Low cost airlines fail because regardless of what people say about our air routes there isn't space for more then 2 carriers in Australia. Same reason why VHST struggles to take off here. Lack of patronage and high cost of operation.
@fyshi6226Ай бұрын
That and they cant charge much lower then what Jetstar and Virgin already charge, Virgin only made enough of a profit last year to buy a single 737. The only way to make it cheaper is the stop the exorbitant tax on aviation, since over 50% of the average ticket is tax

Competition Is Good For Us Passengers
@dylanberthelsen77992 ай бұрын
Saddest part about Qantas is they’ve actually fell off. They can’t even do simple things like tell me why my frequent flyer account is locked, or even actually contact me back to discuss after the 500+ phone calls to a call centre not even here in Australia 🤷♂️ why would I trust them with my life and fly with them, not to mention the crazy high fares
@afb22 ай бұрын
I feel like many of these low cost airlines are trying and failing because for the model to work, it must be "low cost" to the airlines as much as the passengers, which is very hard to do in this climate. To have a true Qantas competitor in Australia you need to have someone come in with the level of investment seen in Air India. Even then, sourcing the planes would be very difficult to do making it even harder to compete.

@chrisweavers9032 ай бұрын
These were the guys that created the behemoth and baked in dominant advantage, by merging TAS and Qantas, then handing a virtual monopoly to Private shareholders instead of letting the country benefit - now this - look at all the subsidies Morrison gave them during Covid, while the leprechaun chose not to fly. Qatar and Emirates were the main airlines that brought regular travellers home from Europe - QF only got off their arse when the government paid

Alliance airlines could theorectically take on Qantas, virgin and jetstar on the Golden triangle routes with their Embrayer E190. Most of their E190 fly for Qantaslink and Fokker 100s for Virgin and others are used for mining charters, but Alliance could terminate some of those contracts and use their slots to launch on the golden triangle. Unlike Rex though, I wouldnt stray any further than the Golden triangle plus Gold Coast - Sydney/Melbourne routes.

Qantas monopolistic position similar to that of Air Canada?
@zorbakaput85372 ай бұрын
There is no monopoly go get the definition. A market has to have enough customers proven by the history of failed airlines in Australia and elsewhere. The two have 92% because the others don't set up properly. Why pick on Canada the other countries of our size and pop have less airlines. This is basic economics we will see if another inquiry proves anything other than there isn't enough business for four airlines on any than than 2 or 3 main routes in Australia.n

I don't know if it would be a good idea because Qantas' finances are really paying for Jetstar to stay. Much rather have a Qantas owned Jetstar than a bankrupt one. The three airlines work fine and all have their place in the quality line up and I don't give damn who's getting the revenue from it. So unpopular opinion but Qantas should keep them.
@rod4607Ай бұрын
Mono duo oligopolies in Aus are blatant. But it would be bad if Qantas had to sell Jetstar. It’s a reliable service. If someone else screws it up, I’ll be pissed
@mnewm212 ай бұрын
It would be fascinating as I would reckon Qantas would simply fold Jetstar into it's own Qantas brand rather than sell it. They may sell off the overseas units if that had to happen but why would you sell off a part of your company that is then to compete with you? The government in the end would simply cost jobs and nothing else would change except there would be less cheap airfares out there. Governments really should steer clear of this. After all they created the problem in the first place by privatising the airline. A bit like Telstra or Commonwealth Bank. Hello look at the three most profitable entities in their markets and surprisingly they all used to government owned...oops!

1. Rip off your customers by cancelling flights and then SELLING THE TICKETS and don't return the customer's money for at least 30 days (if at all) 2. Get a few billion $$$$ from the government during the pandemic but tell the government you are NEVER GOING TO PAY BACK taxpayers money. 3. Leave the company before your scheduled retirement (when things look bad) and still get 9 MILLION DOLLARS payout. 4. Sack your baggage handlers and then bring in scabs, 5. Get the pollies to deny competition by giving them (and their son) exclusive access to the executive's "SPECIAL" lounge. 6. Make record profits BUT cut 50% of your flights 7 Increase ticket prices by 40% because you know you have prevented any competition. I don't think that's * The Spirit of Australia" (unless you are someone like Alan Bond) BTW - These are facts.

Australian market is WAY too small for a third airline. End of story. This has been proven again and again and again. Bogans have to realise air travel is expensive. Politicians need to stop playing for votes. Jetstar was grown through QANTAS. Millions of QF money and resources were used. Jetstar would need to pay this back before a sale

Many people people are stuck with bloated prices in regional areas for airfares (usually one airline). Airlines provide a service for medical appointments (capital cities), visiting medical specialists, business, tourism, visiting family, and friends. Regional airfares are very expensive. Many areas, no train services, or a bus that travels an odd route that can add hours to travel !
