VIDEO CORRECTION - According to massdrop website From Christian Tanimoto III.COLLABORATIONS - "This driver is closely related to the driver in the new HD660S. EDIT: Same size (both 38mm as confirmed by Sennheiser), same materials, there are some differences in the damping scheme and driver housing." Regarding saying these sound more like 6** Series than 5** series - This comment was made in comparison to the CURRENT 5** and 6** line up. Not the old one. The 660S has the driver from the HD700. The 580X has same drivers than 600 and 650. But with other damping. All three have 38 mm. But the Jubilee has 150 Ohm. Like the 660S. 600 and 650 are 300 Ohm.

Got mine a few months ago, and I LOVE them. I would have to agree with you 100% on your analysis of how they sound. Super detail oriented, not the widest sounding. I switch between these and the Hifiman 4XX that I also got. Between those two headphones, I am very very happy with my listening experiences. Though I may need to get a slightly more powerful amp to really push the 4XX. Love your content, keep up the great work!

Can you describe a bit more how they compare? I have the HE 4XX as well, powering them with an Aune X1S.
@megazine6 жыл бұрын
I own the 650 (6xx), 4xx, AKG 7XX and the 58X. In my opinion (preference) the 58X just sounds superior to all of them. In terms of a more fair comparison, the 58X sounds very close to the 6XX but the bass on the 58X is superior. The music just sounds very full and very enjoyable. On Massdrop and Head-Fi, everyone is praising this set; nobody fully understand why a headset for $150 sounds arguably superior to $500 headsets or equally as good. In my opinion it’s more enjoyable than my 6XX, which lacks in bass. Must own
@davidmason82126 жыл бұрын
megazine Because of the similar driver of 58x to the 660s I do not think that the 58x has the same smoothness in sound do you agree with me ? And regarding the bass is it analytical like the m50 or boomy like the 770 ??
@rich10514146 жыл бұрын
The bass rolls off at about 100hz. This is a mid forward headset. The high end is also more forward than the low end. The low end is pretty much absent, I am sorry to say. Not as absent as some sennheiser headphones though.
@davidmason82126 жыл бұрын
megazine why you still keeping the k7xx ? If you have the 4xx and 6xx i think there is no need for the 7xx
@rich10514146 жыл бұрын
"Every" Not true. The DT990's can be FAR too boomy if you mess with the dampening, and they are open backs. Open backs generally have less low end, but that is not an absolute. The primary reason most of them lack low end is not because they are open back, but because of the reason you want open back in the first place. More stereo separation. The issue is, the lower the frequency, the less the brain is able to locate that sound, so headphones heavy on the low end generally lack the separation people expect from an open back headphone.
For ppl who are into modding just a bit, you can change out the parts like the matte grey to the gloss black from the 660s and the grills too or just spray paint them.

@PhantomGett6 жыл бұрын
But I do have to say, me personally, I feel like I get more slap out of the 6XXs. A/Bing them is a weird experience. For me, the 6XXs are more analytic in that I notice more detail, more things... And to my ears they're noticeably darker, or there's less treble energy. But the 58Xs? Their sound signature is just, inoffensive. Before I had the 6XXs, which I'm still getting a real feel for, the 58Xs were my go to. I just kept coming back to them for their musicality. The 4XXs, SHPs, HE 350s, and M40x's all had a less desirable sound, again to my ears, than the 58X. Those headphones just felt like home for lack of a better term. No doubt in my mind, some of the best headphones you can purchase for $150

These are a fantastic pair of headphones. I've had mine for over a month and they are my go to for portable use. I received my copy of the 58x's a couple days ago and i cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with these headphones, even if they were double the price. For $150 these are a GRAND SLAM. I already have the HD600 and have access to my fathers HD650 and the 58x's are just as good, if not better. To my ears they are more "fun" and have more bass than the 600 and only very slightly more bass than the 650's. To me they are more closely related to the 650's with the difference being a every so slight better vocals response. To me, the vocals were extremely similar to the 600's. All 3 are EXCELLENT on their own regards. For $150 the 58x's are an amazing deal that 99% of people will be 100% happy with, in my humble opinion. If i had a gun to my head and could only keep 1 pair out of the 3, i would keep the 58x's, because the sound signature is a hair more pleasing to me overall. I powered all 3 headphones thru a JDS Labs the Element dac/amp combo. Btw, the 58x's were easier to power than the 600's or 650's, but not by a ton. The Element had much more power left in the tank on all 3 sets. Cheers, everyone!

My DAC/Amp setup is very simple, a Schiit Magni 3 and an iFi Nano Black, but I’m happy with this set up. My head says stop here, chasing the extra 5 - 10% in sound isn’t worth (to me) the $1000’s investment. david maison Mate, I honestly cant pick one over the other. I’m not very good at articulating what I hear, I’m no audiophile. But to me, they’re mostly quite similar, but the slight differences are enough for me to want to keep both. The 58x isn’t as smooth as the 6xx - the treble isn’t as veiled as it is on the 6xx, and the bass of the 58x is stronger and tighter. If I HAD to pick just one, I’d pick the 58x purely because it’s $50 cheaper.

