Another great video, Daz. Question from a rookie trying to learn. If you have to "break" a root for some reason, Does the end "re-seal" itself and close up the root? Or, does an opening remain? How does root rot occur on a damaged root? Does cutting the root (say with scissors) heal quicker or the same as pulling the root apart? Or is healing the same? Thanks.
@Cactimania2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Bill. Good questions. Yes the roots will heal, it's pretty much impossible for zero damage to occur during repotting no matter how careful you are. Root rot will tend to happen on broken roots with bacteria getting into it, there's more of a chance of that happening if you're potting up into a wet mix, personally I think it's always best to repot into dry substrate. Some people do let the plants air dry for a few days, I have done that myself in the past when I have trimmed roots, but generally I'll pot them straight up. I've not lost a plant yet from root rot after repotting it, touch wood! If you're doing root trimming it's always best to use sharp, and sterilized scissors rather than just pulling the roots off, that'll do more damage to a root than a clean cut will. As an added protection you can also apply cinnamon/sulfur powder to the roots to help them heal and prevent infection getting in. Generally though Haworthia are pretty robust plants and can take a fair bit of abuse. And as always I'll wait at least a week after repotting a plant before giving it any water. Thank you for watching and commenting, have a wonderful day and weekend from Edith & myself 🌵☀🌼🏜

Well woow! let's start with not a bug in sight that I could see ,possible Because all the lovely roots was hiding them not. In my humble opinion the roots are the engine of the plants that we grow And yours looked mighty fine to me. Clearly the existing mix Daz, again in my opinion was very good For this plant,also the care ,watering, feeding, size of pot, position Of plants,and of course the light. I may have reused the same size pot that had the pups Simply because there was room for the pups to still Enjoy a bit more growth. All are doing well I hope in the new mixture, and Again look forward to another update, Thanks again, Bill.

Thanks so much as always 😊 Yep all doing well and some already needing a repot again! I don’t think I’ll use the coco coir again, though. They’ve done well in it but I’ve learnt a couple of new things about it that’s kind of put me off using it for my mature plants. Thank you so much, Lyn 😊 Yeah it was long overdue to get these all repotted, I think if I had been repotting them yearly the roots would have been more substantial. Haha the Mr Bean one made my mum almost choke on her cup of tea when she watched it 😂 Got some Aloes and Gasteria to repot soon as well but I’ll do separate videos on those. Thanks so much again, Lyn. Have a wonderful Friday and upcoming weekend from Edith & myself to you and Hans ❤️🌵☀️🌺🌼🏜

Thank you so much, Rye 😊 Yeah for the Haworthia I’m going away from the JI compost, I read recently over time that Haworthia tend to not do well in loamy soil, although all these ones had the JI in them. Will be good to see how they all do in this new mix, though. Yeah the coco coir comes in blocks and needs soaking first to prepare it. Hi, how big do these grow each year and when are they fully grown please .
@Cactimania Жыл бұрын
It’s depends on the species. Some like maughanii are slow growers, where others like cooperi are fairly moderate growers, and many of the hybrids are fast growers. If they’re repotted yearly then that certainly makes a difference in how fast and large they get. Most wont grow to a huge size which is another reason they’re considered good windowsill plants.
