There's a brand I had growing up in NJ: Thumanns. Once you've had a Thumann's beef/pork hot dog in natural casing, you'll never want to eat another brand again. No additives/preservatives/dyes. You get them in a 5 lb package all connected to each other-- just like in the old cartoons! As a kid, my family never ate out. Absolutely never, because we couldn't afford it. Mom's "go to" fast meal was a couple of cans of chili with a package of hotdogs cut up into the chili, served over a slice of bread with chopped onions on top. I usually prefer Nathan's or Hebrew National hot dogs, but the price seemed high for something to chop into canned chili during Covid. Aldi has a pack of 8 hotdogs for 95 cents that are marked "original" that actually taste like 1960's hot dogs. Definitely better than anything I've bought from Oscar Meyer in decafes.

Great review. Regarding lack of taste, my wife and I have noticed recently how ground beef, not uncommonly, has no taste whatsoever e.g. hamburgers grilled outside. That experience has led me to wonder if fillers with no are being mixed into the ground beef. Historically there was a time when things like sawdust or chalk were put into meat to increase profit margin.
@jacksmith-vs4ct Жыл бұрын
unlikely they would be sued into oblivion for putting filler in without it showing up on the label due to the potential for allergies probably try a ground beef with more fat or a better brand though also if you got covid it can mess up your sense of taste for a long time though it does slowly fade.

Ever since "rona" (especially), quality has dramatically dropped. It's not just food either, but that is the one that bothers me the most as it's something we have to consume to live.

I actually ate four of them, two with chili and two with just mustard!! Not the best food I have ever eaten mind you, but I can say that the Hot Dogs Nathan's makes are way better then cheap store hot dogs, and I can understand why they are so popular!! They do have their own "flavor" and their texture is unique to their brand, which is NOT a bad thing!! I would enjoy having a few more Nathan's Hot Dogs, if they had a location near where I live here in New York State, but I am too far away from the city to just drive there for a Hot Dog reasonably!! Their hot dog chili on the other hand is out of this world, and I do have to say a Nathan's Chili Dog is a treat to look forward too....If I ever go back to New York City!! Cooked them all the same in the same skillet in butter with diagonal cuts in them. My favorite was the nathans followed by hebrew and then ball park. BUT they were pretty close. Nathans and hebrew had a little stronger flavor but for the price I think I will stick with the ball parks as the others weren't that much better to me. They were 2 bucks more per pack but not that much better.

Actually, those of us who grew up in MICHIGAN in the 1960's know that not only the real Oscar Mayer wiener is gone, so are all the others. Why? Because Michigan had higher standards for hot dogs than the rest of the country. Only skeletal meat could be used. No lips, udders or other crap. The hot dog manufacturers didn't like this because they had to have two lines, one for Michigan and one for the rest of the country. So they pressured Michigan to change its law and they won. Hot dogs have gone downhill ever since.

I like them both. I don't find beef hot dogs more greasy than pork ones (I'd say the other way around, actually), but I do find pork hot dogs to usually have a more delicate and juicy texture. I prefer pork hot dogs grilled and beef hot dogs steamed/boiled. I find beef hot dogs tend to dry out easier on the grill. (And pork hot dogs are fine steamed/boiled, as well, and extra juicy that way.) Though I'm a Chicagoan and grew up in all-beef hot dog land, my favorite is actually Sahlen's dogs (served at Ted's) from Buffalo, New York. They have a natural casing pork-and-beef hot dog that grills up beautifully. Then there's pork-and-veal hot dogs, which are very nicely light and springy, and usually spiced more delicately. It's all good.

You missed Hofmann's Hot Dogs. They are my favorite. I can only find them at Harris Teeter (owned by Kroger) They are more expensive but have a better flavor then any of these tested.

Vienna Beef all the way. Yes, it is highly regional, but they are available in markets other than the Greater Chicago area.

I’m from Chicago and always ate Vienna beef hot dogs, the best! Just out of curiosity I tried Nathan’s and just hated it after only one bite!
