Masdevallia ignea - A Repotting That Turned Into a Rescue

It seems I was just discussing taking orchids out of pot only to find no roots!

Firstly Roger congratulations on the 10k well deserved, secondly using moss is the best way for a massie to establish roots it’s a proven method, may I suggest when you decide to give it a trickle of water you add a little into the tray and let it wick up rather than the new growths at the top getting wet which without roots may rot, turn yellow and die back. Once again 🎊 🎉 🎈.

I have a few rescue orchids Roger with no roots. I looked at one a couple of days ago with nice green leaves & to my horror a brown clump of dead root broke off. Back to square one....? I need to do a pic to show u . The orchids were given to me in v poor condition & I have no idea what type they are!!

Masdevallias are tricky for sure. I keep my Masdevallias in seramis. After few attempts of growing them in bark/perlite mix and sphagnum which were not so successful I decided to switch to other media. For my conditions, seramis is the best option. It is suppose to provide good aeration, adequate amount of humidity around the roots and due to evaporation its cool the root zone as well. They are doing well (even in the summer time) and flower quite regularly. At least as long as the pot sits in the water. However I grow them on the windowsills, but maybe it could be helpful somehow

That’s about right for ignea, it will always climb out of the pot, when it feels like it. Contrary to popular belief Masdevallias don’t like to keep their feet too wet, and when they go down they go down like a lead balloon. They do however, quite quickly recover when you change their conditions. It is truly galling as we spend a lot of time and effort on keeping them happy and others can grow them under a tree in the garden and end up with specimen plants. I think we worry too much sometimes. It will come back fighting I am sure but,personally, once it,does I,would not keep it 8n sphagnum,

The sphagnum is just to get some roots going. After that, I'm going to try a more 'terrestrial' mix with some added peat. (I remember the one at our show - in the same pot for years and grown outside a lot of the time.)

Big congrats on the 10k - that came up quick!! How exciting! You’ve done an amazing job to get here and I know you’ve certainly provided me with lots of valuable information - and entertainment too! I always look forward to your videos. I’m sure the next 10k will come very quickly! The method you used always works well for me to recover roots whatever the orchid type. Keep us posted on the Ignea - I’m sure it will pick up with the cooler temps now.

There are some warmth-tolerant Masdevallias but finding out which ones is not easy especially once you get into the hybrids.

So the question becomes, why did the roots fail? Temperature? Wrong medium? Watering too often/not often enough? Tough to sort it out, hopefully it will come back now that you're heading into the cooler part of the year. I've decided that, without a dedicated chiller (read: wine fridge), most Masdevallias are not suitable for growing here, even in the house. I just lost another Oncidium nobile because it is just too warm here. Now, that one, I may invest in a wine fridge for and get another plant.

The sunny days now only take the growroom up to around 25C and the nights are always below 18C. Soon, I may have to get the heater out!
