This hive really surprised me, the size of it and the number of bees so early in the year. We managed removing the hive in almost one piece, and after chasing the bees from the cavity, found the queen. All in all a great removal and Good Time Charlie was able to not only eat lunch, but to catch an afternoon nap as well. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Great video Ed and Charlie, another perfectly executed cut-out. You guys are lucky, we don't do cut-outs up in Canada, feral hives are not as strong as they used to be. But great news for us, we can get into our hives early this year, it will be 57*F next Saturday. Can't wait!

This one was kind of elegant. Nicely done. Taking the comb/bees straight to the box w/o even vacuuming is so efficient and gentle.... And giving them back some of their own honey..... Maybe next time you can give a quick detail of how you contain the hive so that you can share the van ride w/o field bee chaos.

I checked out a book on beekeeping in western Canada and was surprised to see that the development of a Queen from egg to eruption was LESS time than for workers or drones! I guess when the hives continuance is in the balance you want a queen fast.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 ай бұрын
A queen will emerge 16 days after the egg is laid, a worker, 21 days, and a drone, 24 days. You are correct, queens need to come out as quickly as possible for the survival of the hive. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I love the sounds of the birds in the background! Jeff - I'm impressed with how tolerant those bees were to the bee brush. Like every beekeeper, I've got a bee brush, but if I want to get my bees mad, I break out the bee brush, especially if I don't smoke them a bunch first. I end up with bees trying to sting every set of bristles on the brush. Another fun video, thanks! - Jeff, Cincinnati
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 ай бұрын
A bee brush does not attract the attention a camera does, the bees can't stand when the video camera is running which is why it is bombarded so often in the videos....even if I am smoking them. Thanks for watching. God's peace Jeff. Mr. Ed

Love yall and learn a lot from you. I just got home with a nice bunch of bees i took out of a hollow oak tree. Framed up 8 frames of brood comb from that tree. Nice black tailed queen and lots of brood in all stages. These bees were infested bad with SHB and had very little honey or nectar so i think i did them a favor. Put swiffer sheets and a feeder of 2 to 1 on them as soon as i had them on the hive stand. Now it's up to them and the good Lord. Next I'm getting a vac.

Great video! My takeaway is that bees build comb however their hive configuration allows, and to see that comb built perpendicular was amazing. I've noticed that in Thailand, with Apis andreniformis but never in the US.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 ай бұрын
I have to agree, bee build the way they see. Personally, I can't understand why they choose to build the comb in the way they decide. My guess is has something to do with regulating air flow in the hive. Thanks for watching. God's peace William. Mr. Ed

@@JeffHorchoff Thanks for your reply, and saying you plan to have another video about this. When I've done a cutout like this, it wasn't as big. For me they didn't draw out new comb around the comb I cut out of the wall or tree. In the future, I'm going to feed cutouts 1:1 sugar water, even if there is a flow going on - to help them make more comb.

Thank you for sharing. If possible, can you do a follow up video on some of the hives that you removed. If you have any that are in the horizontal style hives that would be a bonus.

I already had plans on show the update on this removal, some really good bees, and I'm anxious to show how they recovered from the removal. Also, I do plan on showing when I rehive my Layens hive this spring, stay tuned for that one as well. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace Kennith. Mr. Ed

The bees do under go a lot of stress during the removal, and I try my best to reestablish the calm that was there before the job was done. Keeping bees on the comb, returning the queen as soon as possible, and feeding them are means I use to bring normalcy back to the hive. Mr. Ed-can you tell me if you have ever come across a veil/hood that's better for removals? I do a lot of removals and end up taking off the hood on my jacket because it's so cumbersome and restricts vision. I'll trade some stings for being able to see.

Drone brood is identified by it's "over extended" capping covering the cell, and very often they are clumped together in large groups. You can find very good images of drone comb on the internet. Can you all explain the prevalence of drone comb? Here in the Blue Ridge of SC, my bees are daily disposing of many dozens of drones; many being pre-mature. How is this "natural" and efficient bee behavior? The hives over wintered with and have 40+ lbs of honey each.

What’s your mite load like?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 ай бұрын
When hives are preparing to swarm, they produce drone cells. This hive was going to swarm within a few weeks for sure. I suspect mites to be the reason for the disposal of the young drones. Of course that is just a guess, but I say that based on the presence of all the honey. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them.
