If it's above MSRP it's arguably not a "value". If it's a discount from THE LITERAL HIGHEST PRICE IT HAS EVER ACHIEVED, it certainly doesn't mean it's a value. Trying to say that a piece that is 30% off from its most inflated ever is a value is very uh, snakeoil.

The drop in price just shows how much overpriced those watches are e.g. the grey market's wishful price... BTW remember the fairy tale we were told about the "investment watches" and the "must have watch collection"? All is from the used car dealer's playbook. It is a service-with-a-smile.

mass produced perishables especially in production shouldn't cost above MSRP. Issue here are people keeping watches in safe deposit boxes. I have seen videos of some "collectors" with safes full of same model watches. Thousands and thousands PP and AP sit in some in dark places for years and years.

Whilst there are numerous factors behind the reason why, one reason which never gets talked about as much is since lockdown a lot of people aren’t as materialistic anymore. It kind of reset a lot of peoples view and appreciate the important things in life.

People are as materialistic as ever. Watch prices are going to go up again once the realisation that there is only so much supply with a very high demand.

"economic headwinds" in China have taken some money out of the market and pressure off the top end prices. If the headwinds increase, expect to see more pieces enter the pre-loved market, with subsequent softening of prices, as those watch lovers scramble for cash dollar liquidity. Notable that while they're made of precious metals, watches aren't considered long term safe havens of value (like raw gold and platinum)... psychologically they're still commodities, in spite of the high prices.

Quality watch auctions for a while have mainly been knocking things down to "Internet-China". They are buying portable items to get assets out of the country, and understood that there was a speculators heaven going on. Recently auctions have been ringing things around the room to get up to one bid short of the minimum acceptable bid (this is legal, apparently!). But over half have been no sales. 2024 will be a bad year for watches. I will buy nice pieces on weakness. But the price must be 6 months ahead. ie. a fecking big discount.

Nautilus and Oak are getting too much attention and fakes are always close to the original, so it seems like everyone's got one. Some might think yours is the $100 version, even if it's the real thing and you won't impress them in any way anymore :) Just buy something you like, don't give a damn about what's trendy. My daily driver is a $1000 Casio Oceanus :P

I have learnt from estate agents analysis that they don't have the slightest clue about data, charts, and statistics. Shop boys will tell you something, but it might not be your best interest. Here's a nice story. I walk into an authorized dealer in 2014 and I purchased a Pam 104. The next night after looking at it on my wrist and looking at the resale values I decided I didn't like it so I headed back to my authorized dealer. While returning the watch, I look in the Rolex case and I see a GMT BLNR; It's just sitting there looking back at me smiling. I wanted a Rolex but I settled, so I wasn't going to make the same mistake as I made one day prior. So after the return was complete which included a maintenance package I shouldn't have gotten, I financed 3k and walked out with an original Batman on my wrist. Those were the days when you could walk into an AD and purchase a Sub if you wanted to. Little did I know the market would change for what seems like forever. $8950 out the door w no tax and today I'm grateful the watch God's were looking over me 🎉😊
