I was at my Rolex AD yesterday collecting my new Rolex GMT Batman after over a 3 year wait. The manager told me that my purchase was actually unheard of as I didn’t even have any previous spend history with them at all 😂. I mentioned the scarcity of Pepsi’s and she said they are coming through at the same ratio as Batmans.
@wristopia41012 ай бұрын
But if more people want Pepsi's (which they do, possibly because they are either sheeples or want to flip them) then it will be more scarce to a perspective purchaser. People say that Rolex artificially create scarcity, but they are the same people that think Rolex should make more of the popular models. Whilst Rolex making set numbers (as you seem to have said happens) is effectively creating scarcity of the more popular pieces, that's the fault of the people wanting them, not Rolex!
@Madeinlondon672 ай бұрын
@@wristopia4101 I agree with you 100%. I was told by someone that Rolex may have made the Pepsi scarce due to the new models coming out around that time like the Left hand drive Sprite and the Bruce Wayne .

I find it so interesting that the explorer almost never gets mentioned here.. I think it’s because the person that buys this wants to keep it and it’s someone that really appreciates what Rolex’s are about. Interesting to understand what your trends for that watch model usually are..
@MrHav1k2 ай бұрын
Yep! Exactly. As much as I love LWC they're secondary sellers, meaning by definition unless someone is trading in for something else, they're not going to see non hype models like that because the people who buy Explorers tend to buy and keep. I think it's quite interesting how the models that "dry up" were the ones that never went super duper crazy over retail on the grey anyway. AKA f it's not a hype model, there likely won't be someone buying it from an AD to sell to them straight away. Flipper market drying up before our eyes.
@TradeMarcmultimedia2 ай бұрын
Definitely on point with this take.. and you know most of the time I do see them for sale, the listing says something to the effect of “I bought the 40 and should have gotten the 36 or vice versa”. Personally I bought my Explorer after a GMT .. which is to say it wasn’t a “purchase history” buy.. but rather a coming to the realisation that the Explorer is just as legendary as people said it was

Compared to a few years ago when my ‘Hulk’ and ‘Pepsi’ both went for £7K over purchase price, the market is terrible at the moment. Last week I sold my two Bi-Metal Rolex to a dealer and took a loss on both! First was a DJ36, fluted, white gold, mint green dial on a Jubilee (£250 loss on £7500 buy). Second was GMTII ‘Zombie’ (£850 loss on £13,850 buy). Money is better off earning interest in an ISA nowadays. That said, I’m now on my AD’s NOI for an OP Celebration 🥳

As always, a really useful and insightful video. Thanks Charlie! Reading thru the comments and reflecting on todays market I can see Rolex watches falling into 3 categories. Watches which can be purchased in the secondary market significantly under list, models which can become available with a modest wait from an AD and the grail watches which are rarely available to the public and have a significant premium. Thanks to your video's we know where each watch is likely to fall. Under list and grail watches simply go to the grey. If there is a modest wait (or no wait) simply go to the AD and try your luck. If you get impatient then simply go to the grey.

Charlie I don’t think the normal run of the mill person looking to get that dream watch for a retirement or other special occasion would even bother with an AD now due to the way they’ve operated over the last 6/7 years. They are left calling up the clients who’ve a buying history trying to offload different pieces. The issue they’ve got is their clients as I know many personally now know there isn’t any money in those pieces unless it’s the ones you’ve discussed so they say your alright I’ll give it a swerve. It’s a shame but feeds the grey as businesses like yourself can then negotiate taking those DJ they can’t shift off the AD’s for some of the more hard to get pieces. Sad that the tail is now wagging the dog!! No one wants to buy three Mont Blanc pens or a diamond for the Mrs when you just want a steel sub or a Pepsi 😂😂

The reason why people are going with GMT Bruce Wayne on oyster is because it got 40mm maxi-case style with 3235 caliber, by which the new submariner is in 41mm new case size. There are people seeking the maxi-case but wanting the new caliber. GMT Bruce Wayne on oyster has become a better choice over 41mm submariner.

