@@MrHav1k Good luck with that. 30 years ago you might have gotten small discounts on a few steel models, but even then it wasn't 15 or 20%. The only models you could possibly get a discount on nowadays are full gold watches sitting on shelves, but even for those Rolex typically asks ADs to send them back if they can't sell. People forget that Rolex is not a public company, they can afford to slow down production to keep their brand image and "prestige", even if it means selling less volume - they don't care that much about year-over-year figures. The Daytona has been reselling over retail for decades, don't expect that you'll ever pick it up anywhere near that anymore, especially when MSRP increases every year.

Very simple. If the gray market price is greater than MSRP, the AD will not sell it to you unless you have given him a ton of business or you're famous. Can we all stop thinking about whether or not they lose money. These should be lifetime items not bought for flipping. Wearing a Rolex used to be a sign of luxury and wealth where losing a few thousand was inconsequential. A bit like buying a Ferrari in the 70s. You’d lose your money but it showed you didn’t care and had the means to soak up the losses. A much better image than buying a watch to sit in its box, in a vault hoping to make a few grand in 10 years.

My AD is great. They've always been honest from the get go. They've always asked me what watch I want and they give me honest timescales and whether it is going to be achievable to get me what I want. They also come pretty close to their predicted wait times. They told me it would be around 1 year wait for a particular date just model and 1 year and 3 months later they rang me up. They have always said that they would rather be honest and refuse to offer me other models that I haven't asked for, or ask me to buy things I don't like just to build up a minimum spend. What they did say was that now the grey market has taken a dip, many of their buyers are now refusing to take watches which means that a lot of the waiting times are coming down which is great news for people that actually want to buy the watches to wear them.

HOWEVER the vast, vast majority of people do not get to experience that luxury - so for those of us who do not, we very much appreciate that there is an open market to buy what we want, when we want - to me (and clearly MANY others) its more than worth it to pay a few bucks over.. All in all the piece youre buying is still worth the money you paid less 10% or so, so its not really as big of a deal as it seems the whole “paying over retail thing” And just to say, I at one point had an amazing AD connection but they lost their dealership back in the very end of 2022 when Rolex started nixing dealers right and left.. and the AD I have moved onto has made me VERY HAPPY the open market exists just so I dont have to deal with their nonsense

I’ve bought 3 watches on the gray market all of which were sold as unworn but were in fact refinished. The dealers who sold them to me honestly thought they were unworn, but when I had a watch evaluation at the rolex service center, it was shown that the watches were polished. Some of these watches were a month old. Unbelievable! I need to know the origin of my watches and know they haven’t been mangled, worn, and poorly polished. This can only be done if I get them from an AD or from a friend who procured their watch from an AD!

@troisk2 ай бұрын
You're missing the point. If there was a guaranteed and transparent wait list system, with a deposit, and reasonable wait time, I'm sure a lot of people would accept to wait. The problem is there 0 guarantee you'll get what you want after waiting + the wait times are ridiculous to begin with. We're talking about waiting up to 2 years for a Steel GMT with 0 history, sometimes more in big markets. And that's assuming you have a good relation, follow up regularly, with the same person, etc. Plus MSRP will have increased by 10% in 2 years. And for models like the Steel Daytona, any honest AD will either tell you A/ Wait list is closed due to demand and minuscule supply, or, B/ You have to establish purchase history as a repeat customer to even entertain the chance of getting one down in years from now. If an AD gives you a "5 year wait time" for a Daytona, it means you'll never get it...
@craciunu2 ай бұрын
@@troisk I am not missing the point. Just saying there is no huge problem with most of the dealers - I tried quite a few, in various cities, various countries in the EU area. Sure, there is a list, sure you do not have control over the delivery time and some of the models might be out of reach completely. With Ferrari etc. is the same - you cannot buy whatever you want, whenever you want. You can always opt for a grey dealer - no problem, but only because you want it now, with the attached premium price - not because the ADs are pushing you to buy something else before, or because they are rude or anything like that. Some might, but I don't think there are many.
@troisk2 ай бұрын
@@craciunu That's why I said you were missing the point, because you're talking again about how nice ADs you met are which is irrelevant for most people. People don't buy grey because they met an unpolite AD once, they buy grey because wait times are unreasonable, inconsistent and have 0 commitment attached. So it's not paying a premium to get a watch immediately vs waiting a few months - if you want a BLNR GMT it's paying a premium to get a watch immediately vs waiting maybe 2+ years, with 0 guarantee, and 2+ years of MSRP increases. Part of the blame goes to Rolex for insisting on setting no guidelines for allocations and relations between ADs and customer (they clearly state in AD contracts that were leaked they take no responsibility in that), part of the blame goes to the vast majority of ADs who give you unreasonable wait times, or reward (even if they didn't ask), people buying more than others... So again, good for you if you have a polite and nice AD, and good for you if they're somehow announcing and meeting reasonable wait times - but this is not the norm otherwise there'd be virtually no grey market apart than for used watches.

@@vadimdon He's not giving more than retail plus sales tax, so there is no more money in flipping these, same as selling on chrono or ebay, by the time you pay fees, shipping etc, the flipping market is drying up quickly.

Buy where it's cheaper... AD when you can get it and gray when you can't and/or it's cheaper.
@Timjacks012 ай бұрын
I would say I know where I am with the AD. I know he does not value me but I know the song and dance needed and most importantly I know the price. Going grey I’m sure they appreciate me more but prices are all over the place. Given most haggle it’s hard to trust them.

I'm looking to snag an Explorer 36 and then quit the game (at least for a little while lol). When the global economy tanks, so do luxury items and what's a greater luxury good than a five (or even six) figure wristwatch?
@troisk2 ай бұрын
Luxury goods are not one size fits all when it comes to economics. There isn't a consensus on whether luxury is recession proof. Some brands/goods tank (already happening to GP and UN right now), typically the ones that were completely overblown and attracted temporary buyers. Some others still thrive. Rolex has a very unique marketing, brand image, appeal and the benefit of not being a public company. They've been at the top of the desirability pyramid for decades. They're playing the long game and don't care if they need to slow down production. That's why they only ever did small discounts decades ago, and now never do discounts anymore, while Omega and other publicly owned brands discount by 20% when they can't sell.

How is Grey market cheaper than AD? Sky dweller reference for instance. How can you sell then 30% less than the AD? OBVIOUSLY. You would be paying even less than your listing price. Likely 5% give or take. So how lol.

This is one of the best watch channels, especially if taking out the review channels. You are very straight, fair and not uncomfortable with the fact that you’re running a business. Absurd that people expect you to not to cover overhead and make money. And the sellers don’t set the prices, the buyers and overhead do. Thanks for the constant updates with prices and trends.

I’m always standing with the grey market. It’s simply the more honest buying experience. I despise any “Dance” i have to do to get a watch im willing to pay 5 Figures for. Give it to me, and give it to me raw. If retail is slightly higher but I want the watch, so be it. Waiting 5 years or buy watches I don’t want to get what I want? GFY

If you logon to Chrono24 and look at an individual watch, then scroll down you will see a graph tracking the value of that model over time. Hope that helps. Simon
