Right after 9/11 my son (Navy) was deployed to Iraq - he was a Seabee and the Marines plowed the way for them. I am so thankful to all of our military sons and daughters - all gave some, and some gave all. My son made it through and came home - I pray for all of them to come home safely - will the world ever get the memo that not only is war Hell - but it also doesn't matter where you are or what country you live in - we all pay a serious price for it. When will we ever give peace a chance? Let's try - you never know - it may actually work! 🥰🤗💖💖💖

I first saw the Blue Angels in San Diego at Miramar Air Force Base with my late husband, 6 year old daughter, and 1 year old son. I was concerned due to the loud volume for my children. They shouted with joy. That was 35 years ago and still one of the best experiences.

That’s because our media doesn’t show it. You can only see this on special channels or at air shows. I love watching the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds. It’s harder to get to shows because budget cuts have affected how many they attend and social issues have decreased the number of shows. Take your kids and go whenever you have a chance, they are often free to attend. My favorite is Fleet Week in San Francisco.

I had the honor and pleasure of being billeted off base in a civilian hotel at the same time as the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team. Once a few members saw me in uniform, they figured it out; a 41 year old Air Force 2nd Lieutenant? It was clear to them I was a ‘Mustang’, a term the Air Force doesn’t use. I had served nearly 20 years in the enlisted ranks before taking my commission. They passed that information through their ranks. Every time I saw these exceptional young men anywhere - in the halls, in the restaurant, on the base - they showed me the utmost respect and deference. They made it very clear that they respected me as a senior enlisted person, as well as respecting me as an officer. The USMC Silent Drill Team is an exceptional team of exceptional Marines who are also exceptional humans. I am proud to have earned their respect.

Actually, this plane was NOT originally intended to operate from aircraft carrier decks. The plane was originally the Norrthrup F-17 and was supposed to compete with the General Dynamics F-16 as America's replacement for the Northrupp F-5 as the plane we could share with our allies. During the design flyoff competitions it was outclassed in every category by the F-16 and may have been the reason Northrup was sold to Boeing. The original Northrup F-17 was designed as a land based fighter and required Extensive redesign and modification to enable it to become a Carrier based fighter.

When the Blues flew the A-4F Skyhawk, the only non fighter designated aircraft they ever flew, they needed to replace their training birds, so they went to VA-127. Lucky us! We got six of the most abused aircraft to practically rework, while they got six of our best. We were the west coast replacement squadron and couldn't reject any aircraft under any condition.

I have a lot of connections to P'cola and I've seen the Angels there, but I'll always associate them with El Centro, CA, their winter home. I was stationed in San Diego and my best friend (even now as we close in on 75) was stationed in El Centro, so I drove the 80 miles often to visit. We lost a plane one week that crashed into a beef ranch. That whole weekend we had steaks, good steaks, breakfast lunch and dinner. One last tidbit: the Eagles song "Peaceful Easy Feeling" was written by one of the band's favorite songwriters who played a gig in El Centro one night and told his bandmates to go back to L.A. without him because this girl said she was going to come back and pick him up after the show. She didn't and he wrote that song while he was freezing his butt off waiting for her.

One minor correction - the numbers on the planes are not based on "seniority" - BA #1 is the squadron commander - Always. 2-4 are based on skills and which pilot is best suited to flying that position. BA #5 is the lead solo BA #6 is the 2nd solo. Each pilot is limited to a 2 year tour in the Blues. They rotate about half each year so there is a mix of junior and senior pilots. BA 4 may be "senior" on the team to BA 1-3 or 5 or 6. Just depends on the rotation. In rare occasions they will bring back a pilot or extend the tour - A few years ago one of the pilots was having health issues - ear infections, etc which affected his ability to maintain position - I think it was #3 or 4. They brought back the previous year's pilot for that position, since he was most familar with the show and team. They didn't change numbers for him because he was "more senior" than everyone else on the team - including the skipper.

Fat albert was slightly off midline if you noticed during the tight formation. That is fairly common as FA uses Marine Corp pilots. Most marine pilots only have 1 good eye making staying midline very difficult. Most marine air bases have adjusted their runway stripes to compensate for this.

We love Fat Albert and the Marine Rifle Team. Blue Angels put on a better show with the A4's as you could actually see most of the Blue Angel's routine. First time for me NAS Memphis 1979. Of course a "Tomcat" went out with full after burners when they were done, just because. Yes a Tomcat was very impressive especially when Ready 1 was launching on us (P-3 Navy), off the cat fully loaded in the Persion Gulf in the early 80's. But still the A4's put on a lovely show.

I have 2 connections to this. Son was stationed at Marine Barracks, 8&I (I'm also a former Marine, Semper Fi). I had taken a position with Verizon with me taking care of all the Annapolis State Government. The day to see the Blue Angels is the day before Cadet Graduation. The BA practice and buzz around making for a nice show (the day of graduation is a nothing burger). Annapolis itself is very small. Lucky for me, all my accounts were walkable. I also had clearance and keys to access everywhere in every building. I'd watched from rooftops and a cupola prior, but my contact for the State House had a plan. The day and time arrive for practice. We are going to the top of the SH dome! Mind you, this place is older than the nation. We go through the fire doors and start the climb. The steps are small, maybe less than a foot wide, and a 5 inch tread. State contact, I'll call Bill. Bill was built like Joe Rogan. Bill's leading the way, and I pause at a window in the dome. Do you know how things slow down? I see a BA jet, airbrakes down, and starting to throttle up. Close enough to make out his headgear. The BA tore off, and this centuries old dome went to rattling. Dust falling, all that. I'm noping out of there, and the SC was climbing my back to get past me. Good times

I was 5 years old the first time I seen them preform in Winston Salem North Carolina with my father who worked for Piedmont Airlines. I never felt anything like that before. I've loved aviation ever since since. I flew for Piedmont Airlines for 15 and a half years. My aircraft of choice Boeing 727 200.
