I've probably asked this question before; how do they determine when to use DPU? First grain train is 3 Units at front. Second grain train is 1-1-1. Does it just depend on what mood the crew is in? 😅😂✌️

I honestly wonder the same thing, CN is certainly more organized then CP, I think it depends if power needs to travel and get somewhere for other trains, sometimes units are offline if a bunch are up front.

@@TracksideTyson Makes sense. Thanks. I miss your axle counts ✌️

@@johndowner2196 DPU's are placed in regard to train length and tonnage. Another factor for placement of the DPU's is what kind of grades the train will encounter. An example are CPKC coal and grain trains that add power at Golden BC for the climb to the MacDonald tunnel. The extra power is cut-off at Geddes BC where an EB will pick up the power and return it to Golden. Geddes is west of Chase BC so the power is on for dynamic braking come down Albert Canyon to Revelstoke, the climb at Tappen and then downhill to Chase.

Beautiful work there Bud

But what I was trying to say was CP is much less organized with power planning as some power doesn’t come off at Geddis and it could be a short grainer with tons of power, or huge train with 2 units, it’s always different configurations.
