Rusty Shades Restoration

Күн бұрын

In this restoration video, I will bring back to life an antique bread cutter produced in Germany in 1899 by the Alexanderwerk company. I bought it from an antique website similar to eBay, thinking it would make a significant restoration. This antique kitchen tool is beautiful and massive but beaten up by time. The restoration process was pretty tough because all the parts were very rusty. The bread cutter was also built from many parts that I had to restore individually. Took me one week to achieve this result.
In this restoration video, you will see cast iron repair with Epoxy resin, powder coating, wood restoration and painting, sandblasting, laser engraving on different materials, and laser cutting, in addition to the usual restoration work details.
I love how this antique bread slicer turned out and am happy I could save it from decay.
Now it is perfectly functional and can be used again!
More info on the Ortur Laser Master 3 - www.amazon.com/Master-Engrave...
I hope you like this restoration project and share this autumn joy with me.
Cheers, and Thanks for watching !!!

Thank you so much! ✊️ I'm using Lightburn Software, so there you have to set the speed at minimum and the power at 100% then you select the material thickness and if the material is soft that's all, if not you can increase the thickness and try more passes. Cheers!

@rustyshadesrestoration
@rustyshadesrestoration Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Tonja. Sandblasting wood is a known and common practice among restorers. It cleans the wood better and doesn't harm it like sandpaper, especially if you have some carvings on it. Here you can read more: startwoodworkingnow.com/sandblasting-wood/ Cheers!
@Bob1923Dobbs
@Bob1923Dobbs 9 ай бұрын
Why bother? You puttied and painted it. Also, that wood will likely resemble swiss cheese on the inside and be structurally compromised. One would think the only reason to preserve the original wood is for aesthetics but painting it renders that reason a moot point. Why not just replace the wood? Not to be an arm-chair quarterback but wouldn't it have made more sense to impregnate the pieces with an epoxy resin that would strengthen the wood and still allow you to see the grain and the wormy texture? You would also have been able to stain it as you wanted before applying resin.

Tha was and you always do a great job. I would like to mention a tip that I got of another Man's channel. A bell that needed to be fixed cause the bottom of it on one side was gone. He used solder strips he placed under it. I was thinking THAT WON'T WORK"!! he placed one and melted it. Then another. And a third one. He then sanded it and it was hard and stayed that way. I was really surprized. Your way was also great

I'm glad you enjoyed the video J T. Yeah, I'm always making that mistake and few more others. English it is not my mother tongue, so I'm exposed a bit, but I'll try to focus more on that. About the laser, idk what means expensive for you. On the market it is 700$ and without trying to pitch you or smtg like that, in my opinion the price it is well balanced with the machine quality and what can be done with it. You can find more info in the description, as well a 15% or 50$ discount that I obtained from this deal for my viewers that are interested. Thank you for watching!

What is the function of the two holes next to the "X" in "Alexanderwerk"? Or did somebody ruin this part by drilling useless holes? You can get rid of wood bugs if you bake the parts at ~80° Celsius in a kitchen oven.

I was thinking about that, but I consider it too risky. A drop of bad luck and my restorer career it will be gone 😅

I wouldnt call it a professional restoration. The hinge needed to be adressed and the epoxy putty on the bottom side needed shaping. However i still respect and appreciate your efforts and your video was enjoyable. Thank you.

Hi! Thank you for your feedback. Nobody said that is a perfect or professional restoration. It is the first bread cutter that I ever restored, but I learned a lot from this project. Becoming a professional requires a lot of time and experience. I'm just trying to achieve that, but the road is long. Thank you for watching my work! Cheers!

Somehow I heard a woodworm named Greta say "HOW DARE YOU!" All joking aside, you have done an INCREDIBLE restoration. Very well done indeed 👍

Great job but you definitely need a disclaimer at the beginning of the video saying it has flashing lights that may cause epileptic seizures!

Thank you. Oh, I didn't think about that. On the device, instructions weren't specified that it could cause epileptic seizures. Thank you for your recommendation. I'll do it for future videos.

Just a thought. You used food safe paint on the wood. Is the powder coat paint also food safe? I know it's a lot tougher than that used on the wood but it can still chip or get scratched.
