Tanin Market! I used to stay very near there. Fantastic place! And you are right to go with a Thai person. I would wander through there without a clue what I was looking at. Then I went with a couple Thai friends which completely changed everything. After that I shopped there a lot.

Chef-y food so i suppose some of those dishes the ordinary Thai won't commonly have either (particularly the raw and fermented stuff)

Hi Elf, Actually laab (raw water buffalo salad) and the fermented pork is very common in the north of Thailand and sold at numerous establishments. However, how many Thai's actually eat the raw version of laab I am not sure. I would assume, especially with the younger generation, that they probably gravitate towards the cooked version.
