Such a beauty, your model as well as the original in the 50s/60s - static as well as in flight. As a kid used to get the yearly TWA wall-calendar, during some years with the small Logo on each monthly page being the exact copy of this plane, which we used to call the "Super G" and it was already then my favourite Connie version (proportion, painting, the wingtanks, as well as engine-sound and not to forget the brake screaming while taxiing!) Thank you for reviving these fascinating years!

Whenever I see one of these giant-scale airliners flying I can't help but think how cool it would be to mount some cameras inside and then rent out FPV goggles to the spectators so they could get an on board viewof the flight, and it could help defray the costs. The view of the wing with the engines turning would be great. The view from the cockpit would be awesome! Beautiful plane! Thanks for the video.

Someone mentioned how the radial engines leaked oil. Another mess was the exhaust trail over the wings. All enlisted crewmembers, if low enough in rank, would have to take rags and gas and try to wipe up the trails. We would go in the wheel well and open a valve to get about a half bucket of avgas to clean with. The North Atlantic was like riding a bucking bronc. In the back of the EC-121 we had 3 bunks to nap in. When it was wild, we would strap ourselves in to keep from being tossed out of the bunk. The EC-121 had a search and height finding radar plus reams of communication gear. Probably most aviation enthusiasts have heard of the Flying Tigers Airline. It did a lot of charter work for DoD. In the fall of 1962 one of its aircraft taking military dependents to Europe went down about 500 miles off the west coast of Ireland. My crew got the assignment to fly SAR commander over the area as military and civilian ships were rushing to the area. Our job was to keep track of all aircraft and ships in the area and to relay their messages to the NATO center at Keflavik, Iceland. We were all surprised at the number of survivors. I think maybe half survived but not positive. When we did preflight prior to takeoff, we were told there probably wouldn't be survivors so it was expected to be more of a body recovery mission. The North Atlantic is wickedly cold as we wore winter flying suits and had rubber outer wear (Nicknamed poopy suits) to put on in case we ditched. Fortunately these people were 600-700 miles south of where we normally flew and I imagine that helped more survive. I'm 76 now and you never forget those days. I had it easy as this was before Vietnam, I received flight pay, we made special runs into Scotland for liberty and no one was shooting at me!

My favourite aircraft from my 1953 'Observer's book of Aircraft'! Such a beautiful aircraft and I was lucky enough to come across a detailed video recently which explained the technical reasons for the beautiful shape, long undercarriage and triple tail! Interesting! Excellent camera work and also excellent prop avoidance skills whilst starting and restraining! I don't know if the sound track has been superimposed during the flight sequence, but it sounds remarkably realistic for four petrol 2 strokes!! Pity it was so bumpy...maybe gyros could help with the realism? I have total admiration for the chaps who created and followed through on this and similar projects. Thanks for sharing. Brilliant! We still get to see a TWA Constellation occasionally take off from Charles Wheeler airport in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. It taxis to the north end of the runway and takes off headed south, directly towards the downtown highrise buildings just across the river. So it must bank immediately upon takeoff. In our post 9-11 world, it is shocking to see a big plane heading towards a downtown area. But the banking aircraft presents a wonderful view of itself. Cars pull over and stop just to admire her grace and beauty. Your scale model is beautiful.

I just watched this today and thought I’d read through some of the comments. I note a large number harping on the props. Now, I don’t fly or build scale aircraft and the explanation about engine torque made sense. But I can tell you that a myself and a buddy of mine went to a British car show one year (we both had cars but at the time his TR6 was in the midst of a long restoration) and as we were looking at one TR6 he’s started pointing out all the flaws with it. He then caught himself and said, I guess I shouldn’t be going on about that, since his car is here and mine is in pieces in the garage.” My point is, that until the naysayers are on the field with something similar, I suggest that questioning this person’s choices in building what I think is a magnificent model of a Connie should perhaps reconsider their positions. End of rant.

What a beautiful reproduction of this iconic aircraft. From what I could observe the attention to detail was awesome. I have only one comment, that is the need to rev the motors up and down the rpm range while taxiing. The airplane sounds great at idle and when it passes by at cruise speed, but the revving made it sound too much like a lawn blower. I mean no ill will with bringing this up and feel kind of picky doing it, but for the sake of increased realism, not having to rev the motors would help. I have a lot of respect for those people who make RC models, my former supervisor was deeply involved in the hobby when I worked for him back in the 70s. Unfortunately he passed in the late 90s and I recall at his funeral there was a model of a Corsair WWII model on display. I made sure to stop and take a closer look at it and I could tell he was detail oriented, the airplane was gorgeous in every respect.

I remember being told by a then quite elderly work colleage back in the 1970s that he regularly flew on business across the Atlantic to the US on Constellations during the 50s. He told me that they were very noisy, vibrated like mad and were chucked about by bad weather. He feared for his safety on a number of occasions. "Thank goodness they got around to perfecting jets", I recall him saying! Great model though.

wallaby 4 i dont know anyone that has lost a finger hand starting model aero engines in the 33 yrs ive been flying ! At most i know of two people that ha e cut their fingers once in all that time. Just doesent happen because these people are at the top of their game and fully aware of what they are doing. The camera does lie because you cannot judge depth of field on a flat screen so it appeares more dangerous than it actually is.

The triple tails were a part of the design because TWA specified that the new plane had to fit into their existing hangars. So the Connie's most iconic feature actually had nothing to do with aerodynamics but with mundane ground maintenance needs, and yaw stability suffered somewhat as a result. Look at any contemporary large 4-engine plane, like a DC-7, and they all have much taller vertical tails. The tail on the B-29 was enlarged on the later B-50 for more stability, and the single tail Privateer version of the B-24 was found to be more stable than it's twin tailed forerunner. I've always been a fan of the Constellation though, because I grew up about a mile away from a Super Connie mounted on top of a restaurant in Penndel, PA. It was a sad day when they took it down and cut the wings off and trucked it away.
@tbobborap17 жыл бұрын
thanks barry - very interesting
@thomasrose69627 жыл бұрын
the area of the triple tails probably was greater than the single tailed counterparts so why did they barely work?
@TankBuilders7 жыл бұрын
Thomas Rose the Connie was designed as a long range, high speed transport with minimum drag. By exploiting the prop wash, the fins could be reduced and with it the form drag. Unfortunately, at lower power settings, when yaw stability and control are most critical, the effectiveness of fin and rudder was also reduced. Compare with the B-24 Liberator and the PB4Y Privateer. The latter reverted to a very large single fin for the same reason.

I just watched another video featuring a large scale Connie and I noted right away it was equipped with three bladed props, the same configuration as the real Constellation. Is there a reason why you decided on going with the two blade instead of the more authentic looking three blade? Did this have to do with the power of the motors? I have another question regarding the landing gear. One subtle feature that gives away you are looking at a model and not the real airplane is the jerky bouncing effect as the plane taxis. I thought if it were possible to equip such a small landing gear set up with shock absorbers this would help buffer those jerky movements and result in a more realistic presentation. I made some other comments below regarding model and flying realism, all constructive from just an interested follower of your hobby, one that I appreciate very much and admire the dedication you folks have as well.
