@wannabetowasabe6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the pressure valve start venting before the tank ruptured? I was thinking this was the tank overheating and the valve releasing the pressure. In that case wouldn't you want to allow the venting gas to burn off rather than vent and build up somewhere under the structure and explode? I don't know much about this. An ex-brother in law of mine was injured (burned) in the Kingman, Arizona train tank car explosion of 1973. He was running across U.S. 66 from the gas station he worked at when the explosion occurred and was knocked to the pavement, so the heat moved past him and above him, minimizing his injuries.

Ummm.... I live in middle-of-no-ware Maine and all gas stations have both manual and automatic fire suppression systems. Even after no action from workers inside the system will automatically try to put out the blaze and call 911. In most cases the system cannot be disabled with out a special key. A lot of gas stations in the more rural areas (which is where I live) are available even after the store closes and are un-maned all night till the morning and can be used with a debit or credit card and a few actually take $1,$5,$10,$20 bills. So this leave me wondering, in such a progressive state as California why is there not an auto fire suppression system activating???
@ffjsb6 жыл бұрын
Matt, this was a fire IN a vehicle, a fire suppression system wouldn't put it out. An automatic system wouldn't be able to get water, foam, or dry chem into the vehicle effectively. Fires at pumps aren't actually all that common, and the pumps have automatic shutoffs, and the fire cannot travel to the underground tanks. So it's actually cheaper to not have a system, and just replace pumps and the canopy if there's a fire. Serious injuries and death from fire at filling stations are even more rare.
@dontyou826 жыл бұрын
I'm aware that an automatic fire suppression system would have not helped with the fire in the vehicle. I was just kinda assuming a fire system was about to actuate from the heat of the fire making the heat sensors trip. I was surprised nothing like that happened and on closer look I didn't see any fire suppression nozzles or heat sensors in the canopy ceiling so that prompted my previous rant. haha Also considering a USED gas pump will run you anywhere from $1,500 to $10,000 (They average around $4,000) and sometimes you have to buy other internal components that your used unit does not come with to make it compatible with your station design and features ... instillation, programming, testing, calibration, etc. will run into much more money! Thats just the pumps... what about the repair or replacement of the canopy and all that entails such as the electrical and lighting in it (though I will say maybe they could just replace half of the canopy), the lost revenue from less gas sales??? Therefore I can't see that it would be cheaper to not get some sort of fire system to protect the owners investment.
@ffjsb6 жыл бұрын
Matt, there are shut off valves below the pumps, and fire can't travel through the lines to the underground tanks, so vehicles are generally the biggest fire threat. And since automatic fire suppression systems aren't effective on them, there's no reason to invest in them. And most gas stations make most of their money on items sold inside the store, not the gasoline. That's just there to get you to buy beer and cigs. And if the vehicle owner's insurance has to pay for damages, it typically doesn't cost the station much.

The Tank is NOT punktured. The Pressure Valve have been open because of the Fire the Heat have raised the Pressure in the Tank massive. The Valve open and let the Pressure our. Problem is: That can happen several times ,but every Time the Liquid Level inside the Tank is fallen. The Liquid is also cooling the inside of the Tank ,and when the Level falling ,the Tank get every Time hotter ,until it comes to a Bleve,a Livedangerous Explosion of the vaporized Gas inside the Tank. I don't understand ... the LNG tank was basically blowtorching the neighboring gas pump yet the crew with the hand line seemed primarily concerned with using a concentrated stream on the burned bus rather than a diffuse mist on the area between the bus and the pump. I also only see the single Engine crew at work initially - why did this not merit a full structure fire response?
@ffjsb6 жыл бұрын
You're NOT going to "diffuse" that giant blowtorch. The pump is not going to blow up either. What they should've been doing is using MORE water to extinguish the fire in the bus and cool the LNG tank so it didn't blow and go rocketing down the block.
@whiteknightcat6 жыл бұрын
That's why I asked about the diffuser pattern - not to extinguish a fire with the single hand line but to cool the area and keep the existing fires contained until more resources were brought to bear by the other units that arrived after.
@ffjsb6 жыл бұрын
They used a line that was too small. The goal should've been to extinguish the fire in the bus rapidly. That would cool the tank, and cause it to vent less gas out, protecting any exposures. Once the flames impinged on the pumps, they were trashed. And while more manpower always helps, one crew should've been able to at least contain the fire, with others coming to mop up, so to speak.
