These days, when people want a meal out, they’re either going to grab something quick at a fast food restaurant or spend some serious money and time at a fancy restaurant. The once-famous in-between of casual dining is not as popular as it used to be, and there are a lot of restaurant chains that might be closing down soon. Many have tried to reach out to younger diners, but their attempts have not gone over too well, and their sales have continued to decline. Let’s take a look at some beloved restaurant chains that may sadly be closing soon.

Went to Ohio with my boyfriend for his h.s. reunion. Went only to Frisch's Big Boy (like Shoney's'it's Ok, but too expensive in the mall) and Bob Evans. Like Bob Evans since they don't have one in Ga. Like it far better than Denny's-which I hate. We still have Buffalo Wild Wings and Ruby Tues.

I don't know why these restaurants are so shocked. They blame more people cooking? No. People are cooking more at home because your food sucks Between 2000 and 2010 the quality of food in all these restaurants dropped significantly. While prices continued to rise. It was noticed. And not appreciated. The only thing that's changed between 2010 and 2018 is the fact that Americans have realized that the cost to their wallet, their time, their health, and their pallet isn't worth it. They've also wised up to the fact that the food is NEVER as good as it looks on TV. Restaurants that are doing well right now have acknowledged all of this.

Maybe it's because these chains have menus that are decided in corporate boardrooms with produce that's as cheap as they think they can get away with and selling meals as expensive as they think they can get away with. There's no love, no passion and people are starting to see right through it and are either staying at home or eating at independent places where they can get better value for money. It's the same here in the UK, chain restaurants are closing up left, right and centre because on the whole most of them are over priced and poor quality. And don't get me started on the celebrity endorsed chains.

When our food was *finally* served, my mother's baked potato came out lukewarm. Fortunately, she got a hot baked potato, but she requested that it be taken off of the receipt. It got taken off by th e manager (who was more competent than our server). She also had me take a picture of it, in case they did something stupid with her card, or if the server tried to make her pay for that sad-ass potato. We're not going back there for a while.

The one group tipping doesn't hurt is servers, where a typical TGIFridays server should expect to gross tips + wages of $15-$20/hour. Its the cooks and dishwashers who get hurt the most by tipping.

Everything is getting too expensive, and the quality of everything is going down. And if the quality of the food hasn't changed the portion size has. And that goes for everything out there, i remember when a family size bag of doritos would be huge and last a week. Now the family size is what the regular size used to be. Traffic is more misrable to travel in, gas prices are thru the roof. Then you get to the spot you want to eat. You may have to wait 20 minnuts or more just for a table. Most of the time you don't get good service, then you have to wonder if anybody in the back added some secret ingredient, and the atmosphere feels rushed and not relaxed like id did years ago. Then you feel bad because you have to leave a tip for the lousy food and service as if you didn't spend enough cash. Learning to cook at home is the way to go these days.

@@cheesesteakphilly Chicken Wings is basically very easy to make, its just that it's also messy to prepare lol. You will see a lot more people cooking Steak at home because it's mostly seasoning that you put on the meat, and preparation is usually time related such as marination or tenderizing process. But full dishes that requires you to prep multi-part process is what keeps people to go to a restaurant. For instance you can't get the same tasting curry in some places, and some foods are best cooked in earthenware or other appliances or tools that the common user won't have. Basically, if you don't have a big kitchen or have it decked out with cookery, you might not cook at home often. Also: Chicken wings are bland because most of the time they are cooked bland and have seasoning applied to them. Try soaking them in salt water overnight or in a marinade before cooking and you'll get far better chicken wings. Restaurants don't have the time to do tenderizing or marinating processes sometimes. ESPECIALLY Chain restaurants. Oh you know those Mcdonald's herb and garlic fries they sell? It's just regular fries with herb and garlic powder and some olive oil dripped on it. LOL.

There used to be a time when you didn't really get constant jokes and complaints about those fast casual restaurants' quality because at one point they actually took more time with the food. The more they started cutting corners with the quality, over the years, the more you started hearing the complaints and jokes about the quality of those restaurants. More likely that access to KZbin has allowed people how to learn to cook at home rather than an actual trend to home cooking. Still most of these chains are going out of business due to leveraged risk. Basically, too many managers trying to manage for stockholders rather than focus on the core business.

