A new decade is upon us, and while the 2010s have been a decade of new tastes, flavors, and trends towards plant-based diets, there is still room for fast food and big chain restaurants with huge serving portions.
However, there isn't room for all of them. Some of these beloved restaurant chains are going to have to go, because the fact of the matter is there is only so much room available in the market during these times of changing diets and tastes.
So, which of your beloved restaurants are on the chopping block? Here are some beloved restaurant chains we might sadly lose in 2020.

I only knew about half of the restaurants on your list due to them being local chains. Of the other half, I guess it would be Friendly's if I had to pick one. Although I thought they had gone under eons ago. The one in Cincinnati I was familiar with closed in the 80's and I hadn't heard from them since. Great sundaes. Thank God UDF came to Cincinnati and filled that gap and did it better. I only like Ruby Tuesday's because they have a salad bar. Those are getting harder and harder to find, even if RT's is kind of lame. Lame is better than nothing.

“If we don’t take care of our customers somebody else will.” - Edgar Mitchell I believe that the majority of these franchises that are going out of business is not necessarily because of the prices or quality of the food. I think it’s the poor service. Management is filled with idiots. Corporate believes that laying off workers and keeping staff at a minimum is the way to make money.

KingRyan Yeah, increasing wages will devalue currency, but I suppose that FED repo buyouts and 1.8 trillion dollar helicopter money for big banks over the last three months, along with a president pressuring the FED to lower interest rates to zero won’t. You noticed the price of food going up?
@gmccord1970
@gmccord1970 4 жыл бұрын
KingRyan Yes I have ran a business and I never said increasing the minimum-wage. I am saying that employers these days rarely take care of their workers because the social contract between employer and employee is virtually gone. Customer service these days is extremely horrible not just in the food service industry but other industries as well it’s basically companies just don’t give a crap. They don’t give a crap because they know that they can make money elsewhere through other ventures. If I conglomerate owns various businesses and if 10 or 20% of those businesses fail they know that the other ventures or investments will make up for it. This is what happens when you have the top 5% of the nations wealthiest companies controlling over 50% of the Nations wealth.

So many Americans don't have the time to cook and when fast food is down the street and let's you feed your family for under $10 or $15 it's hard to rationalize spending double or triple that to go to one of these places. The food isn't healthier, doesn't always taste better, you have to tip and pay more to begin with. Let's see, Ruby Tuesday was started by Sandy Beall as a college bar and restaurant. They were in malls in the 90s and had great food, a fun atmosphere, and breadsticks with honey butter, yummo! Ten years later, out of malls, no longer attracting a young crowd, and they started to go from casual dining to putting ketchup in little metal ramekins and fries in a metal sleeve. They outclassed themselves, and ten years later, are about to go bankrupt. The goto job for teenagers in the 80s was waiting tables in casual dining restaurants; minimum wage was $3.35, and pay for waitstaff started at $2.01 an hour. Within two months I was making $2.10, another six months, $2.55 an hour. My tips averaged between about $80.00 a night for a five to six hour shift. On a Friday or Saturday, talking between $120.00 and $150.00 for five to six hours of work. Today, 2020, servers still make around $2.00 an hour when minimum wage is almost triple what it was in the late 80s. The problem is not the restaurants, it is corporate management desiring high six figure incomes at the cost of good employees. It is the greed that skyrocketed in the 90s due to the success of the 80s. This problem ed exists everywhere.

And there there are certain restaurants that pool tips all together. First job I had was at a local chain restaurant that got new ownership and they decided to pool all the times. My tips were basically my gas money (this is early to mid 2000s) and I went from getting $20 per day (approx) to maybe a couple of dollars if I was lucky. I worked to help get me back into college, so I wasn't rich by a long shot. To this day I still ask waiters at restaurants if they get their own tips and so does the rest of my family too.

@@Zodia195 pooling tips is socialism. I would keep all of my cash tips and only pool my credit tips. I would agree to pool tips if the managers and cooks added their wages/salary earned per shift to the pool each time we pooled tips. That way, all of the employees were treated equally. Like true socialism, the top earner receives much less than they deserve, and the bottom earner receives much more than they deserve. Pooling tips encourages mediocrity, at best. I never worked a restaurant that pooled tips. I was always a high tip earner, so to share that with Schmuckatelli the Server was never going to happen.

@@Kittie28 in 2003, the salad bar was $1.99 added to any meal, then, a year later, $2.49 added to a meal, then $2.99, then $4.99 added to a meal. All within five years. The salad bar started at $4.99, then topped off at $9.99 during the same period. At the time Ruby's minuscule, puny, salad bar was $9.99, Golden Corral's buffet bar was $8.99, during the week, and $9.99 on the weekend. It is like Olive Garden and their soup and salad offering. I remember when Marie Callender was THE place to eat in the 1960's in Southern California. I mean, movie stars ate there. There was really nothing like it, with all the different flavors of pies. At that time, they focused on pies, not on all this other restaurant crap. And the pies were TO DIE FOR. They are still good, but I remember the pies being amazing. And the prices for everything back then was reasonable, with nearly any family able to treat themselves from time to time. I also remember when Red Robin first opened in L.A. It was also the "in" place to go, and you'd see upscale people eating at Red Robin. The burgers were FABULOUS, and again, very reasonably priced for that era. Younger people don't realize how things have changed and gone downhill at these once stellar places. The quality in all these types of chains went downhill, the prices skyrocketed (there's no burger on earth that's worth $15), and people had more choices. I was surprised to know that Marie Callender was down to only 20 stores nationwide. There's no excuse for that, they were an amazing chain and brand, as was Red Robin. They could have competed if they'd kept the quality up. Burgers today in most places SUCK!

