the opponent was truly hit with that technique, turning your back wouldn't matter. The opponent would be down. These people train for hours on makiwara, and have fists like bricks.
@DreanPetruza3 жыл бұрын
I certainly do not understand point fighting. But all the makiwara and bricks you want, it's all still unproven hypothesis. On the other hand, proven techniques as MMA, Boxing, Muay Thai, Bare knuckle boxing, do hit hard and don't kill or maim their opponent on one punch, thus you always should stay aware of the situation, even you won't follow up with more attacks, turning your back to your opponent if they're not unconcsious on the floor would be unadviced by most martial artists and combat disciplines practitioners.
@DreanPetruza3 жыл бұрын
I certainly do understand what Kyokushin and daido juku call kumite, and they don't run away from their opponents after scoring a punch to the air.
@andpinto13 жыл бұрын
You are right, and as an attitude I don't like it, even if it is just a game. However, in real, free sparring, that you only do in the dojo or graduation exams, rest assured that no one is turning their backs. Anything goes and it doesn't stop once you score. There is no score, just the ability to give and take.
