Alexa, I was taught Swiss French and I've noticed that it's easier to understand your French because you speak each word clearly. I was taught to speak French by my foster parents starting at age 3 or 4, I was not adopted by them hence the Spanish name ( I don't speak Spanish). I've also noticed that I can read your writing. Reading French has always been easier for me. I do understand the words but nobody in my city speaks French but I still remember how to read and understand it and even speak it and I'm 60. You are the first French speaker on KZbin I understand. I was put in a French class in high school but I didn't understand the teacher, she was Cuban and was married to a Canadian husband. That teacher called my foster mother and told her I didn't want to learn but I kept telling the teacher that I didn't understand her because it was a different French than the one I was taught at home. I'll continue learning here on KZbin with you because you make it easy and yes, I do speak fluent English. Thank You, Merci Madam Alexa

I used to try to use the rules but, other than a few easy ones (like -tion, or -ment) I long ago figured out the best method is to simply memorize them with an article in the first place. So, according to Alexa I did the good things.

@@paulfaulkner6299 La plupart oui il me semble. On ne peut pas se fier à cette règle car baucoup trop de mots y échappent. Tous les mots se terminant en AGE et ayant un seul syllabe ne sont pas tous féminins. Par exemple on dit: -Un/Une age (a beam) -Un âge (an age) -Un nuage (a cloud) -Un/Une Sage (a wise) Parfois les mots "SAGE" et "AGE" sont aussi masculins tandis que d'autres fois non.

@aikunhuang44183 жыл бұрын
The literal translation for a. is “She is pretty as a heart”, and I believe its equivalent in english is “She is pretty as a picture”. It’s when you find the person beautiful. And the second one means “to be put upon”, it’s when someone takes advantage of somebody else, literally “he is walking on someone’s feet”. For example, I could say “Ne te laisse pas marcher sur les pieds” to my friend which means that they shouldn’t let people walk all over them. Hope you understand ^ - ^

I wonder how important it is to get masc/fem right. If there are not 2 words with different meanings (i.e. un hiver and une hiver) then there is no risk of being misunderstood, only sounding a bit rubbish. So my strategy is to use the correct gender if I know it, but otherwise just have guess and keep talking - the listener will indicate if there is some confusion. I think the traditional focus on getting this 100% right puts English speakers off trying to learn and use French.
