I hope they make it too! I still haven't got around to repotting so they've been sat upstairs for a week. I'm telling myself I'm waiting for them to adjust... 😂 I don't like putting new organic potted ones next to my others, who knows what's hiding in the media 😅

What a bunch of cuties. When their blooms come it will look wonderful. And being that a lot of them if not all of them are fragrant will be quite nice as well. I am not sure at this time if I am a masdevallia orchid person. Maybe later but that being said they are lovely blooms. You did very well on this haul. Waiting with you to see all the blooms. Great video and you will do really well with these. Have a very great day/evening.

Hi Annabel! Hope you're well! Just watching this video for third times , since recently I got a masevelia that still alive after repoting! How yours are doing? Have they bloomed for you yet?

I bought a Masdevallia herradurae with burgundy/purple/dark red coloured flowers with a lovely fragrance (it is described as coconutty but can't remember 😅) in the fall. It does well for me in a cooler room facing east (bought two and the other, a hybrid, found it too hot and lost its leaves...) Happy growing!

Hello Annabelle. I've been watching a bunch of videos and learning a lot.I noticed that you put holes through both spots in your self-watering pots I think that's a good idea and I will try it that would certainly make watering easier

Always worth a try, you might hit on a solution that makes life a bit easier and the orchids happier! Sometimes the things I try are a bit risky, but I'm happy to mess up and learn from it 🙂

Hi Annabel, a lovely selection of plants and your orchid room is going to smell divine with all those fragrances 😊. I've just got my first ever Masdevallia and it's a barlaeana so I'm hoping I can keep it alive with my ever growing collection of different orchid types lol. A bit of advice please... Would you say these don't want any direct sun on their leaves at all so they need proper full shade or is a bit of diffused sunlight ok on them for a while? Many thanks and good luck with your lovely new orchids 😊.
@TheOrchidRoom
@TheOrchidRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Barlaeana is pretty cold growing, I have a Barlaeana x Veitchiana, it's an easy growing cross at least. Masdevallia lose water very easily through their leaves, and also burn easily, so you don't want the leaves heating up at all. Cloud forests would be bright shade, they probably never see direct hot sun in nature. That said, they will do better under good light which is why they are well suited to growing under LEDs rather than sunlight, which can heat the leaves. So for windowsill growing I'd say you want bright shade, no direct afternoon sun heating the leaves. A bit of morning sun may be ok, but not if it gets too hot. As I grow mine under LEDs I can't advise too much from experience but I'd say wherever you position it, if any sun is hitting then feel the leaves. If they feel too warm then move out of the sun 🙂 But probably better to position somewhere where they get indirect, but bright-ish light, if possible 🙂

@@TheOrchidRoom Thank you very much Annabel 😊. That's great information and I will definitely keep an eye on the leaf temperature as a guide. It's getting harder to judge as the sun is getting higher as the weeks go on so I'm having to watch the positions of my various orchids like a hawk lol. What might be great today, might be in full sun further down the line 😩. I think I might have a couple of spikes coming up as this one is blooming size apparently (I hope they're spikes lol) so I really hope I can keep it healthy and it will thrive in my care 😊.

Thanks! My others are doing very well so I'm fairly confident these will also 🙂 The coccinea is the only one I'm more hesitant on, because Dracula don't do as well for me as Masdies, and I think the coccinea would probably like it cooler.

I'll live vicarously through you with the masdies...Don't dare to grow them as of yet, I live in southern France, summers can get pretty hot here...and i'm still learning my basics in orchid growing. The coccinea one looks amazing though. Hope all spikes will bloom! also loved the clay pot, looks super cute! might try that some day.

They're quite intimidating, it's difficult to know how they'll do until you get one, but getting one and risking it dying isn't appealing either 😅 They definitely grow warmer for me than they should in summer, and they make it, but we don't have very long summers. Sometimes I get some leaf yellowing by the end of summer, like they're trying to tell me they've had enough already. But they usually put out more leaves in autumn and spring again. Maybe worth trying one of the warmer tolerant ones like the guttulata, if you do decide to take the plunge. My barleana x veitchiana hybrid is funnily enough the most vigorous one I own so far. So maybe that's also a bit more warm tolerant although it's parents are actually supposed to be some of the more cold growing species... 🤷‍♀️

@@TheOrchidRoom I'm thinking I will try the Guttulata once I feel more confident in my growing abilities with the plain ole phals! Most of those without spikes are beginning to grow roots, I'm excited, must be i'm doing something right...Thanks for your videos ;)

I know some people in Australia who converted wine chillers to orchidariums 😉 Must be a pretty expensive project though! I think I'm right on the border of being able to grow them, they do well in my winters and springs and slowly stall in my summers. By the end of last summer I was getting some leaf yellowing, then they perked up in winter... At least you have some nice warm weather to enjoy 🙂