Slow down! These watches have already been produced and are still being produced right now in very large quantities. The specific question is: why can't we buy these watches in a boutique at the recommended price without unreasonable expectation, but there are a lot of them in the condition of new ones on the secondary market from organized groups of sellers? What is the specific and clear reason? Watches are designed, manufactured, and marketed. And what exactly do the gray dealers produce? What do they want money for? What is the added value? If there is a product and there is a lot of it, but we cannot buy it at the recommended retail price, then it is someone's fault, and this fault is not ours. It's not fair somehow. Dear author! Why dealers don't have watches available? Because in some obscure way you are buying and reselling to us with a margin for it is not clear why. I repeat: what is the added value asking for? If, because of the activity of gray dealers, it acquires such a scale that it begins to greatly distort the original market, makes it impossible to purchase already manufactured goods at the stated recommended retail price - this must be illegal. Health!

The reason the grey market exists is simple, there is a demand and people are often willing to pay a premium to get something. There are also people willing to buy a watch from an AD and take it direct to a grey market trader or resell it themselves to make a quick profit. There is no law against this, nor should there be, as once you buy anything it is YOUR property and nobody has the right to dictate that you can't sell it or dictate a price you should be allowed to sell it for, because every buyer has the right to say no to the price and walk away. Also ADs sometimes sell a desirable model that is in high demand direct to grey market dealers through the back door, or to a 'lucky' customer who could be a friend/relative/associate of a grey market trader. Although Rolex may not officially 'approve' of this, the fact that grey market can sell at higher than list helps their image of desirability as it seems buying at list price is great value and people will be more willing to join a list, possibly buy something else in store or buy another model under the assumption that paying list price for any Rolex product is a great deal. If you believe it is immoral or reasonable has no relevance as it isn't illegal, the only question is how how much are you willing to pay. If you are willing to pay a premium price you'll probably get one relatively easily, if not expect a long wait. It is smple really - list prices are meaningless once an item has been sold. Just decide how much an item is worth to you and only buy if it is something you really want and you feel the price is right, You can't insist that someone sells to you at a price you dictate just as the seller can't insist you buy an item, you both have the right to refuse In my case the few watches I would buy and wear aren't in high demand or currently fashionable so are easy to buy at list, or occasionally less so I absolutely know they are not investments and will lose value. I don't care about it losing value over time, but the only questions I ask myself are the same - do I want it and am I willing to pay the price.

@@philjones352 An entire category of mass-produced goods is being withdrawn from the primary retail market in order to generate prices that are very different from those that the manufacturer publicly declares. the people who do this have a cartel agreement. The ordinary consumer is in unequal conditions with the gray dealers to whom the watches are initially sold. A "consumer" is a subject of law. All consumers have equal rights. But we are seeing a segmentation of consumers into those who have the right to buy watches directly from a boutique and those who cannot. It is illegal and immoral

@@bgpsbgps1 Your rights as a consumer aren't being abused, nor are you being denied the right to buy as a waiting list means there aren't any in stock at that time to sell to you - but as ALL privately owned businesses have the right to refuse service you don't cannot claim an absolute right to buy anything or even enter their premises if you are instructed to leave. Your consumer rights don't trump a private business owner's rights. Flippers who walk out of an AD and hand their watch to a grey market trader AREN'T breaking any laws, Nor are the grey market traders. You may not like the current situation, but no laws are being broken by selling on a secondary market at a profit as all businesses must make a profit to exist. The only law that dictates pricing is the law of supply and demand. YOU can't claim consumer protection rights or quote specific laws because they aren't applicable - if you haven't bought something you aren't a consumer. If you do buy via the Grey market for more than retail then you agreed to the price. As long as the item you bought was accurately described the transaction is completely legal Most secondary market traders are registered businesses that have the same legal obligations as any other business. They have been around for years - if they were breaking any laws they would have been shut down years ago.

It is not true. A public retail entity sells goods on a strictly priority basis to persons who use the purchased goods for subsequent resale for personal enrichment; at the same time, consumers wishing to purchase goods for personal use are placed in the position of "secondary". Once again, the retailer actually conducts b2b activities, which has become its main source of income. This is illegal, belittles consumers, creates additional costs and worries for them, distorts state economic statistics
