governments and institutions can imprison one's body, but never the mind, never the spirit of music, liberation, and love that is such an innate part of being alive and human. I feel like this song is a testament to their resistance to all the conformity being imposed in the middle east, great song.
@Confusedramy7 жыл бұрын
well u have a conformity of thinking as well... One's mind can be imprisonned through different means, education and tv just to name a few. Idk if u noticed that but people tend to have the exact same assumptions about stuff and the same opinions which make discussions and debates with them to say the less dull. People,are afraid to question matters that they view as being a norm and the way stuff should be.
@ujiiiiosjwwj4jr Жыл бұрын
@@Confusedramyimo, conformity resulting oppressing institutions is different than a conformity based on exterior influences such as TV etc with the second being better because one still has the right to think whatever way they want

Quiet Knight i think bc the singer is Gay and maybe he had some problems because of the society and other things you know and he just wanted someone to support him so Marwan is a gay person who fought a lot and he wanted Marwan to tell him that everything is going to be OK tomorrow

When you hear a song full of enthusiasm to forget your concern and a sentence comes 'بس بلبس كذبتي' 4:10
@sw4nfire Жыл бұрын
idk who does the english translations and transcribing of their songs (I suspect it might even have been someone from the band because they are super accurate) but the thing that makes this my favorite song that is so subtle isn't transcribed clearly in either the arabic or english translations and you can only hear it when they are singing (it is hard to transcribe) the subtle grammatical and tonal changes in the verse dress me up in smiles joy becomes me "لبسني ضحكتي ما الفرحة بتلبقلي" the first verse in the song uses "ما الفرحة بتلبقلي" and "لبسني ضحكتي " the use of" ما" here implies that there is an assumption of joy becoming the singer, that "joy becomes me? doesnt it?" because there is a third person dressing them up in smiles, its a projection that they are internalizing and doesn't know if it truly becomes them but that is what is assumed of them, in standard arabic ما is also used as a negating word so I also like to think there is a double meaning of joy doesn't become the singer in the second verse it turns into " بس بالبس ضحكتي و الفرحة بتلبقلي" which translates loosely to "and so I wear my smile (but ill just wear my smiles) and joy becomes me" it has a monotone-ness to it now, they had joy and smiles put on them and its what they know how to do the singer repeats again this time with more strength and conviction again trying to convince themselves in the fourth verse the singer sings it more happily with an airy voice more convincingly but in the repetition the sentence "بس بالبس ضحكتي " "but ill just wear my smiles" becomes tired, showing that they are still tired until it ends up with بس بالبس كذبتي Ill just dress up in my lie
@OneRandomLeo10 ай бұрын
thank you for sharing that! I started learning Arabic because of them but these subtleties would totally escape me if it wasn't for people like you telling us about it! Would love to hear more, as I am sure all their lyrics are full of these little twists and implications :)
@sw4nfire9 ай бұрын
@OneRandomLeo im glad! I dont speak lebanese arabic so a lot of the things I notice in the songs could be completely wrong (sometimes I understand a verse a certain way and the english lyrics would have it mean something else and I default to the english meaning because I assume its vetted by the band) but here are just some of the things I love about other songs regardless of if they are intentional or not aoede : -the name of the goddess aoede ايودي kinda sounds like قيودي "qoyodi" (my chains) if they were speaking egyptian arabic it would be pronounced almost exactly the same way -the verse "الكلمات تنفس بس الحياة تنفس" is translated as "if words be breath, and life be breath" in English which limits the breadth of meaning it has in the original arabic the arabic lyrics has a much broader meaning, if I were to translate it, the closer translation would be "words be breath, but life is a struggle/competition(to breath)" but it doesnt flow as well haha so thats why I assume they went with the "if words are breath and life is breath" to keep it open ended and link them together creating a different feel in the english version, a transformation of the arabic lyric, but I am sad people might miss out on how good the arabic lyric is because its brilliant they are using the exact same word for breath here in both lines but depending on how you stress them with harakat (which they write in the arabic lyrics) it immediately changes, in the first verse its tanafas (words are breath/airways/opening) in the second its tanafos (competition/struggle) bint elkhendiq (the trenches daughter) - this one from the perspective of an english speaker only would miss how HEAVILY feminine gendered this song is, the only mention that the singer is speaking to a girl is "and you fear sleeping for years to wake up as your fathers daughter" there is even a line where they omit the gendering on purpose "ride that bike and drive us; we will never look back" what he actually says is "get up sister; drive us so we will never come back" icarus - the line "he took a train and then another, but the melody followed" in arabic he says the english word train twice instead of the arabic word for train but with the lebanese accent it sounds like a guitar strum onomatopoeia so what he is saying is "he took the ♫ trin ♫ and another ♫ trin ♫ and the melody still followed" - the line "what is written on our faces will eventually be realized" is better in arabic its more accurately translated as "what is written on our foreheads, will last be seen by the eyes" -the whispered chorus in the background isnt translated in the english! in the pauses between the lyrics the singer murmurs "wax and feather - tomorrow wasnt like this" tayf - "the mushrooms have started to grow" the word they use for mushroom is actually a phrase ive never heard before and I had to google it "the crows bread" is apparently a way to refer to mushrooms in arabic because the mushroom caps look like bread? Idk what crows have to do with it but another name is also apparently "The crows nest" so maybe they nest there? haha ------ overall the english translations are super good they put a lot of effort into keeping the translations concise and simple and trying to maintain the depth and lacking that they transform or even add extra flair that might not be in the arabic versions, which is why I think their translated by someone in the band