Chains tend to start out as independently owned restaurants that specialize in local cuisine, then bloom across the region where those dishes are most popular. Some get big enough to go national, but for the most part chains tend to stay where they know they will appeal to customers' tastes. I remember when I was a young Missouri kid and visited my dad in Houston. There were Chik-fil-A's everywhere, and I had no idea what that was at the time. The whole notion of not knowing that place seems funny now.

@bobscafidi9184
@bobscafidi9184 4 жыл бұрын
Why?
@ChakatNightspark
@ChakatNightspark 4 жыл бұрын
@@bobscafidi9184 well lets see. This is gonna be Long Post. Walmart hurts local communities, Many people are aware that when Walmart comes to town, the company drives out smaller mom-and-pop businesses, but what not everybody realizes is that the presence of Walmart actually does little to bolster the economy of local communities in the long run either. The company uses foreign labor, including child workers. been estimated that over 50 percent of Walmart goods come from overseas suppliers. This doesn’t just take away American jobs in favor of cutting costs; it also creates a living hell for those forced to meet Walmart’s hefty supply needs. The corporation has been accused of paying off officials in foreign companies in order to keep many of the details silent, but various stories paint a gruesome picture. A great example of this is Bangladesh, where the minimum wage for garment industry workers is just $37 a month. The conditions in the facilities where these products are made are incredibly unsafe. A 2012 fire in one factory which made garments for Walmart killed 111 people. Walmart underpays women and neglects pregnant workers. However, Walmart does care about rich people In 2013, the Walton family received $8 billion in tax breaks, $6.2 billion of which came from federal taxpayer subsidies handed to them because employee wages are so low. Currently, the company is also hosting $21.4 billion in offshore accounts, which remain untaxed by the U.S. government. And in 2014, as Walmart failed to meet shareholder expectations, the company somehow managed to dig up enough money to give its CEO a $1.5 million bonus for performing poorly at his job. Walmart isn’t just greedy. The company is the epitome of greed. As its overworked and underpaid employees struggle to make ends meet, Walmart’s top brass make billions, even as stock is dropping. Everything about the company is capitalism at its worst. Walmart’s universal reputation as the “bad guys” stings that much more as the company keeps trying to remind us how good it is. Take their OUR Walmart initiative, which attempts to silence dissenters with positive representations of the company, even as workers flood the Internet with their personal horror stories. Or the Walmart Foundation’s initiative to “fight hunger,” while their own employees go hungry, spending $300 million in taxpayer money on food stamps. Or how about its campaign telling you to “buy American,” even while the company’s new uniforms were made in Jordan. In the last 10 years Walmart has Sued over 1,000+ Former Employees who were spreading the truth about the Horrible working Conditions This is just a friendly reminder that Walmart is terrible. Call it a public service announcement: Don’t shop there. Don’t work there if you can help it. And if you do have to work there, don’t expect to be treated well. Get out while you can, before Walmart takes your spirit, your health, and your dignity. If Walmart’s ugly practices are a cycle of power and abuse, there’s only one way to break it. And that starts with you.

Steak and Shake used to be the burgers I would ask my wife to bring home after work, two single steak burgers, baked beans, and fries. However somewhere along the way they changed the way they make their burgers so I don't like them anymore. Freddies is now my burger of choice because they cook their burgers the way Steak and Shake use to, thin and crispy at the edges. I don't know why restaurants change when they are successful. Take , for example, Red Lobster. Twenty five years ago there would be packed restaurants with people stacked up and waiting to get in at a Red Lobster on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Now Red Lobsters are only half full or less at the best of times. The reason is all the bad changes they have made over the years. The food is lousy compared to what it used to be.

Luby's is one of my mom's fav restaurants, she likes how they do serve veggies there when other places lack them. I've yet to see any Luby's closing in our area (I live near San Antonio, Texas) yet, so hopefully for my mom's sake they'll stay afloat here. If the Red Robins in my area closes, I'd be devastated for sure since that's one of my fav burger and milkshake joints. I prefer it to the Shake Stack because you get more bang for your buck (endless fries and a free refill for your shake).

I even noticed employees on their phines then serve customers without washing hands. The chicken isnt fresh. It usually wks old in the coolwr and never rotated to put older first. The st louis ribs are NOT so called. It steamed ribs covered in boston market bbq and are chewy like rubber. We all know that most of the food is frozen there too but steamed in the plastic bags(chemicals anyone). And the vegetables are NEVER STEAMED but microwaved. I even seen emplotees not wash produce before using. I coulr write a book.

@@courtneyb7194 u could write a book. not only u bring awareness to people but u make profit. but yea so true. I mean there might be some good chiefs like gordon ramsay but overall yea I agree with u. I remember when to this one japanese restaruant. we were there first and they saw it but didn't care. but the 2nd we saw the dude go there he got accepted first. and we had to wait another hour to even be seated and don't get me started how it took 1 hour to get the fish. and my ice cream was like melted. and lots of times I go to tai foods. lots of times I threwed up because its so dirty

Beloved in this case is more to the nostalgia from these restaurants. Many of them have been around for many, many years and countless people visited them during all those years. So I don't think they were meaning "beloved" in a romantic way, more in a nostalgic, reminiscent manner.

All the steak and shakes I’ve been to as of recent years have been awful in terms of customer service. I’m not even upset about the food because you get what you paid for. But the fact that I see about 3 employees working for an entire restaurant is the reason it’s on this list.