These CEOs do not understand shit about running things right. These places are going under, not because they need a name change, not because they need bigger menus, it’s because of the price to value. Most of these places have low quality for a price that people just are not willing to pay. It is that simple. But no yea, I’m sure it’s all because people don’t like the restaurant name.

I was in a Chili’s not long ago. Most of the wait staff was hateful college students. They were pushing customers in and out as fast as they could. If you took the slightest pause while eating, they would try to take your plate. I overheard some of the staff complaining their tip was not enough. It is becoming very common, in the restaurants I go to, the waiters taking your plate before you finished.

I love how these Ceos just look at the numbers... like "oh well we're down 12 percent, we gotta fire someone". What they completely lack is knowing who their clientele is and also knowing that alot of these restaurants were a part of a trend that is dieing because quite frankly stagnation in wages has not made it affordable for people to go out to dinner for two and blow 60-80 bucks including tip. Hell I went to Ruby Tuesday with my mom, meal wiht tip 65 bucks. Quite frankly when I go grocery shopping for myself I can spend 80 and get by for two weeks. I probably go out to one of these restaurants once maybe twice a year and alot of millenials like myself do the same or never go. These restaurants rely on the 45 and older crowd and that crowd is slowly dieing out along with your customer base. Any young people with kids are staying home and cooking now because they can save alot more. It used to be you could go to dinner because it was just what we did every weekend. Now going to a shtty chain restaurant is turning into more like a luxury than something that used to be normal, and that just tells you the state of the economy when 50 percent of the country is making less than 30k a year. 165 million people who can't afford to go out to eat 3-4 times a month. That will hurt a bottom line.

Restaurant chains aren't run by chefs, but by accountants and marketers. Not a single one of them has any appreciation for food, or any concern what customers really want. They think that a drop in sales means they need a new marketing campaign and maybe rebranding, even all it really means is that people are tired of their substandard food, prepared and served by underpaid wage-slaves.

Steve Winter It’s whatever the consumer thinks and that is completely okay. But a place like Ruby Tuesday’s has tried to give seasonal deals. Like last summer where there were free refills on their 6 flavored lemonades. Also the endless salad bar side which constantly makes additions or cuts every season. While eating out is clearly more expensive than a grocery bill it can’t be denied that these restaurants are attempting to keep people.

Straight up - many of these chain restaurants compete with each other by just copying each other's menus. Nearly everything comes in plastic and gets microwaved or fried, and a plate of that crap winds up costing you more than you can make for yourself fresh at home (and in greater quantities). Moreover, because the menus are all over the place, the restaurants wind up having no identity. Just a bunch of sad, aging decor with no food of particular note.

Exactly! On the very rare occasions that I've gone to IHOP for lunch, I have tried their burgers and they taste, quite frankly, meh. Not terrible but not great either. Since most people go to IHOP for breakfast, the restaurant should include a FEW 'breakfast' type burgers (e.g. burgers with waffles instead of buns or burgers topped with an egg) on their menu. "Beloved" 1) Too expensive. They charge a 500% mark up for what you can buy yourself. 2) Shitty quality. Frozen foods and majority of their dishes asre deep fried and/or slather in cheese. Not to mention their food is something I can whip up in 30 minutes. I'd get more portions for the same price, and hone in on my culinary skills as well. 3) TOO EXPENSIVE! Our generation are realizing this insane mark up and would rather spend time learning how to cook. I personally cook for my big family rather than going out to eat. There are 20 of us (Adults, nieces, nephews), an entree costs about $15-$20 after tax. That is $300-$400 in the span of an hour-and-a-half. For that money I could feed them all 3 entrees each. Maybe these restaurants deserve to die down, because people are realizing the costs to eat there.

When all you see is private equity firms buying these things, you know there is a problem. The general process is a leveraged buyout, which leaves the operating company with even more debt to service, while paying out both the previous owners and a nice fee to the equity firm for managing the deal. Give it a few years, and most of those companies will die under the weight of extra debt, and those who don't will be sold on, for ANOTHER fee, to someone else. The truth is also that, with rare exceptions, restaurants are short run business models. Chains stores have a longer lifespan, mostly because money losing startup locations are often supported by others in the chain. But in the long run, restaurants go out of fashion and die off on a regular basis, and without reinvestment and re-imagining the concepts, they will die.

