Potato farmer in Maine here, I enjoy your videos, not going to lie, watching you guys run over the cord and pull the end out made my day, I do that more then I’d like to admit on my spudnik bin piler . My wife started a channel here too if you want to see how is small guys (160 acres potatoes) do things over in Maine ,BellsFarming is the channel. Keep up the good work guys

Great video! Would definitely love to see more of this kind of stuff :D Even the boring old shots of just the equipment working and having someone with the camera going up and down the line looking at things can be fascinating to watch. Minus the loud squeaking, the sound of all that equipment running can also be pretty soothing. I'm an oddball who likes seeing everything going on and would love to just have like a 12 hour video of unloading. It doesn't all need to be exciting things like the battery pack falling off of a drill or watching someone rewire a cable end.

Lot of work to store so much potatos, can you sell it too directly from the field? Thanks for upload your farmlife brings so much info about your work.
@RockyMountainFarmer Жыл бұрын
We can sell it straight from the field but the problem is that everyone is harvesting now so the plant is bogged down with the potato supply. We store ours so the plant has potatoes to run on for the next few months.

I really enjoyed this video.Seeing all the different elements that had to mesh together to get it done was fabulous. Looking forward to other videos here. I assume that is 110# sacks so over 55,000 pounds of potatoes. That certainly is a bumper crop..

I’m glad you like the video. I was kind of worried when I uploaded such a long video that nobody would want to watch it. Everything does have to work just right in order for things to run smoothly so we go off of 100 pound sack so we are getting Around 55,000 pounds of potatoes per acre.

We had a piler, and a scraper tractor and the truck unloaded straight into the piler,, moves were easier. But I'm almost as old as your Grandpa.

Very interesting video. We had a few spud growers around here for 30 yrs, but I never saw them setting up that long train of equipment and running. There was a Fritio Lay plant in Lubbock,TX they delivered to. Then they began having them deliver to Dallas and other places. I assume the plant in Lubbock went to producing corn chips back in the late 1970s and 80s when Frito corn chips dominated the market before there was so much variety in snack chips. After Frito Lay quit contracting spuds they contracted a lot of food corn in this area, but gradually they began eliminating growers and were only dealing with one or two big growers for a few years. The bulk of our local corn was produced for the beef industry. Curious what percentage of shrink y'all lose during storage? Will those stored taters be gone by next spring? Congratulations on your bumper crop. We need a couple of those every decade to maintain a good attitude. We're seeing a lot of young farmers who got pretty optomistic and bought land at high prices from retiring Boomers get their first real kick in the gut. It's painful to watch when you've been through a few "resets" yourself.
@RockyMountainFarmer Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. We might lose 3 to 5% shrink but it’s not much because they usually take them out pretty quickly. They will probably all be out by march. Farming is certainly hard. Glad you enjoyed the video

We have in the past. Last year we had 4 different varieties. But this year they are all russet rangers. The plant likes them for what they are doing.

"550 sacks per acre" For those of us who don't know, how many spuds per sack?
@RockyMountainFarmer Жыл бұрын
Each sack is 100 pounds so 550 sacks would be 55,000 pounds
@piippeeter Жыл бұрын
For the europeans and metric people, I will save you the conversion. That is 24900kg per acre and 61-62t per hectare. And indeed it is impressive. I was happy with the 30t per hectare yield.

Contracted as in going to be made french fries?
@RockyMountainFarmer Жыл бұрын
We make sure that when we grow potatoes that all of them are contracted there is an open market, but it usually isn’t that great some years it’ll be really good and other years it won’t be good at all, so we only grow contracted potatoes.

Hey do me a favor when moving equipment only ONE guy give directions of up ,down left, right etc
@RockyMountainFarmer Жыл бұрын
We do most of the time. But in some cases we take the referee approach. People placed all around what’s going on with different angles to see everything and when someone sees something wrong anyone can give the direction to stop or move. Because one person cannot see everything.