The one major thing I don’t like about these is how hard they hug around my head, I have never been able to get them comfortable for years and years with the default earpads. I did order a thicker pair of ear pads from Drop for $50 (way overpriced) and they def change the sound to be a little more muted, but they are so much more comfortable now that all that headband pressure isn’t directly on my head, it’s more spread out evenly with bigger softer ear cups. Without EQ they don’t sound great either, but with a good EQ APO profile they sound really good in music and gaming. I do find listening to music on YT is pretty amazing with these headphones. Apparently something in my comment set off the auto moderation from this channels KZbin hammer settings, and my comment was removed pretty quickly. Sucks we live in 1984 now

The leather pads are probably the cause. I don't have a pair of 58X, but I noticed a significant bass increase on my fidelio X2HR when I swapped the stock velour pads for leather.

Nice review Josh, btw I don't know if you know about this but there's a way to mod these headphones to make it sound almost identical to the 660s. I personally haven't tried it but others did and that's what they say...
@Tomestoh6 жыл бұрын
I had to wait around 7 months for my hd6xx's but the wait is worth it and it wasn't caused by either sennheiser or massdrop but a company that was making parts for sennheiser if I remember correctly

Would you recommend these for gaming? You've said that it has great imaging, that you can pinpoint sounds/details from their sources within its soundstage very easily. However, the soundstage is lacking (you've used descriptions such as narrow, intimate, etc.). For the most part, I like to play competitive shooters. Thanks!

Yes. They are more than capable for gaming.

@@JoshuaValour These or the fidelio x2hrs for semi competitive gaming?
@Angel-AbC94 жыл бұрын
What's confusing is that you love the vocals and explain it as the best or one of the best in clarity, but also said I. 150.00 range only, 150 is cheaper headphones and ok should be better,so my point is the 58x cannot compete with 500.00 mids and vocals ? So which 300 or 4 or 5 has way better vocals?? This is very unclear .if Josh can't explain , can someone else chime in on this question.

Hey Josh, I've seen audiophiles on KZbin say if you pop open the chassis and remove the foam pads quite easily from the 58x they sound much more like the 660s. Do you have a knowledge of this? Would love to hear your opinion on this mod. Thanks for everything, you gd hero.

Nope it’s not close. I feel very enclosed in my 58x either way compared to my 660s. They are tuned similarly, but just looking at the driver with them open it’s not remotely similar and only sounds similar due to sennheiser sound. I don’t recommend the 58x at all. 6xx or 660s or another headphone all the way.
@jameskillbot2867 Жыл бұрын
Yes the 58x sound good, but for 60$ more there is much better out there.

I was really interested in the 58X, but already owning an old pair of 580 Precisions from the '90s and the 6XX from Massdrop these seemed like a sidestep from what I already have more than an improvement. The main difference people are talking about with these vs the old 580s is more bass as you said, the original 580s have very light bass and stuff like southern rap is going to have sub bass hiding in the background. I'd have to listen to a pair myself before I buy.
@arthurhaywood21846 жыл бұрын
The 58X is similar to the 580 Precisions in name only. Totally different driver with an 150 Ohm impedance. I still have the 565 Ovations which sound very close to the 580 (slightly less treble extension) & I'd say that the 58X would be an overall improvement over the 580 Precision but you will lose some soundstage width.

I love my pair. I was using a Fiio e7 and e9 amp and dac setup. I just sold the Fiio for an upgrade. My budget is $500 for a preferred balanced amp and dac combo. I’m looking at the Schiit Jotunheim and the massdrop Liquid Carbon X + SDAC. Any suggestions? Thanks! Great review!

Hey Joshua, would you use a DAC/AMP to extract more juice out of the HD68X o you think its innecesary? I just got my own set. And, I like them. I have the M1060s and these as my main sets. I have a question/request. Is there any chance you could add if you feel a headphone plays nice with an equalizer like Peace (peace-equalizer-apo-extension)? It seems like the M1060s do more than the 58X. I wounder if there is hidden value in equalizers, kinda like an overclock or underclock of a CPU. Thanks

Hey Josh. Love your reviews. Not sure if you still look at these comments but ill take a shot anyway. I bought the 58x because i like the clear vocals and intimacy, and do agree with your opinion for the majority. I also just watched your video on what to look for in reviewers and about the roles and responsibilities of a review and a viewer. Needless to say, I value your opinion, and wanted to know what type of headphones you'd recommend at the lower end of pricing ( something like a $200-250 figure) that has a great, wide sound stage. My 58x has its role, but i definitely agree that the soundstage is lacking, and wanna know what I should look for. P.S. if anyone else has a good recommendation for me I'd love to hear it as well!