Not to mention inside, you either have a long wait before sitting down, or once you sit down, the service is horrible. The food quality is bad too. And you are expected to tip well in this day and age no matter what. I'm not sure what happened in the restaurant industry..it used to be about quality service and quality food, thats what sold it instead of eating at home..but now they are hiring managers that just don't give a shit about customers. Speaking of customers, those became assholes too. There was a time you left the scream crying kids at home during the evening and went out for a date, but now that everything is "family friendly" you are stuck with crying screaming kids whos parents don't seem to care about, or "service/comfort" animals now being all the rage at Restaurants. Sorry, but the only real reason to go out to these places is to maybe meet someone for the first time in a public place, thats it. It's not just changing food preferences. The average constant dollar discretionary income per family has not increased for many years. A lot of people just fail to understand that most families are not seeing a net increase in discretionary income even with an improving economy. Eating out is still not going to the expensive places for many families. Ask yourself why we still have $1.00 menus. Restaurants don't use that unless the economy isn't working well for many families.

David Hoffman-You made excellent points! McDonald’s does really well with $1 menu items. It is bad if you eat there often. Some will want to correct me, If you eat there at all. But, this is the problem created with underpaying people. Approximately 50 percent of all employed people, in the U.S., are earning $30,000 or less per year. (AGI.) So, they make choices like McDonald’s. They go to Taco Bell. They do much less to casual dining chain restaurants. And this is especially so for millenials. They don’t have the incomes. Or they can’t be loose with their incomes as some can.

When I was growing up in the 60s and early 70s, most restaurants were family businesses that served fresh food that tasted so much better than what you find now. These restaurant chains ruined the business IMO. I hope these closings will mean the return of how it was 50 years ago. Time will tell.

Who said anything about "more fast food"? Why is it that whenever restaurants are mentioned, so many people instantly think "fast food"? I don't know where you live but in my city, there are many family restaurants, many of them have been open for many years, and new ones - mostly Asian but not exclusively - open all the time. Yes not all of them succeed but that doesn't seem to discourage the families willing to open one. And we're not just talking burger and pizza joints; we're talking family restaurants so I will respectfully disagree with you that "nobody wants to chance" opening a family restaurant because they "almost never work out".

And because of that, these restaurants are sure to go the way of Toys R Us, Bon Ton, and a bunch of other formerly big name franchises which bit the dust. These private equity firs have a business model of saddling these acquired companies with tons of debt, having these companies pay special dividends to the firm before paying out other expenses, making serious cuts to staff and sometimes even merchandise, and leaving nothing for these companies to position themselves to compete with their rivals.

With BWW, it’s a restaurant based on wings. However, you shouldn’t have to go to papa johns to get better wings. The chicken itself at BWW is not very tasty and it’s very dry. They rely solely on their sauces which aren’t even all that great. Also the ranch... it is the most grocery store tasting ranch I have ever had at a restaurant. Why not make it from scratch and have it taste like jets pizza ranch. Also you need to offer a spicy ranch. Listen to us millennials. If you don’t, you’ll go under faster than you’ll know.

People still like Chik-fil-a. Why? It is usually run by mature adult managers and is staffed by clean looking folks where you don't have to worry about your food. I won't go further into demographics. Also, the trend to eat out is still growing. However, Home buyers still want the biggest kitchens with plenty of nice cabinets, recessed lighting, sound systems, stainless steel top-of-the-line appliances topped off by a gas gourmet range, wall ovens, gleaming wood floors, and granite counters galore.....but it seems most just want to display their kitchens rather than use them.

I worked at Ruby Tuesdays and the way they operated was awful. The biggest problem with chains like these is that they forget that they're cheap casual restaurants with cooks in the back taking stuff out of the freezer and tossing it onto the stove or fryer, not actual high end restaurants with actual chefs. Trying to act like you're more then that is just absurd when they in reality they should just go back to more humble roots.
