Mr Ed, you and Good Time Charlie are made for bee keeping!! Even better than a shed full of bees is your excitement as you come across the queen herself. Very nice hive capture this time around with a good number of bees. I love the sounds of the birds in the background! Jeff - I'm impressed with how tolerant those bees were to the bee brush. Like every beekeeper, I've got a bee brush, but if I want to get my bees mad, I break out the bee brush, especially if I don't smoke them a bunch first. I end up with bees trying to sting every set of bristles on the brush. Another fun video, thanks! - Jeff, Cincinnati
@JeffHorchoff8 ай бұрын

I checked out a book on beekeeping in western Canada and was surprised to see that the development of a Queen from egg to eruption was LESS time than for workers or drones! I guess when the hives continuance is in the balance you want a queen fast.
@JeffHorchoff8 ай бұрын
A queen will emerge 16 days after the egg is laid, a worker, 21 days, and a drone, 24 days. You are correct, queens need to come out as quickly as possible for the survival of the hive. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Nice black tailed queen and lots of brood in all stages. These bees were infested bad with SHB and had very little honey or nectar so i think i did them a favor. Put swiffer sheets and a feeder of 2 to 1 on them as soon as i had them on the hive stand. Now it's up to them and the good Lord. Next I'm getting a vac.

@JeffHorchoff8 ай бұрын
I have to agree, bee build the way they see. Personally, I can't understand why they choose to build the comb in the way they decide. My guess is has something to do with regulating air flow in the hive. Thanks for watching. God's peace William. Mr. Ed

You will be able to see a follow up video from this hive in about 3 more weeks, that's when I plan on splitting it and making two hives from it. The removal interrupted their swarming urge, but it will begin again in just a few weeks and I will be ready for it. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Mark. Mr. Ed

@@JeffHorchoff Thanks for your reply, and saying you plan to have another video about this. When I've done a cutout like this, it wasn't as big. For me they didn't draw out new comb around the comb I cut out of the wall or tree. In the future, I'm going to feed cutouts 1:1 sugar water, even if there is a flow going on - to help them make more comb.

If the brood comb was mostly Drone, looking on the bright side of having to discard it, you may have eliminated some mites. Did you open up some of the cells to check for mites? Thx and another great video. 👍
@JeffHorchoff8 ай бұрын
I did not open any of the cells to check, it all went into the melter as soon as I got back to the abbey. God's peace Brian. Mr. Ed

What a way to make a removal. Like the queen find. You could almost make a long hive out of it. Glad you found the queen early. Thanks for the video. Take care and God bless.

Cracking me up Ed with the thermal camera running says here is my boot then never shows it on the thermal. Then Ed's holding how many pounds of comb,honey and the floor. Charlie says just bring it out here. I was waiting to hear you say easy for you to say. Great job. Is the cooler just to keep everything at its temperature? Thanks and God bless you both

We are the perfect team, both of us are goof balls! The reason I use the coolers is it maintains temperature. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. Until the next one, God's peace. Mr. Ed

I have a Holly bush next to my raised porch in s.c. during the day there are many as in 50 honey beers on it all day. Very few bees anywhere else. Is this a sign the hive is close or just this bush is the best. Thanks GB

Mr. Ed-can you tell me if you have ever come across a veil/hood that's better for removals? I do a lot of removals and end up taking off the hood on my jacket because it's so cumbersome and restricts vision. I'll trade some stings for being able to see.
@JeffHorchoff5 ай бұрын
When it comes to removals, and a veil to use during them, I have no recommendations as they all are obstructive, and just like you, I will remove mine due to the limitations it puts on me. God's peace Howard. Mr. Ed

Can you please explain how you knew that was drone brood?
@JeffHorchoff8 ай бұрын
Drone brood is identified by it's "over extended" capping covering the cell, and very often they are clumped together in large groups. You can find very good images of drone comb on the internet. Do you close up the opening so a new batch of bees can’t move in?
@JeffHorchoffАй бұрын
I do not as my job is simply to remove the bees and comb, but I do give detailed instructions to the homeowners on what to do to avoid a re infestation. Thanks for watching. God's peace Talley. Mr. Ed

Can you all explain the prevalence of drone comb? Here in the Blue Ridge of SC, my bees are daily disposing of many dozens of drones; many being pre-mature. How is this "natural" and efficient bee behavior? The hives over wintered with and have 40+ lbs of honey each.
@ashleyschenk7648 ай бұрын
What’s your mite load like?
@JeffHorchoff8 ай бұрын
When hives are preparing to swarm, they produce drone cells. This hive was going to swarm within a few weeks for sure. I suspect mites to be the reason for the disposal of the young drones. Of course that is just a guess, but I say that based on the presence of all the honey. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them.
