CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky (Eric Stoltz) gets a physical and Dr. Vinton (Andrew Robinson) hears about Rocky's "lionitis" for the first time.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy.

Terrell Gaskins well it isn’t their fault in anyway. I was born with multiple problems which weren’t in anyway my mothers fault. She did everything humanly possible to make sure I was healthy while she was pregnant with me. Sometimes things just go wrong for no reason at all.

It depends if he's mother or father take drugs or any other while in birth. It does effect your birth. If you want a nice healthy baby don't take drugs or drink. The doctors blame the parent but rocky said it not their fault. I blame the mother. Or god if you wanna blame him for he's mask.

I REALLY adore this scene because doctors like the one in the white coat are unfortunately in the masses where are the doctor in the brown coat, are extremely rare gems. The ones that seem to really care about you as a person, as an individual. The ones that really believe in helping you get better by an means necessary. This movie taught me so much about compassion as a young boy. I watched it every time it came on HBO back in the 80's when I was a kid. Films like this should be shown to kids in school today, it is relevant and can still influence the way kids see the world and other people who might look or act "different". Rest in piece Rocky.

Eric Stoltz is a phenomenal actor
7 жыл бұрын
Not really. There's a reason he was replaced with Fox on BTTF. Because Fox was a better version of the same bit. Stoltz did the movies MJF wouldn't wipe his ass with. Like this dreck with the mask hanging loose 99% of the time. Love that soft contrast. Doesn't scream 80's TV shitpile at all. People love Stoltz now because Tarantino threw him the smack dealer role in Pulp Fiction, but before that he was to MJF what Emilio Estevez was to Charlie Sheen. I wipe my ass with this movie.

Sad thing is he was judged by the way he looked and was bullied because of it. The good news is he ended up becoming friends with almost anyone he met because of his friendly and great attitude towards life. Rocky was intelligent and loved baseball and collected baseball cards. Rocky was able to teach a blind woman how to feel color and understand what color is. He was kind to animals and was also a great tutor to other students. It's a shame this young man had to die young but his story lives on and hope his family is at rest too including his mom who died in real life in a motorcycle accident years later. May they rest in peace. I also have to say, I love old movies and older things. I have an old taste for things at the age of 27. I seen this movie over 20 times at least since I was 7 years old.

I like how they treated Rocky more of a human being in this scene where as when he was in public people stared at him like he was a freak and he wasn't a freak its the people who were the freaks, stupid, and crazy and dumb because they aren't educated and Rocky would sound like an awesome friend to have! Rocky's mom was awesome and she did everything she could to help Rocky, and I like the Bikers and how they protected Rocky too! This movie was a good movie and I loved Cher in this! She played awesome biker chick! I wish I had these people in my life instead I have to deal with ugly people who make fun of me and stare and call me names! I gotten bullied all the time but now its stopped but it still happens once and while! I also like how Rocky went to camp and meet a blind girl named Diana but Diana's parents were mean to Rocky and they felt uneasy when Diana was around him and how he called Diana but her parents wouldn't let Diana speak to Rocky! I know that there are certain people who have a sickness and condition like the Elephant Man John Merrick and how badly he was treated and how he isolated himself from society! Freaks, Special Needs Kids, & Adults, they want to be like everyone else but they aren't so they are easy prey to people!

That one doctor reminds me of so many nowadays. Doesn’t care about who the patient is, only cares about what condition he has and what medication to give him. Last time I went to the doctor for something I was in the room with the doctor for about 10 minutes and 8 minutes of it was then filling out a questionnaire and only 2 minutes actually looking at me and then prescribing a medication, a week later for a bill for $600. I feel it’s the insurance companies that make doctors have to spend more time filling out forms and less time actually getting to know the patients.

Nowadays? It is not just nowadays. In fact, in some ways studies show they've gotten better in recent years due to a stronger focus on bedside manner, and many medical schools insisting people now undergo an interview to see how they speak to people As for questionnaires and forms there are many reasons. Some are for insurance companies, and others are for the government. However, many help your doctor in their diagnosis and treatment plan. They are extremely useful tools that have improved diagnosis and treatment standards, particularly for conditions that are complex, or with symptoms that are more subjective

When I see clips from *_Mask_* all I read in the comments is people talking about how they would have been friends with him and treated him better. What people don't realize is this all took place in the mid-70's and back then society didn't accept people like we do today. Everyone was judged, especially by what you looked like. The world was a completely different place nearly 50 years ago. Had Rocky Dennis been alive today then I believe he would have a completely different life than what he did then.
@scottw6704
@scottw6704 5 ай бұрын
It wasn't...exactly.... like that. Were you around in the 70s? There's some truth to that if you're referring to the older members of society at the time due to how their parents were raised - but the younger folks were incredibly welcoming to folks who were different. This was not too long after 1969...post-Woodstock, the Age of Aquarius, racial boundaries were breaking down right and left, free love, easy drugs... It didn't start getting "me-centered" and shallow/materialistic til the early 80s and the second buildup of the Cold War.

Why does everyone refer to the real situation of Rockey Dennis and his mother as " Fun Facts? " Working in the field of medicine, these might be more accurately be referred to a " real fact", " incidental information" , or " actual fact" , but using using the term, " fun fact", is completely inappropriate and in poor taste, when referring to the actual story of a sufferer of any severe disease or genetic abnormality.
