Satellite Missions Catalogue ISS Utilization: XCOM (X-ray Communications) Last updated:Apr 25, 2019 ISS Utilization: XCOM (X-ray Communications) + NISTEx II of STP-H6 payloads A new experimental type of deep space communications technology is scheduled to be demonstrated on the International Space Station. Currently, NASA relies on radio waves to send information between spacecraft and Earth. Emerging laser communications technology offers higher data rates that let spacecraft transmit more data at a time. This demonstration involves XCOM (X-ray Communications), which offers even more advantages. 1) X-rays have much shorter wavelengths than both infrared and radio waves. This means that, in principle, XCOM can send more data for the same amount of transmission power. The X-rays can broadcast in tighter beams, thus using less energy when communicating over vast distances. If successful, the experiment could increase interest in the communications technology, which could permit more efficient Gbit/s data rates for deep space missions. These extremely high-speed rates of data transfer are not currently common, but new research projects have pushed computing capability toward this range for some technologies. "We've waited a long time to demonstrate this capability," said Jason Mitchell, an engineer at NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, who helped develop the technology demonstration, which relies on a device called the MXS (Modulated X-ray Source). "For some missions, XCOM may be an enabling technology due to the extreme distances where they must operate," Mitchell said. Perhaps more dramatically, at least as far as human spaceflight is concerned, X-rays can pierce the hot plasma sheath that builds up as spacecraft hurdle through Earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speeds. The plasma acts as a shield, cutting off radio frequency communications with anything outside the vehicle for several seconds - a nail-biting period of time dramatically portrayed in the movie, Apollo 13. No one has ever used X-rays in a communications system, though, so other applications not yet conceived could emerge, Mitchell said. "Our goal for the immediate future is finding interested partners to help further develop this technology," Mitchell said.

I have a doubt on band witdth, does the light band from sun differ with the ones from pulsars? And if so I expect more new wave length lights which we haven’t observed in sun light. Light doesn’t have mass. Light is a non mass energy. Light don’t have any color. When light energy touch on the atoms the atoms will create the color. So the color light traveling speed will be depend type of atom. Space have light but space is a dark.

Sir I don't know that the photon have mass but if it have some mass means my theory secondary special theory of relativity is correct because it says that the photon have some negligible mass than all other object in this universe and it's mass is always constant was my theory said. I think this experiment supports my special theory of relativity and I suggest that this theory doesn't change the einstein's special theory of relativity further I suggest that the object which have constant maximum velocity while it's have some constant minimum mass eventhough the einstein's special theory of relativity said that the relativistic mass of the photon is equal to the rest mass of the photon but it didn't said that the photon have zero mass so I come to say that the mass of the photon was approximately equal to zero but never equal to zero it means the photon pretending to us like it has zero mass but the physics says that it has some negligible mass I think this theory doesn't create a great impact in einstein's special theory of relativity because it is a part of special theory of relativity which means it obey the time dilation concept if this experiment will get success I really said that it will give a contribution in physics i believe on it . What you think about it please reply for my comment

ஒளிக்கு நிறை இருந்தால் ஒரு குருப்பிட்ட அளவு அதிக ஒளியானது பொருட்களை துப்பாக்கி தோட்டாக்களை போல துளைத்து ஊடுருவி சென்றுவிடும்...எனவே நிறை இருக்க வாய்ப்பு இல்லை.
