And now I understand the importance of those lessons. It gives me a strong base to explore more into French learning. Basically, "en" refers to quantity , replacing "de & du", "des" would be plural, while "y" refers to singularity.. And "en" is also used as "in" beside a feminine noun.. Like "Il est en classe" (he's in class), the noun is class and it's also feminine or "Je suis né en France" (I was born in France).. Here is an example with both prepositions in it, "Je suis né en France, mais je n'y suis pas né" (I was born in France, but I wasn't born there).. In case someone out there is wondering, "On y va" looks to be different from the rule but in reality is not. Because as you may know, "va" comes from the verb "aller" (to go) and it requires à to present an indirect object. For example, you cannot say "Je vais l'école" you have to say "Je vais à l'école". Thus why in the case of On y va, "y" is replacing à+endroit(place). Hope this helps!

At 2:40 into this video, Alexa demonstrated use of "y" in the responding sentence "Ils y habitent depuis 1 an." But I think the technically correct response would be "Ils y habitaient depuis 1 an", using the imperfect (imparfait) tense. However, using the present tense "habitent" keeps it simpler for beginners.
