CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky (Eric Stoltz) arrives for his first day of school and is met with uncomfortable stares and a few mean jokes.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This is the true story of Rocky Dennis (Eric Stoltz), a personable young man suffering from "lionitis," a fatal disease which causes hideous facial disfigurement. The son of freewheeling biker Rusty Dennis (Cher), Rocky is accepted without question by his mom's boyfriends and cycle buddies, but treated with pity, condescension, and disgust by much of the outside world. The local high school principal tries to get Rocky classified as brain-damaged so he won't have to enroll the boy in his school, but Rusty fights for her son's rights with the ferocity of a mother lioness. Rocky makes friends easily both at school and at summer camp. He also falls in love with Diana (Laura Dern), a blind girl who cannot see his deformed countenance and is entranced by the boy's kindness and compassion. Now that he's got his own life in order, Rocky sets about to wean his chronically depressed mother from her drug habit. Mask is the sort of story that might have ending up wallowing in its own pathos had the acting, direction and scriptwriting (by Anna Hamilton Phelan) been anything less than very good. The film proved a much-needed financial success for director Peter Bogdanovich, though unfortunately it didn't come soon enough to stave off his declaring personal bankruptcy.

This was a very inspiring film back in the day with a great cast. It’s a pity people will still refuse to look past the superficial exterior to see the real depth of the person as a whole. Rocky Dennis proved that we are more than just the sum of our parts. He had real friends and family who truly loved the child, the boy and the man he was before his passing. How many of us can say we have those “ real “ friends and not the fair weather kind?

Warsha Warfield was the teacher who also played the baliff in Night Court. This is a fantastic movie. I was 9 when this came out but understood the circumstances and had so much empathy for Rocky. This movie taught me so much about accepting others regardless of their appearance and how it's wrong to bully and make people feel like they don't belong. These are powerful lessons to learn at such a young age.

"Ugly" people, in america, are required to try harder because everyone makes fun of them and nothing is ever handed to them; and thus they grow up to be people who try harder to achieve what they want, and see things as they truly are. "Good looking" people in highschool have everything done for them (there are exceptions to this rule....... VERY VERY rarely) and they grow up with no skills and shit attitudes. rocky had it awful, because no matter how you act, looks are still important, and they still matter. people who say that looks don't matter and that it's how you are on the inside, are liars. your looks and how you act are both important. if you were physically repulsive to members of the opposite sex, it would be extremely difficult for you to attain sex from them, unless you would resort to things like escorts and prostitution. if you sit there and claim that looks are not important, but you know damn well that they are, your actions and the choices that you make would prove that you're full of shit. i have not seen this movie. in fact, i didn't bother to watch this scene. i paused it before it started, but i'm willing to bet that rocky there didn't get himself a woman to have a sexually intimate relationship with. he would need to resort to plastic surgery and a reformation of his head in general to stand any sort of realistic chance with a woman. even if he somehow managed to get himself a sexual relationship with a woman, he would still have to consider the possibly of being able to have a chance with some other woman in case his relationship with the current woman would end somehow.
