When the sacro-iliac joint is loaded in the wrong confiuration, ligaments are unequally loaded and sustain damage. Muscles tighten up in an attempt to splint the damage but only serve to perpetuate the faulty positioning of the sacral joints. You need to massage the knots out of the muscle. Lying on a tennis ball will do this for you. Follow this up with a safe piriformis and buttock muscle stretch, and things will likely improve.
